I'm a PC gamer, I own consoles, I have fun with both. Would I like more frames for consoles? Hell yeah. Does it stop me from playing console games and put everyone else down? No. If FPS and graphics was everything, I would not pull out my NES (and pretty much every other console) once in a while and have hours of fun. It's great to push for more refresh rates, I just wish "those guys" (you guys know who I mean), didn't look down on everyone and shit on consoles. I love the ability to plug in two cords, shove a disk in, and play. That is what a console is good at. I don't have to update security, graphics drivers, error reports, compatibility problems, water cooling leaks etc... There is a reason why consoles are great. PC is my favorite, but not everyone has the know how or time to put a good rig together or how to keep a machine running smooth. Peace
@P5BDeluxeWiFi9 жыл бұрын
NES does 60fps in most games so your NES point is moot.

This Name Was Available! It's not just NES though. I play ALL consoles AND PC. Also those older games are not fancy at all and are still playable. We are sooo focused on graphics today.

I think we always have been, no more than in the 80's and 90's, Obviously there are exceptions (like Tetris or something) but graphics sell games and systems.
@evilparadigm9 жыл бұрын
This Name Was Available! I tend to disagree. Most indie games don't go for fancy graphics. They focus on unique gameplay, great story, art style, you name it. Many of my favorite games are indie games. Today people focus too much on "realistic" graphics, instead of story or an art style other than ultra realistic.
@evilparadigm9 жыл бұрын
***** I think you misunderstood my original comment. I was saying that indie developers often take on a unique style of graphics other than the "realistic" route. Bastion is one of my favorite games. The other guy was arguing that "graphics sell games." I said I disagree. I understand the "epic" FPS market completely. I understand why and how it has taken the life out of innovative gaming for large developers. That was my point.

A fun explanation and good point about personal subjectivity. Years ago I had a CRT monitor at work and thought nothing of refresh rates; but one time when an IT guy came by my desk, he winced in pain when looking at the screen. After showing me it was only at 30 hz, and how much better it was when set at 80 hz, I was really impressed by the change. Ever since I've been careful to check the refresh rate on all monitors and have noticed a big improvement in video games I can run at high fps.

I was a console gamer for many years growing up. I was used to not having options and with the 360 almost all games came in 30fps. I didn't complain because I never got to experience it at 60hz until I built my pc and had a 1080p monitor to play it with. True 1080 looked much better and felt very smooth in 60hz, same game, same engine. Then I got a 144hz monitor. Same game, same engine, but now I literally can not pick out a frame. I'm certain that if I actually turned motion blur on, it would feel like a higher hz rate but only just. After a few weeks with 144hz, I went back to 60 just to try it and it felt like 30hz back when I was used to 60hz. However, I can confirm that is not a bad thing. I had a friend who, at this point in time, just got the PS4. I had him do a blind test going between 30 to 60. Then from 60 to 90 to 120 to 144. He was able to clearly identify from 30 and 60 with zero mistakes. the 60, 90, 120, 144 test he only made a mistake with 120 saying it was 144. The rest was all on the spot. So do not say you can't tell the difference. As a matter of fact, math says that if our brains can process our fastest measuring rate (the millisecond, or ms) of 1ms, then we should be able to see a difference between 144hz and 480hz. However, this is no monitor that is 480hz for someone to test this theory. I do believe though that 144hz is a good refresh rate as it is very hard to render past this with good image quality. Right now, the most I can get on a game in 4K resolution is 78fps average in CS:GO on my GTX970 with Core i7-4770k (not sure the Ghz anymore, I need to check my bios settings). 60fps is playable for me but I really struggle to play more than 20 minutes at 30fps. So in conclusion, 60hz is minimal, 120-144hz is optimal, 480hz+ is tits P.S. They ruined battlefield!
@AndyGilleand10 жыл бұрын
As for the eyes, no they don't see in frames per second. They see a continuous stream of picture, but they also work similarly to a camera's shutter in that at any given moment, the image on the retina will contain visual information from the last several milliseconds. For most people this will be longer than 16ms, meaning frame rates higher than 60fps will offer no improved motion information for most human eyes, given that they have proper motion blur. If motion blur is disabled, then the human eye will see improvements potentially up to several thousand fps, but that's just because the eye is simulating that motion blur itself.

