10 years ago all of the Monkees were still alive. Today there is only one left. Life comes and goes fast and death is always waiting. Seize the day. Be not afraid.

Wow. I was in 7th grade, and a huge Monkee fan. I don't think I've ever seen this. At 11 or 12, I was not very interested in awards shows. 😊 RIP, Mike Nesmith. You had a great gift. Say hi to Peter and Davy. ❤

I loved the Monkees. Had all rheir albums. I can still sing their songs by heart. So sad what happened to the girl who played Buffy.. damn drugs.

They were working their butts off, filming the TV series, going out and playing live, and trying to start playing in the studio as well. This was probably way down on their list.

The Monkees did deserve this as at the time they were something new and very funny. It was and still is one of the funniest. Innovative for the time. The show was a precursor to the pop videos of today. All those shows mentioned were great but the Monkees were something different and deserve their place in tv and music history. This was a great video to see and thank you for posting it!

james fitzgerald Hard Days Night was one movie. The Monkees filmed 56 episodes. That's a ton of work and worthy of acknowledgement.

Anissa Jones was probably one of the most talented actresses of all time. Her ability to memorize her lines, her expressive talents, her comedic timing were unprecedented for one so young! It infuriates me to know we lost such talent, grace, and beauty to drugs at such a young age. The anger in me wants to blame her parents for allowing her accessibility to the drug scene at such an early and innocent age. Brian Keith was like a second father to her, and he tried so hard to keep Anissa employed and off drugs, but alas, the drugs won. God have mercy on her soul.

@Steve Gioe Most things were better back then, with the exceptions of the Vietnam War, inner city riots and assassinations of key political and religious figures. But on a day-to-day basis, life was generally simpler, more caring and less demanding. You could still support a family on one income. Certainly entertainment - in music, movies and TV - was far better.

I remember the first time I was looking through a list of Outstanding Comedy Series winners and was shocked to see The Monkees won one year. Looking back on it and looking at the other nominees, The Monkees must have been a very refreshing show introducing a lot of things we now all take for granted in comedy series, especially ones geared towards preteens and teenagers with the use of music video style editing, things like though bubbles, and montages. It was also really ramped up on the comedy (inspired by the Marx Bros) being lead by four very charismatic fresh faces full of personalities. Mike Nesmith looked really hip in that suit and sunglasses and haircut compared to the majority of that room.

I was ten years old and a yuuuge Monkees fan in 1967! Ten years later I was a wake and bake wastrel hanging around CBGBs watching the Ramones. Heh. I still love them both (the Monkees and the Ramones, not the wake and bake part). ;^)

geor67 i’ve seen this a few times before and never knew who she was before. shocked to learn she died at 18! and the coroner described it as the “most severe drug overdose he had ever seen”, reading about how she was treated in the industry was horrible, poor girl

Strange that I am familiar with all the shows mentioned from 1967.. yet on the current Grammys, I haven't heard of ANY of the shows! (Andy Griffith Show, The Lucy Show, Hogan's Heroes, Monkees, Bewitched, Get Smart, I Spy, Family Affair)

@@johnroy9654 Well I AM pretty old but your'e right in that they had quality programs back then. Today too much reality TV, they don't put much thought into the shows like in the '60s. The sitcoms these days are pure drivel. I was 12 in 1967 and the music also was awesome. At least I can listen to The Moody Blues on KZfaq....

All of those shows from back then are classics now. I don't see hardly anything in the last 30 or 40 years of tv coming close to those shows in quality, believable or talent.

But recalling that era -- and my grandparents, born in the late 1800s, as was Durante -- adults didn't age nearly as well, nor did they have access to the medications and/or surgical procedures that, so far, for me anyway, help create an illusion of youth if not the reality thereof. I'm fine, so long as I don't have to rattle off the band members of The Monkees, or The Turtles, or The Zombies, or... well, you get the idea.

+Scott Evans I Googled Durante, and was surprised to learn he lived until 1980! I almost get the feeling now that he was hamming it up somewhat, and or was having problems seeing clearly. The story of Anissa Jones is sad. At 18, she came into quite a large sum of money. About one million dollars by todays standards. Not long after, she died of a massive overdose of drugs. He brother went the same route, several years later....

