Abstract winter landscape. Acrylic on canvas using various monoprinting techniques.
No Brushes, and NO black paint !
This composition is built up by applying various layers of paint, through the use of colour, tone and texture the final result this atmospheric winter landscape. I begin by making a few sketches to use as a rough guide to the painting trying to create a focal point and plan the colours that will work. If it helps look at photographs and work by other artists of similar subject matter. I filmed this as a time lapse video because in reality the finished film would be much too long. The painting took 8 hours, I change it and paint over sections that don't work, you can see those mistakes in the demo.
Begin with the light background (Sky) using Cerulean Blue, Yellow Ochre and White.
spread a thin mix of these colours onto the plastic transfer sheet. Place onto the surface of the canvas, apply light pressure to transfer the paint in loose style. While the paint is still wet blend the colours with a soft rag or sponge. Allow to dry before moving to the next stage.
The mid tones, this is used to create the middle distance of the landscape and begin to work on the structure of the composition. Work from rough sketches to establish the forms and focal points. Colours used for this are White, Cerulean Blue and a little Cadmium Red. Leave the top section of the painting and apply this layer to the mid section. Remember to keep everything quite abstract and loose at this stage. If it becomes too dark, allow to dry then add lighter colours.
Dark tones. This is when you begin to establish the landscape, try not to draw the image, this is an abstract representation of a winter landscape, the trees and snow covered lane only hinted at. Colours used for this stage Prussian Blue, Burnt Umber. As the composition progresses the transfer sheets become smaller, allowing more control of the paint, use a blunt pencil to make lines and suggest branches with a few marks. This stage is easy to overwork so try to restrict the urge to cover the painting. Mistakes can be over painted with a lighter colour. Final stage is to add a few highlights at the front edge of the painting. Apply thick paint in small patches (White with a little Yellow Ochre)
The canvas is prepared with at least 4 coats of gesso to create a smooth paper like surface, this is important for the monoprinting techniques to work. You could use a heavyweight card for this or a 200gsm cartridge paper.
When finished apply a couple of coats of acrylic matt varnish.
Materials :
Stretched canvas 20" x 20" primed with 4 coats of gesso primer to achieve a highly smooth surface.
The transfer sheet used for this demo is created from plastic bags, use recycled carriers or waste bin liners, these sheets can be used many times. Experiment with different types of plastic or foil. You can get some really good results and it costs nothing !
Paint :
Winsor & Newton Galeria Acrylic
Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Cerulean Blue, Prussian Blue, Burnt Umber, White,
Rags, sponge, cotton buds, bamboo skewers.

I am landscape painter myself, but my style is more realistic. I do enjoy some abstract landscapes but honestly its hard to find one to my liking. Most have simple composition, or same basically. Quite often colors don't really work that well together. But now i must admit this is pure gem. Mission of art is to produce emotional response and feeling, and this piece does that perfectly. If I was to nitpick, i would say there is only one flaw and that is its to small. It would be perfect as one really large painting. 😉 Thank you for posting this, it was pleasure to watch it.

Thanks for your positive response to this demo, it's always appreciated when I recieve comments like this. I try with the demos to show the process of creativity and admit this was a struggle, the result has good and bad points. I'm planning another painting on a larger scale.

I just found your channel and totally love watching you create; it’s very relaxing. I honestly didn’t even look at the title and the first thing that came to me was winter in a forest. It’s beautiful. I also see people, but I’m not sure what they’re doing. I love how we all can see something different.

Thanks, I think by keeping the work a loose and fairly abstract composition you avoid just looking like a conventional landscape especially a winter scene which can look a bit like a Christmas card.

Thank you for making these tutorials. I've been trying to figure out how to successfully create this style of art but was asking for advice by the wrong name i guess. I kept calling this style etching, which is why i couldn't figure out how to get this type of result. HOWEVER i did learn by trial and error that if you apply enough pressure with tape (any kind will do, the stronger the tape the more dramatic the result, scotch tape, making tape, electrical tape, duct tape ect...) you can achieve a distressed look with acrylic paint. Now maybe everybody knew this already, but i myself did not. Hopefully this revelation will save another creative sound needless pondering... Anyhoo, thanks again! 🖖😀🎨

Hi Dan. Personally, I find this peice absolutley wonderful. I live in an area surrounded by several Oak and Beech woods. You have captured something I have seen in them, but not quite been able to capture.. i.e. the spirit of the woodand, not with with photos or paint. I'm inspired again. I've been focusing on my digital art of late. Now I feel that it's time to paint again. Thank you.

Thanks for your kind comments Gordon, I must admit this one was a struggle and didn't nearly make it. I suppose it shows that if you take your time and keep working it does eventually turn out OK in the end. I found with this painting if I left it unfinished for a few hours (take the dog for a walk !) Then return to it with fresh eyes it begins to make sense. Thanks for your feedback and comments, much appreciated.

@@DanTirels Hi again. When one has worked too long at a project in once sitting, Brain Fade" becomes a real problem. The only way I ever found to relieve it, is to walk away from something which is not going well. 1 to 3 hours, whilst the brain clears is usually sufficient. Sometimes even overnight. Pushing oneself too hard, is seldom productive.

My first reaction is masts in a crowded harbor. I love that gorgeous Prussian Blue. Do you put something beneath the canvas in the space between the canvas and the table surface?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 4 жыл бұрын
I think the Prussian Blue, mixed with a little Burnt Umber works much better than Black particularly with this landscape. The canvas is stretched and primed so has a nice surface to work on without extra support. Thanks for your feedback and comments.