Higher is definitely better, and this is a severe drawback and disadvantage with current consoles. I am curious as to what the "upper limit" is in gaming applications though. I can't bare less than 60fps now that I'm used to it, and 120fps is glorious with a matching 120Hz monitor (wish I owned that kind of setup myself). But I know that 144Hz is popular too. So.. how much further can it go?
@ThomasTheFapEngine10 жыл бұрын
Military grade monitors far exceed the 144Hz barrier. Not sure by how much though.
@TheOfficialEdge10 жыл бұрын
That's interesting, do you know what they use the additional frames for? I can't think of much that would require a display to update more than 144 times a second xD

I'm pretty much used to a 60hz monitor so I probably wouldn't be able to notice the difference of a 144Hz+ one. Or it would just give me a splitting headache ;) As for why they'd need the faster display time/extra frames, I wouldn't have a clue. But, it's the military, they obviously made them for a reason.

Alex Mackay The PC and Console war I can understand in a sense, it's just annoying. While PCs are able to render games better, games that require intense button usage are on Consoles for a reason. While I know there are PC Game Controllers, you have to buy them separately. I even admit there's a few accessories I'd like to have like CH Products Multi-Function Panel and an additional 25 Buttons for it. Said panel works great for games and other programs like Photoshop.
@ArtisticKamenRider10 жыл бұрын
Alex Mackay PCs have to be more powerful, seeing they are used for Video Games, Video Editing/Recording, CGI Animations(2D or 3D), Digital Painting, Writing, Music and Audio, Internet capability, and many other things. In some cases they have to work multiple programs at once. It's why Consoles are useful because they mostly focus more on games. Heck, I play both PC and Console Games, so I kind of stay out of this war.

Yes, I hate it so much when people claim that the human eye can't notice anything higher than 30 fps or 60 fps. I personally own an Asus 120 hz monitor and there is a massive difference between 60 hz and 120 hz. Just moving windows around feels more responsive and smoother with a 120 hz monitor. There's also a very noticeable difference in games.
@jagzzlp10 жыл бұрын
I've played on a 120Hz monitor maybe only twice, but not too long ago i saw a 120Hz monitor by a identical one at 60Hz both showing a moving picture, and the difference in the clarity of moving things was absolutely mind blowing. In the picture was some dude, and on the 120Hz monitor his face was completely clear as i followed it with my eyes. At 60 there's much much more blur and stuff like that.

It's quite a misconception to think that 24FPS is the _maximum_ that the human eye/brain can distinguish because that's the standard movie framerate. 24FPS is not a maximum anything. It's a _minimum_. More precisely, it's a minimum framerate that, for a film, is not annoying. In other words, it's right in the lower limit of where the brain "fills the gaps" and gives (barely) the illusion of smooth movement. (Even then it requires for the film to have motion blur, which standard film naturally has.) This minimum does not mean that the human brain cannot distinguish higher framerates from 24FPS. Of course it can, and it can do so quite easily. The reason why they originally chose this minimum is because film was very expensive, so they wanted to get the minimum framerate they could use so that they could fit as much movie per feet of film they could. (If the cost of film had been a non-issue, we would probably have much higher frame rates in movies today.)