+mrsteve hartman Hollywood is a difficult town no matter what your age, but particularly difficult for children and adolescents who, upon reaching young adulthood, find themselves no longer in demand, and this solely upon their appearance or voice changing. Paul Petersen, a child star that appeared on The Donna Reed Show from the late '50s early '60s era, did much in the way of creating an organization to help young performers to either transition, if possible -- and if not, at least give them a fighting chance to assimilate back to a reality that had been withheld from them. Also, coinciding with this, was legislative change which required parents and/or guardians of young performers to report (to the last dime) any and all income received, which was placed into trust funds until they reached adult age. Back in the 1930s when 'Our Gang' comedy shorts rolled out of Roach studios, that was not the case. Kids were worked nearly to death (with long hours, that is), and upon arising were given 'uppers' for that day's work. By the end of a short-lived career -- end of the day, so to speak -- there was not very much if anything to show for it. Residual payments for recurring broadcasts (on TV), did not factor into the life of an entertainer until... I believe 1962 or thereabouts. We thank Dick Van Dyke for that. Cheers! Enjoy the weekend. BTW, you're so right about Anissa Jones. She was/and still is somewhere, loved and very precious.

+Scott Evans Yes, a lot of childhood actors were ripped off financially. But, from what I've read, Anissa was not one of them. She was handed a substantial sum of money upon turning 18. Perhaps... she was already deeply into drugs by that time. All I know is that it seems like she was one of the " lucky ones ", who actually did receive money from her childhood acting career. More the pity....

Hi Tracy, Screen Gems hired Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart to write n record the first album. Of which My X husband BILL LEWIS recorded the drum tracks on the entire album. Along with LOUIE SHELTON on guitar, John Galley, Tommy n Bobby did vocals. This happened 6 months before anyone had been picked to play the 4 leads. Tommy tried out for one of the leads but wasn't picked. Screen Gems were pretty sure about Davey because of his British accent. And if you listen to an ORIGINAL album , not a remake or enhanced one. You won't hear a british accent. Tommy and Bobby formed their own band called BOYCE N HART FAMILY. In which My x husband BILL LEWIS played drums. Bill also did a lot of studio work too. So back then along with all studio musicians. You've heard them a l,000 times but you don't know who they are. Which has been a practice for many many years. Only one of the 4 leads actually PLAYED a musical instrument. But wasn't "good" enough to use in the studio. That's why there are sooo many studio musicians who played on the monkey albums. I think it's an insult to ALL the real talent that did record the albums. When the 4 ACTORS on the tv series were inducted into the HALL OF FAME. Did you notice the one that refused the honor was the only one who actually played a musical instrument. And yes, later on after the show was dropped the 4 actors, different ones at various times did Knox Berry Farms, night clubs. But did not do big concerts. Boyce even played with them on "tour". For a while. If Tommy or Bobby are still alive. The truth would be known. Bill Lewis passed away 11 years ago. So you can't ask him. Oh yeah, If you can still get a BOYCE N HART FAMILY album. Listen to it then listen to a monkey album if you can still get one. That's all the proof anyone needs.

It's seems unfair The Monkees themselves weren't onstage too. These days such awards often feature the majority of the cast of winning shows. I also had a screenwriting teacher who used to work for Burt Schneider. Let's just say he didn't have anything nice to say about him personally. He told us he was unpleasant to work with; it made me wonder if it wasn't a coincidence the dummy in The Monkees TV show was called, "Mr. Schneider" or could only talk when his string was pulled.

I met Davy Jones at the Summit stadium after the 2nd period in a Houston Aeros hockey game. He played during the breaks. I got to talk with him a bit. Such a nice guy and very friendly. I saw Mickey at the Cynthia Woods pavilion north of Houston about 2009. He put on a great show about 1997. I’m glad I got to see at least two of the monkeys. They were so great!

Same! They had some of the best studio musicians money could buy playing on their first few albums, hard to copy some of their licks (thinking of that crazy lead to Valerie, think it was Tommy Tedesco playing). The 4 actors were mediocre musicians at best, (although Nesmith had some great solo stuff), but the end product made for a nice catalog of pop fluff.

