The elephant decided not to kill them. The dad had nothing to do with it, he could have just as easily been crushed along with his whole family. It just comes down to what the elephant wanted to do to them, and it decided not to crush them. There’s no heroism or respect or anything impacting this from the human perspective aside from the dad’s decision to put them them at the elephant’s mercy.