I was running CS:GO on my laptop with a crappy Geforce 710M capped at 60fps because that is my monitor refresh rate, and it was dipping as low as 30 fps in crowded situations. However I did lower the graphics settings to 800x600 on 3:4 and removed the cap to check things out, and running at 80-120 fps has greatly improved my gameplay even though the monitor is 60Hz only, and this is due to FRAME LATENCY. If my monitor can only display 1 frame per sec, it is better off having to choose between several frames picking up the latest, rather than having to (in some cases) wait for a frame to be generated by the GPU as it is only providing 60 frames as well when capped. Game runs smoother, does not stutter and aiming becomes a bit easier when always staying at that 80+ fps rate.
@bobbyhalick10 жыл бұрын
EDIT: Thanks for all the helpful comments! I'm a film/tv junkie, and am very particular about how my shows and movies look. I love higher FPS and refresh rate for games, but every 120hz television I've seen has made me want to vomit. But maybe all those televisions were running motion flow or something? Adding in extra frames instead of just refreshing the same frame 4 times in a row? I'm afraid that if I get a 120hz monitor all the movies I watch on it are going to look like garbage...
@lamexeno504010 жыл бұрын
not quite how it works friend. otherwise, people with 60Hz monitors (most people) wouldn't be able to manage either. Having a higher refresh rate display will not affect lower fps content such as 24fps movies.
@WacoedeUnplugged10 жыл бұрын
Yes I know what you mean and yes it usually is the interpolating of the TV's that are vomit inducing if you still have one of those 120Hz TV's around try going in to the setup menu and turning it off Different companies call it different things so I can't help you there I did this on my TV and it improved how watch-able the TV was for me, also don't worry about monitors they normally don't come with the interpolate features of TV's plus if you have a good GFX card it will output 120FPS and so will sync up with the monitor
@stickyhairlesscats10 жыл бұрын
There's usually a setting on the tv where you can turn that sort of "frame filling" off.
@MultiGotch10 жыл бұрын
Im guessing you are talking about the soap opera effects when a 120hz or 240hz TV uses motion interpolation. Well, yes it makes movies look unrealistically smooth (I personally like it for some movies. ie action) but these TVs should also have the ability to turn it off. Picking a TV with higher refresh rate is better as it will result in less jitter and better motion resolution.
@QuakerAssassin10 жыл бұрын
I've got 2 monitors at 120hz and 2 at 60hz unless the content is actually exceeding 60 there is no difference between the two. You were probably looking at a motionflow TV. I had to disable it on mine because it made all the movies look like cheap digital video.

+OVO MobZai lol u know what I mean I'm talking about will it b good for gaming?
@BO2GAMEPL4Y8 жыл бұрын
Dominick Buffaline Lol, I know. I was being sarcastic. Simply put, your GPU produces frames per second (FPS). Your monitor then in turn displays those FPS. If you monitor can only display 32Hz of data (or 32FPS, even though they're not the same thing) that means that no matter how many FPS your GPU can spit out, you will only physically and technologically possibly only see 32 of those images per second. It is completely impossible to see past your refresh rate. HOWEVER, you can FEEL difference. So for example, if you have a 60Hz display, and your GPU spits of let's say 144FPS, you can only SEE 60FPS, but it will be "smoother", not because your EYE is physically seeing the picture more smoothly or your monitor physically outputting more than 60 FPS (because it can't), it's because there's less input lag. This is noticeable when you move up to 144Hz or 120Hz monitors and pull frames of 200+, it's buttery smooth. By the way, you'd be an idiot if you use a Titan on a 32Hz display. That's like buying a ferrari and keeping it in your garage forever, without using it.
@dominickbuffaline93378 жыл бұрын

@JonathanWeberese8 жыл бұрын
Another thing to consider is streaking/tracers. Your eyes always have a bit of latency behind them, where an image will stick around depending on the brightness and duration. In real life, this is the cause for motion blur. On games without motion blur, you can see the separation of the images. If a lightsaber was to whiz across the screen, you would see multiple lightsabers. It doesn't matter if the frame rate is really high, this pattern occurs in objects moving with sufficient speed. In real life, this does not happen. Instead, the lightsaber would be brightest in its current location, and simply have a streak behind it. This is what motion blur tries to correct. The higher the refresh rate, the less motion blur you need to alleviate this effect. I would say that by the time you are getting 120FPS with proper, full frame-to-frame blurring, you won't be able to discern much more, at least at common monitor brightnesses. In many cases, 60 already gets you there, but current motion blur techniques aren't quite there, so you get other weird effects like your gun blurring or even the HUD blurring. With actual film, 48FPS was very nearly there already. I could only imagine 60FPS movies.