No, the Monkees weren't a Saturday morning kids show. They were patterned after the Beatles and the humour in the movie 'A Hard Day's Night'. They were on Sunday evening to my recollection.

Never even knew that the Monkees show had won two emmys. And the yet show flamed out as quickly as it lit up the tv spectrum.

They flamed out because the guys wanted to do their own things NBC wanted a 3rd season but the guys were just tired of doing the show so NBC decided to cancel the show..

I can understand getting tired but in retrospect, the boys really f-cked up their careers by not doing a 3rd season. By the second season they already were able to compose their own music on their albums, so why f-ck it up by starring in a forgettable picture, like Head?

Byron Gordon with NBC and the Monkees everything should've been 50/50 and NBC wanted everything their way but if they would've Gave them a chance and listen to what they wrote things might've been better!

Byron Gordon The show was cancelled. They had no choice. And Head works much better today as comedy than the series. Even they say so.

+Byron Gordon From what I remember, the boys wanted to change the format to a variety show rather than go another round as a sitcom. NBC refused and as soon as they were able, cancelled the show and the band fell off the charts not long after. Everyone made their money, so they didn't care anymore - Hollywood hasn't changed a bit. Schneider & Rafelson wanted to do movies anyway and they used Monkee Money to do it.

This is back when there weren't any politics in the acceptance speeches. I no longer watch award shows because of how they have screwed them up. But this was very pleasing to see. Everyone was just having a great time & that's all they wanted the podium for. And Jimmy was just hilarious here!

Wow, what a gem! True history, Monkee magic! I thought that was the girl who played "Buffy" on "Family Affair"; ironically wasn't her surname Jones--oh yes, Anissa Jones. Her life ended very early, sad. That was the Scnozzola Jimmy Durante with her, wasn't he? I noticed toward the end of the video some guy in red came over to the Monkees as if to say something, I wonder what. Thanks for showing this!

The saddest part of seeing this is that the great Durante outlived Anissa Jones by four years....he died at age 86 in 1980 while she died tragically at age 18 a mere 9 years after this was shot.

The Emmy Awards of today are much more energetic than what they were years ago. Is that "Buffy" Anissa Jones from Family Affair??? What a sweet little girl who grew into a drug addict and died so young.

Her frickin' mother drove her out of the frickin' house and sent her to prison/detention center for a few months, and had poor Anissa working in show business from the age of 3, and didn't look after her precious gift from the heavens above, totally neglecting her, thank-you Mommie Dearest, and Anissa would still be alive if it wasn't for her horrible upbringing(Mommys side) and a drug dispenser, Doctor Feel Good, gave her the lethal drug(s) that ended her life, and he was found guilty and charged, and died soon after!!!!!!!!!!!! Her Mom sent her to a "prison", and she was so badly treated at home that she ran away (her mom had her imprisoned for being a runaway), her dad who worked as a space engineer, passed away at 40 something.........................she ran into a totally "wrong crowd", and got involved with substance abuse etc, especially later, because she wasn't cared for properly and showed the love she dearly deserved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank's for reminding me, but I AM taking my pills...any advice, oh, I just glanced over my response, IT IS a little impassioned, you know, at the immediacy of the time that I intially reacted, the heat was high, so that's why my response is fiery and I'm, oh dang it, I used that word already, I hate to be repetitive, so, uh...what was I talking about...nighty nite, night-insert sleeping icon-.-??? P.S.-I REALLY am taking a lot of naps, but their unintentional, I don't think the med's are causing me to want to sleep a lot, I ust sort of black out, maybe I as partially blacked out when I wrote my response, even though, to the very core, it's true to my heart...feelings, although I guess I could have said it toned down more than what it is, but heck, I'm too tired to do a re-write, I need a nap!!!!!

The Lovin' Spoonful were considered as possible Monkees, for the show. The producers wanted to get an already established band and build the series around them the same way that the Beatles had their films built around them. This is a possible urban legend.

No, it is true but the musician's just didn't have the right chemistry to appear on camera. They weren't actors.
