Monoprice may have made its name making cheap HDMI cables but there's absolutely nothing cheap about their new line of audiophile-grade Monolith amplifiers. The Monolith 7 is a 7-channel, 200wpc (with all channels driven), 93 pound beast of an amplifier. From its build to astonishing real-world performance the Monolith 7 may just rank as one of the best price/performance amplifiers you can buy.
We put the Monolith through a battery of tests and came away impressed. Watch our Video review and be sure to check out our full review with bench test results to understand why this amplifier is so good.

Finally a guy who is prepared to debunk all the audio industry BS. I am a professional audio technician (sound engineer) who understands and appreciates the advice you can offer to the average audio consumer. There are so many misconceptions and lies regarding home audio gear....always has been. Being able to wade through the BS and arrive at an affordable, efficient option for your home audio, based on your requirements, is what will keep this site relevant and essential. Keep up the battle!

Just like speakers every company has there own characteristics and sound. No different from amps and the companies that design and build them. Dollar for dollar this is a great amp. Great for the family thats on a budget. It's not a McIntosh or a Levinson amp. Which is light years ahead of bryston or paramount. I'm not knocking them. My liking is for musical fidelity amps. And I run the B&W 702 and 702 bookshelf center being htms71s3 to match Thru a Nad M17 processor. I love what I have. For anyone that wants to keep costs down and have a very well performing amp no matter how many channels they desire. This will be great.

Thank you for this review. I have recently purchased the Monolith 200x5 and love it! I still have my RX-Z9, so now I have my RF-7ii’s powered by my McIntosh MC-252 and the Monolith powering center, surround channels, and front effect speakers. So now when I feel comfortable just don’t right now, too concerned about quality of these pre-pros and receivers. I will upgrade to a Yamaha pre-pro

Super helpful--not a lot of BS, obvious knowledge of engineering and pointed out clearly pros/cons of the device. I'm certainly have this on the short list for my tri-amped digitally filtered home brewed--but using SOTA drivers (Audio Elegance, Audio Technology C-Quenze, and Aurum Cantus) speakers. May go with 5 channel version and a heavy duty stereo Class D amp to plumb the limits of the very capable AE 15" woofers. Great review and have subscribed.

Thanks for this review. Very trusted and respected information. Iam particularly happy yo see this review on the Denon. I recently purchased the X2300 as I was debating over the X4300 or the Yamaha 1060. Any opinions prior to another purchase? If Denon is a more popular choice, does anyone have an opinion regarding the equivalent Marantz? I like the HEOS option but don't have to have it if the Yamaha 1060 is outright better... THANKS GENE ON ALL YOUR EFFORTS. It's truly appreciated my many like myself. I look for these videos every time I turn on youtube.

Here's another vote for Emotiva amps! I had never heard of the brand, and initially thought it was some Russian thing. Found out they're located in a suburb of Nashville, and had a nice DAC with a remote control, so I got one. Never got to use it where I was. When I was settling into my new home and had so much boxed up tight, I tried to cobble together a stereo with what I had found so far. Sadly my higher power amps all had electrical issues, so I remembered Emotiva and found a couple monoblocks on sale on Amazon. Worked pretty well. I too insist on gear with AES14 line in, so that was one selling point. I don't see why so many high priced brands still skimp on connectors, and then expect us to buy overpriced wire to try to mitigate that oversight.

“. . . you get real, unadulterated, unbridled power that will rock the very foundations of Middle Earth . . .” so, since I live in New Zealand, this is the amplifier for me :). I bought the Monolith 5 and Denon 3600 AVR. Previously had just the Denon 1400, and no amp. I went from 160 watts total to 1,210 watts total. A 7.5 fold difference. I can't tell a damn difference! In fact, it seems a bit quieter. 5.2.2 system. Not sure what to do. Did Audyssey screw up the mix? I'm pretty good at setups, every setting seems correct. I just don't get it. Very underwhelmed.

Nice review on the Monoprice Monolith Amp. I'm looking to start audio system for mainly music listening, but that could also sub for watching movies/TV. Like to start w/ a Integrated Amp, just cause I think they may be better than AVRs, but I'm not too sure how to do this if I start off w/ an integrated. I guess I can go with a AVR but, I don't know...I only heard one that I was very impressed with and that was Anthem products. Any advice for a limited salary to start? Maybe 3000.00 tops, less would be better, but that is my ceiling for now.

Hey Gene, thanks again for the info. I'd be curious about your thoughts on what improvements if any a much higher end home theater amp would offer. I'm always tempted to look to these value brands but my German brain tells to keep looking for the likes of Rotel, Marantz or even used McIntosh for that little increase in performance. Hope this gets answered, thanks.