So if i want to play at 120 fps, and i have a 60hz monitor, i'll be seeing 60 fps and not the actual 120 fps?
@RichardSoloman9 жыл бұрын
Meh. I guess technically after 60fps you won't notice a difference. If FRAPS tells you 120fps, then your system is throwing 120 frames at your monitor per second and it's trying to cram that into just 60 frames, which could cause visual tearing. I typically don't notice the tearing on the games i play so I just leave V-Sync off
@Tanilazation9 жыл бұрын
If you have a 60hz monitor you should probably just cap it at 60 to try to alleviate tearing
@Primimimimimimimi9 жыл бұрын
I'm willing to buy a gtx 770 and it will hit 60+ fps on games, with that in mind, i should get a 120hz monitor?
@marioysikax9 жыл бұрын
Richard Soloman You wouldn't and you shouldn't notice difference - if you have regular 60Hz monitor. You have to buy monitor that supports 120Hz to see those 120 FPS. However as someone who owns 144Hz monitor I can say that there are much more things that are better than just that smoothness when getting over 100 FPS in game. Yaranaika Hatsune Yes. Actually if nothing is bottlecapping the system GTX 770 should be enough to get greatly over 60 FPS in almost every game to this day. Tanilazation Not cap, Vsync. Those are two differend things even if they seem like at first sight. With capping frames are limited to certain amount but there are still possibility for tearing. With Vsync frames are then synced to refresh rate which does cap the frame rate but also syncs them so there's zero tearing.
@TheKapzor9 жыл бұрын
Once you go to a 120hz from 60hz you WILL feel a difference. Also once you go 120hz you never go back to 60hz, in fact you might even start saying 60hz screens lag because you are used to play on a 120hz. I would definitely recommend a 120hz monitor. I play a lot of cs:go and once I went from 60hz to 120hz... Best feeling ever

YayItsScarlett You say not really but it would apply to games, film and cartoons (Particularly disney features animated on 1's) ect, why? because they're all moving images at the end of the day, the only effect with games would be because of the interactivity, if it doesn't look fluid to you either it's because of frame drops or your nitpicks, I often go between 30/60 and some games on my PC 90/100, there's a difference but it's heavily exaggerated by (PC only) gamers
@sectorcodec10 жыл бұрын
***** No, there's a difference. Motion blur is a natural effect in how cameras capture light, it's not natural to games and makes it look choppy. Plenty of gamers, myself included, can easily tell the difference between 30 and 60 fps, and 60 and 120fps.

Hz and FPS directly correlate. If your PC runs Counter Strike at exactly 144fps, and you run it on a 144Hz monitor, you'll see 144fps. But, your PC can't display more than your monitor can, so if you run said game at 200fps on a 144Hz monitor, you'll still only see 144Hz.

Thanks for explaining about motion blur. I've heard how people scream for more and more fps in games while that won't help to achieve "cinematic feel" because only 24 fps with natural motion blur is what makes cinematic videos to look like they do. But I'm afraid that video adapters aren't yet ready for that cinematic looking blur. If they were, 24 fps would be enough for almost every game. Here is a great photography article explaining how our brains are used to certain fps for movies, TV news etc. and how we feel uncomfortable if our expectations aren't met: photography.tutsplus.com/articles/quick-tip-how-does-shutter-speed-affect-video--photo-12092

