Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I am attempting to replicate The Monospinner. It is apparently the simplest controllable flying machine in existence and has only 1 moving part. Despite its mechanical simplicity, the way it controls itself in the air with only 1 moving part seems quite complicated. I don't know how it actually works, but I attempted to make my version of controls anyway!

Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

For the "simplest flying machine", it sure looks like it needs a boatload of equations and fine tuning. But good job making it much simpler, without any fancy algorithms and such.

Now that we're on a subject of "simple" helicopters, take a look at Tom Stanton's "Drone Helicopter Hybrid" video. It's about a model helicopter that varies pitch of the main rotor only by changing its speed.

Have you considered making a nuclear fission generator? It's very simple and would probably only take like ten minutes assuming you don't implode.

You shouldn’t joke back in the 1980s if I can remember the government gave normal but smart people the challenge to design a nuclear bomb from information in public libraries and they succeeded in designing it was never built but a nuclear physicist said their design would work

Impossible in real life because a screw can't possibly move enough air to lift anything, but it might work in trailmakers or scrap mechanic as long as it's spinning at an extremely high speed.

@@theyeetus1428 it could work in real life too the problem Da Vinci had was that he didnt have a powerfull enough engine that was small to fit the build, that is why it didnt work then, and also now we dont think about creating it bc it would be inefficent

I actually think it seemed more successful that the video clips he showed of the actual thing! Which is seriously impressive in regards to the programming of trailmakers! That said, I’m assuming the game doesn’t process air resistance of objects that aren’t registered as “wings” or whatever? That may simplify things a bit.

@@synapticbit I doubt that, unless you are talking about the part of the video where they showed the contrast without an algorithm. He was using what looked like a 3d tracked object to control it and with the added bonus of not being direction dependent. ScrapMans on the other hand requires you to pay attention to the direction. (as far as I could tell.) Still vary amazing that he was able to control it at all.

I love it how using the games compass sensors he effectively did exactly what the 'complicated algorithm' does, of course the algorithm is complicated because the drone doesn't have access to an absolute North with perfect precision and needs a bunch of PID and cordinate control code etc but scrapman's approach is the basic principle that the drone uses to control its attitude it's just easier to do it in trailmakers because there is less physics to deal with

The problem (i assume) is that you are using direction relative to n,s,e,w. the system works well when you are in the same plane as the detection (when you are horizontal) but when you are sideways the entire creation is facing a certain direction. this is causing a change in the outputs from the compass. the change in outputs increases with the change in angle relative to the horizontal plane. please don't roast me because i don't play trailmakers so i have no idea how accurate my explanation is. and i don't have Albert Einstein IQ so i cannot exactly predict the change in output(and i don't have the time to do so)

Moving could have been significantly improved by giving a general hover power of .5 and adding power in turn angle so you dont lose lift and stay more stable.

I love how they took a design that could *technically* move in all directions, then just threw some mathematicians and computers at the problem to make it work in practice.

"The one moving part" is an exception to the fact there can be sensor and pre programmed circuit board to alter the speed of the motor to change direction, speed, altitudes and such...

@@logicbuilder1204 Technically modern IMU circuits (especially the accelerometers specifically) still have “moving parts” just very very small ones. Or rather, parts of it are moving I suppose. Vaguely similar to how the slight movement of a bimetallic strip can be measured to tell change in temperature.

Exactly my thought, and made me wonder if you made more of the body out of wing what would it look like. Also with the crazy power the rotters have in this game could you make a literal powered boomerang? Just build a boomerang, add weight and rotors mid off center and just go, might even be able to control direction much the same as this varying the speed on the rotor.

The satisfaction of seeing you figure out how to turn was incredible! Honestly, the fact that you can get those actual directional inputs makes it work so much easier than it would be IRL.

I bet that if you had tilt sensors you could automate the process of righting it. Also, can you change the speed using logic, or only off/on? If you can have a variable amount of speed, you could be much more subtle about your controls. I'd love to see you try and get this thing all the way to a fully controllable vehicle, maybe with a piston powered jump to take off, and use it in Multiplayer Monday just to flex!

Holy crap, it's totally amazing that you got any control at all out of that thing. I guess the reason it didn't work as well when you were only doing quarter-circles on the compass sensors is it takes a sec for the heli blades to spin up and they just weren't giving it enough time.

probably a project for scrap mechanic, but a gadget often used in competitive robotics competitions is the Omni Wheel. It's a big wheel with a bunch of free-floating rollers around the edge, and when four of them are assembled on a frame in a cross formation, it allows for omni-directional movement. The meccanum wheel, based on the same concept, can be arranged like a car's wheels.

Ideas: La Princesse (Giant mechanical spider bot) Tradinno (an actual robotic fire-breathing flying dragon) F60 conveyer bridge (you’ll see) NASA Crawler-transporters (for extra heavy things) Taisun Cranes (Giant cranes) Bagger 293 or Bagger 288 (288 is smaller) Schwerer Gustav (German Wonder Weapon, the largest railway gun with an 80cm/31 inch barrel width)

Amazing, you achieved dynamic attitude haha! Maybe placing the compasses under the seats (if they are heavier than regular blocks) would enable you to turn directly without having to level off first. The first draft without the compasses reminded me of the crazy contraptions my son used to make when he was three lol!