J Herberger The higher end stuff usually offers balanced inputs, better aesthetics and more power. Truly state of the art amps have fully differential outputs but most of the brands you mention do not. fully differential outputs offer benefits of lower distortion but the audible difference is pretty minute considering the cost factor.

Great review Gene! How would you compare this to Emotiva XPA-7 irrespective of the price difference? Which one would you buy if you need a 7 channel amplifier with budget < 2K?

I haven't tested Gen3 Emotiva amps and the distortion results I've seen tested on Stereophile and by THX aren't too flattering so I reserve recommending their amps until I test one myself. The Monoprice amp is a solid recommendation.

The 5 channel version runs the same 2 toroidal transformers, with that being said, isn't that a better choice than the 7 channel if one doesn't need the 2 extra channels??

Gene, thank you providing a wonderful review. You guys at Audioholics always do a great job and provide objective reviews. I just purchased a Monolith 7 amplifier last week and it is a great sounding amp. I have Outlaw 7700 amp for my home theater. For testing purposes, I switched the Outlaw with Monolith. I couldn't tell any difference in sound produced by Monolith compared to Outlaw 7700. I paired Monolith amp with Yamaha RXA-3060 AV receiver for my living room application. It is a great sounding amp. Only drawback I can think of is that it gets really hot. I have placed "AC Infinity Aircom S9" fans on the top of the amp. My question is since this amp is running relay hot, how it would impact its longevity? Specifications on this amp are exactly similar to ATI 2007 amp. The body style also appears to me same as ATI 2007 with exception of the front plate. Good amp!!Thanks again for the review. I'm looking to buy in-wall speakers. Any good recommendation?

Hello Pete, I was curious about the sound difference with amps connected to your Yamaha 3060. I also have the 3060 and I am enjoying the sound of it very much. I am using the amps in the receiver because my speakers are fairly easy to drive (Ascend Acoustics towers) I was wondering if you could provide some insight on how an external amp has improved the sound for you. Thanks much!

Hi e hall: if you are enjoying the sound with amp in the receiver, then it is what it matters. The issue I had was the RXA-3060 is 150-watts with 2-channels driven. I was trying to power 9 in-wall/ceilings definitive tech speakers with 90db sensitivity and 8-ohm impedance in my living room. 3060 is 150-watts with 2-channel driven (8-ohm) (Roughly: 150*2 = 300 watts, then 300watt/9 = 33 watts/speaker). My speakers are rated at 150watts. I was having a hard time listening to dialogues and shows that are Dolby digital. Plus, the receiver was running too hot trying to power the speakers with under-rated power and at the same time decode the sound. My solution was to attach 7 channels to the external amp (Monolith 7, rated at 200-watts for 8-ohm speakers) and 2 channels (front presence) to the 3060 amp to make it 7.2.2 set-up. The dialogues seem to be clearer compared to just using the amp in 3060. Lows and highs are well defined and the receiver is running relatively less hot. My thought process was let the 3060 to decode the sound, and the external amp to power speakers. I wish I could have purchased pre-am, but 3060 is a nice receiver. Thanks.

Pete- Thanks so much. Yes it's sounds like you needed an Amp for your application. Yeah, a decent Pre amp is probably going to run $2500 or so, but I'm sure the 3060 performs quite well in a pre amp capacity. I am only running 3.1 now so It's seems to have enough power at the moment. Thanks again for the reply Pete. Earl

I have not used any of these amps, and i don't have much to say about how well it works and sounds... but I do have a little bit to say about the temperature rating. IMHO the minimum rating I saw anywhere from my electronics manufacturing days are always starting at 85C and up, never anything less than 85C. so really 85C rated is nothing to shout about. However! it looks like it is at least using decent Nippon Chemicon SMH or similar main filtering caps, not off brand caps that would dry out in a few years. as for mono-block construction, I'd say it's almost, since it still share a transformer, which in theory could allow one module affect the other via the shared transformer, but that's just my nitpicking definition. ;)

They state that there is no limiter or protection circuitry in the signal path. Does that mean there is still protection elsewhere in the system to protect your gear? Sounds like a bad thing marketed in a good way. I want to get this to provide some overhead for my surrounds, but nervous about damaging my gear.

We here in europe would be very happy to see their monolith models for europe with the same price point. They would swipe the market here with the their performance.

@@BoondockSaint0310 I asked Monoprice that question two weeks ago and the answer was no. Emotiva on the other hand have a universal power supply hence why they are outselling other US brands. They do ship to Europe though, but you'd need a step down transformer to use it.