This was great, only thing id add is that even on a 60Hz display more frames per second is still better. The difference in responsiveness between 60FPS and 120 is staggering. Even the difference between 120-200 is noticeable in many games.
@RWoody199510 жыл бұрын
that tends to be what happens with badly optimised games though, some games get input lag at 60fps and thats why running 100fps on a 60hz screen can seem smoother in some games. for example i play the game project cars a lot and it hovers 30-40fps and its perfectly smooth whereas GTA IV looks like crap even at 40-60fps lol

megaspeed2v2 I wouldn't argue that some games handle lower frame rates better. However I play mostly FPS games and honestly 60 does not feel playable in anything. Crysis 3 is a perfect example of this. It looks amazing on Ultra, 1080p (I have GTX 780 Ti, however I never play like that because playing at or below 60FPS is just horrible, and id say that's one title actually made for PC hardware. Anything less than 120 I find I'm constantly waiting for my inputs to affect the game. EDIT: Maybe I'm just a PC gaming purist but that's my take.

Lonewolf On a 60Hz monitor? If it's true that you can tell the difference between 60 and 120 on a monitor that only shows 60 per second, I really can't understand why :D (other than what megaspeed2v2 said, but if you say it happens on every game it is very weird)
@johngorby760310 жыл бұрын
Lonewolf the issue you're running into is frame time variance. You're getting a different amount of time between frames because some frames are tougher to render. This explains why when you're getting above displayable frame rates you have a smoother experience. Because the difference between frames is closer to being the exact same every time because as a whole the frames are easier to render. Vsync would fix this issue in the sense that all frames would have the same amount of time between them and your input lag would be consistent. The only problem is you'll get even more input lag so it actually sucks more. Gsync and Adaptive Sync (display port) will fix this without forcing adding to your input lag.

DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE... MAKE ONE OF THIS BUT ABOUT DEFRAGMENTATION.... you would not believe the number of people that dont know why they have to do it
@MarioDragon10 жыл бұрын
"having" to do it is a little extreme. I haven't noticed much of a performance difference between my defragged and fragmented hard drives, and with SSDs becoming so popular defragging won't be necessary soon.
@samin9010 жыл бұрын
MarioDragon I seriously hope people don't try defragging an SSD.

lets just pretend for one second that not all people use ssd as their hard drive and repeat my same question

To the two who told me not to defrag an SSD, please read one of the last lines I said. "with SSDs becoming so popular defragging won't be necessary soon."

I actually found a neat example to demonstrate this to a friend of mine who believed the idea that you couldn't visually see the difference in FPS. Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 for The Nintendo Switch runs at about 30 for normal gameplay, but in 1 v 1 battles, it goes up to 60fps for fairness!

So if I have a 60hz refresh rate monitor and in game the fps drops to 50, would i notice it?
@Gaminglevel29 жыл бұрын
not as much as you would if it dropped to something like 30, but if you are used to 60 you might notice (I myself know there's a diference but can't percieve it very well)
@zyad489 жыл бұрын
***** well that really depends, if vsync is on it shouldnt be too much of a bother but if you keep vsync off(cuz srsly who has it on?) then it would cause some screen tearing, there are ppl who can tell the difference between 50 and 60 fps but im not among those ppl, but I can tell something is 30 fps easily without a framerate counter
@Gaminglevel29 жыл бұрын
Zyad48 - The Warrior of Evil I do, adaptive Vsync... keps at 60 and if it lower than 60 it turns off(then back on when over). Really useful for someone with a 60Hz monitor playing FP games.
@zyad489 жыл бұрын
Th3Haxor well other than adaptive v-sync i mean, i meant the original non-adaptive vsync which as well all know, sucks ass, input lag and worse performance, but adaptive v-sync works much better
@KingBlueSlimss9 жыл бұрын
Zyad48 - The Warrior of Evil Adaptive and regular Vsync has the same amount of input lag so to call one better than the other is dumb. It's all down to personal preference

Well actually our eyes have a constant limit... the speed of light. We can't update more images beyond light speed. That's for displays AND the real world But somehow... the real world looks really laggy to me... unlike a screen
