3 жыл бұрын2020's Monster hunter is a new horror action adventure monster movie starring Milla Jovovich of Resident Evil fame, and it's pretty much the same movie as 2020's Love and Monsters starring Dylan O'Brien, which we covered in the video "How to Build the Ultimate Movie Monster | Film Perfection". Or, a loud Hollywood blockbuster spectacle version of it, and not in a good way. Whereas Love and Monsters was a smaller production that made you feel and stayed with you, Monster Hunter is a Michael Bay Transformers version of the same movie that you can watch while stuffing popcorn in your mouth and then immediately forget. So in today's Anatomy of a Failure, let's compare Monster Hunter to Love and Monsters to see how it became a lesser version of the same movie -- how the movie monsters between the two are handled differently the two?

One of the (many) biggest problems I had was that the environments in this movie is •empty desert •rocks •generic cave. While in the source material the environments are as colourful, diverse, and detailed as the hundreds of monsters inhabiting them. Like the rest of the movie the source material has been reduced to “cool monster to attack”

Monster Hunter 4 has some of the best maps in the series IMO, Ancients Steppe is a large series of mountains with scattered ruins of a bygone civilization, Sunken Hollow is a cave system decorated with the traps of the Nerscylla that also transforms into a fiery volcano when certain conditions are meet, but just cutting the chase mentioning the most astonishing location of all, Mount Heaven, a huge mountain that literally floats in the sky held together by gigantic roots. Those are impressive locations yet these writers exclusively choose desserts because of pure laziness, at least in the dessert maps you have some distractions like the Dunes that is around a gigantic oasis or the Spire wasteland which has those towering ant colonies that you can generally see everywhere you are in the map. But no, this movie just chooses a boring, warren dessert

@@bonelesschickennuggets1868 Beyond it being called the WIldspire Wastes, yeah. Plus, there's so many more fitting monsters. The Not-Nerscylla could've been (actual) Shrouded Nerscylla (and only one or two at most, not a swarm of them). A Rathian could've been there instead of her male counterpart who isn't typically a desert-dweller (and lore could've been brought up about how such Rathian typically lost a fight for the right to be with a Rathalos, and thus moved to the desert to raise her young since the fights are after the eggs are...set to be due). Heck, if they watned an Elder Dragon, the Mohrans or the Teostra or Lunastra would've been perfect to include

The painful part is that Monster Hunter already has a rich world with rich lore. They could have picked any part focusing on just the Monster Hunter universe. Like maybe a hunter child growing up to avenge his village, with the journey highlighting the beautiful environments, ecosystems, really eye candy for fans which this movie was focusing a lot on-eye candy. Or even just a hunter guild prepping for the coming of the Fatalis (which is basically the overarching "villain" type character monster in the world of MonHun). Anything that stuck with just the Monster Hunter universe would have been a better movie.

Its not just that they could have picked some piece of lore from Monster Hunter, they totally misinterpreted Monster Hunter: its not a desperate grimdark world where survival is all that matters, where giant monsters roam every corner and only the strong matter, its a lifelight world where people live in harmony with nature, where hunting this creatures is just a job that certain people do and they are quite joyful to do it, its a world where both sides, the human civilizations and the monster infested places leave separated but respectful of each other. God damn, the world is so lifelight it doesnt even has a death mechanic, youre knocked out and dragged back into town by a bunch of talking cats.

"It's only weak before it breathes fire" Nah, just equip Frost-based elemental weapons, you're basically throwing fire against fire by using flame-elemental weapons. The weakness is when it is crashed down to the ground...... it has no 'Weak before it breathes fire' Rathian/Rathalos would just whip you with its poisoned tail.

@@SkeithSheep They still inflict poison... but you know what i mean.. Who is fighting Rathalos and using a flame-based weapon? (Not me at least) If it's Barioth i understand that same as a lightning-based weapon, but Rathalos? The movie directors/actors would've have tried and played the game once to feel the basics before doing something or make the maincharacter that he/she is doing a blunt very long work and learn that flame-based weapons will just get tanked by him, that the only impressive here is the visuals but still Rathalos slamming his wing at the ground is basically breaking his bones as well, they clearly making the Wyvern into a different one.

How To Train Your Dragon is probably closer in terms of themes and feel to what a Monster Hunter movie should be like. Maybe also Princess Mononoke, for a less goofy and more allegorical take on the matter. This is more like they were trying to make Resident Evil: Escape From Skull Island, or something.

Correction: you don't need to attach anything tragic to your monsters. They just need some kind of individual importance. Each monster should be important to the story for some reason other than your hero having something to fight. Maybe the monsters themselves have interesting backgrounds, maybe there's a human who basically farms some of the more harmless ones. There are endless possibilities to give their appearences meaning that don't involve past trauma of the protagonist.

In fear of having this comment lost in the 7000+ comments that there are here. My biggest issue with this movie is that it didnt need to be a "trapped in another world" narrative. The games have nothing to do with other worlds, you play as a rookie hunter thats learning from the very basics to end up killing dragons, and that progression is what makes the games awesome. I fell in love with the franchise when I played mosnter hunter 3. In there, after the first couple of tutorial missions, you end up in a fishing mission. Just kill fat harmless dinosaur fishes and gather their materials for food for the village. Something super simple for the beginer levels, right? NO! You get ambushed by a gigantic electric crocodile thats strong enough to crush rocks with its tail whips, and it can and will one shot you unless you manage to hide and run away. We later learn that this particular monster has been terrorizing the village, and not even the veteran hunters there can face it. So when halfway through the game the monster comes back, and this time you have to face it using everything you learnt so far, now armed with the high tier equipment you crafted yourself by killing a neverending series of escalating monsters. And that fight is just epic. Finishing it off, and saving the village, even if it wasnt the end of the game, has got to be one of the most memorable moments in any video game I played. And that right there should have been the movie. Following the hero journey of a rookie hunter who gets recks by this huge impossible to beat monster, only for them to slay the beast at the end thanks to the experience they learnt along the way.

the lagiacrus! one of my favorite monsters from the series. the build up to fighting it is amazing, and then afterwards you learn its middle of the pack in terms of monsters capable of kicking your ass.