I think I see how this works, the lift of the helicopter rotor and blades are keeping it up for lift, and the weights on the end are balancing the torque of the helicopter blades going round and round and yanking the rest of the creation in different ways, and when it turns one way, the blades lift up on side forcing it in one direction and when it turns the other way the blades are under the rest of the creation and lifts up that one side to tilt the other way.(I big brain🤓)

The issue you ran into was your PID loop being too slow, & coarse, but you did get the basics. Well done.

Also, the issues you had where you tipped too far, and it became unrecoverable were probably because you were no longer getting ‘triggers’ for certain directions on the compasses, since it ‘a available orientations were now (for example) north, up, south, down, instead of north, east, south, west. Some tilt sensors tied in to restrict how far it would let the craft tilt could probably solve that issue. Also, you might get better flight characteristics by reversing what your compass inputs do, shutting *off* the rotor to reduce lift at certain points, or by using two helicopter engines to mimic a multi-speed motor like the one the real-world version has. Sure, you’d technically be doubling the number of moving parts in the game, but only to mimic capabilities of the ‘single’ part has in the real world.

From what I understand about the controls (this is just a guess) it seems like the way it changes directions is like a digital swashplate. So say it's spinning on a grid with negative and positive X & Y dimensions and the center of rotation is at (0,0). So say you want to move towards the positive X direction, the prop would slow down slightly when (during the rotation of the entire machine) it is in the most Positive position of the machine on the X-axis, and as the entire machine continues to rotate, the prop with speed up to max what it is in the Negative most position on the X-axis while the rest of the machine body is in the positive section. This would generate acceleration in direction of the Positive X-axis. Hope this helps. Edit: a compass might work Edit 2: the compasses might need to be on a gimble

Wow that's a really interesting contraption. I think the reason it's controllable is because the counterweights make it so that the blades are always tilted at an angle not parallel to the ground, but it's spinning due to some gyroscopic force, so the average thrust is upwards. And then to turn the flyer in any which way, simply speed up the blades for a split second while they are pointed away from that direction, generating an imbalance of thrust in that direction.

Scrapman I am very impressed. You did it XD. Tbh I don't know Wtf was going on with that equation. It reminded me of one segment of a few scientists trying to explain what's going on inside a block hole with equations. You also created the control method exactly how I expected it to work but with a laser or radio wave remote or something like that.

Hey ScrapMan, you should try to build an ornithopter in Scrap Mechanic. I've personally discovered that it is surprisingly easy to build one using a few smart engines. (And the wings mod, of course.) It would make for an entertaining video to watch.

Having watched the whole video now I think there's one change that could have been added to your final prototype to improve the flight characteristics considerably. I would have added one final logic piece that was just a toggle to turn the rotor on, but set to something like 60-80% output, whatever you would need to maintain a mostly level hover. This way you could set a "hover throttle" and then have altitude control by only occasionally applying full power, and then dropping by just turning the throttle off. This would also allow you to dial in the directional controls quite a bit more, as you'd be able to reduce the angular range at which they activate without concern that they wouldn't provide enough overall thrust just to stay in the air. This should make leveling out and actually changing direction a lot more controllable.

Add Weights on the Propeller side, to level it up. The centripetal force or weights shifting on outside centers the lift more. You have seats on outside, causing it to lean and go in one direction.

hey Scrapman, looks like they were using a electronic gyroscope for the cardinal directions, because once something gets angled too far the compasses don't register the direction their facing properly, while a gyroscopic one can tell no matter what angle the creation is at.

there's this movie called _The 6th day_ (from 2000, starring Arnie), and there are these "cool" transforming helicopters (called whispercrafts) in it... they can switch between helicopter mode, and jet mode, basically (also reminds me of these triple transformers from the war for cybertron game: heli - jet - bot)

I haven't looked into it, but my guess is that it is very similar to a digitally controlled swashplate. Basically, it has a sensor to sense its orientation, and when the blade is on one side, it increases the rpm, and on the other side, it decreases it, this way it will move toward the side that has decreased rpm. I saw something similar a while back, basically, its single propeller had a mechanism that made the blades pitch up when it brakes, and pitch down when it speeds up, then it would decrease rpm in one position, and increase in the other, causing the blades to pitch, allowing it to control the helicopter. it can do this because a drone motor can accelerate to super high RPMs, and break to super low RPMs many times a second.

What's left now is to use a gyro and calculate the normal direction of the spin over a period of time and use that for auto stabilization. Then pick a maximum angle of inclination and when a button is pressed calculate a vector at that inclination that faces that direction. Apply an override to the auto stabilization when a button is pressed and the normal vector is far enough away from the desired inclination vector. This way the craft will stabilize itself when there is no input but as soon as a button is pressed it will rotate towards the desired direction and stop at the desired angle of inclination.

Of course they explain how it goes in places Scrapman. It's simple. They even showed the very simple formula, just don't forget that the torques are cancelled out by the cross coupling terms in the attitude dynamics. :P