That’s pretty much how every game is. Start off as a rookie hunter and handle whatever the monster is causing trouble but what made it interesting was each flagship monster was causing issues in different ways. Gore was infecting monsters with a virus as it tried to shed itself, Valstrax was causing a lot of issues and ultimately was bringing calamity to the four villages, and Rise had Magnamalo who was supposed to be the reason why the rampages have been occurring. The only one that has them travel is World but they were traveling lands and they were still the same universe as MH. We didn’t need to change from reality to fantasy since it was already in the world of MH. This is a common thing most studios do who thinks to make a movie from a series that’s beloved to many: just so they don’t understand who the monsters are respectfully, take money from fans and etc.

The monsters in the games aren’t hollow at all. Each has a fun design and a place in the ecosystem. Some even have motivations. Like others have said, the monsters are the main part of the experience. The hunters in the games actually have it quite good, too.

@@jpraczbr8413 Videogame movie curse: they just wanted the brand recognition, and that's why the cheaper designs to replicate are quite on point visually: weapons and armors and such... But the studio never bothered to do the legwork of understanding the game, the setting and the possibilities it has for a movie... and instead went the route of "take generic script number 3 and slap Monster Hunter all over it" I mean... I dunno, it's just any other "army platoon gets lost in a strange place and have to shoot their way out" copyfest of a movie and slapping some Monster Hunter designs on it isn't gonna change that xD

Actually, if you look at Adam Sandler and his Netflix tenure, it's very profitable to make movies that bomb. In a weird way. It's all a tax write-off, once you have the cash in your pocket. Self-funding does a lot. Probably why Zack Snyder went that route.

I think you're right about the movie flopping, but for the wrong reasons. For Monster Hunter fans, the movie did so poorly in the area of fan service that it's borderline insulting, so many little details that added up to so many "wtf" moments. And if you're not a monster hunter fan you probably don't care much for anything other than "oh boy cool CGI monsters".

Here’s the thing: they didn’t make a monster hunter movie, they made a movie set in a monster hunter world. My making the main character get isekaied, they removed the possibility of tying the world to the characters, and that is bad. This movie could’ve been a deeper look into the monster hunter universe and lore than we see in the games, but instead it was just a generic action movie

The thing is that a Monster Hunter Movie being an Isekai is perfectly fine, it makes for a perfectly fine setting for us to explore the wonders of the MH world without the need for child actors and grow up montages. The movie just doesn't even know HOW to Isekai as a fish-out-of-water setting, which is like a basic fucking thing. The story was hell bent on the characters HAVE TO return to their world at the end for the majority of the plot only for it to just straight up say "no" 1 minute before the end-card. This story refuses to fucking commit to of its own fucking plot points.

I don't think that is necessarily the problem. The issue is they are isolated...the ship scene was a throwaway shot....Her ranger training translates to ninja/samurai skills 1 for 1 The best isekai focus on the world and how they learn to fit in with it, normally caring about something in the new world. She became a soldier probably to protect people Thus have her protect a village or group of people.

I'm not sure if he didn't mention it because of your reason, or because he hasn't heard of, or at least played, monster hunter before, because he refers to the MH universe as "infested with monsters", when in actuality, the monsters are just part of the ecosystem. He also refers to Diablos as "sand monster", and rathalos as "the dragon", and say what you will about diablos, Rathalos is essentially the poster child of MH, and contrary to the movie, they're actually weaker AFTER they breathe fire, but are weakest after getting knocked out of the sky by, say, a flash pod. And as a last tid bit, he never refers to it as a video-game adaptation, but just a monster movie ripping off another monster movie. with all that said, filmento isn't incorrect about this, I just think he missed the mark.

@@GREATGAIWAIN Ok, but for me, I feel that in order to explain why a movie is garbage, you need to understand what it's supposed to be, which in monster hunter, it isn't a monster movie, it's a video game adaptation. this isn't done, however, and is, rather than being compared to the games to see how the connections fall apart, is instead compared to a movie I never heard of, but doesn't seem all that comparable to monster hunter, and therefore, I think this video doesn't do as well as it could, at least in my eyes.

Their biggest mistake was taking a game that specialized in its culture and progression and turning it into a survival film. Like, bruh, the square doesn't go in the triangle hole. If something isn't made to be something else, then don't force it to. It WILL look bad, and it WILL cost you.

It could be done... Just look at the legends of the guild. It's rushed and rough on some edges... But ot could definitely work. Some of the barebones story of the older games can also be used to make a story... Like the huntsman (fromer GS user, now old and uses an LS on world), ace cadet, 4u's storyline, using portable 3rd's amatsu as a focal point, or just a starting from scratch hunter... It could be done, just the Director is bad. (Like really, it's the infamous RE live action director and his wife combo)

Having played the games, the comparison with Love and Monsters just proved how MH movie just missed almost everything. When I started playing, fighting even the weakest monster will make you feel powerless as you scramble across the menu and try to learn via baptism of Fire despite the tutorial.

But that aside, I rather mean how weirdly overwhelming a, let's say, Rathalos is shown here even when confronted with a goddamn gatling. These things are not made of explosive berries and stuff, they should hurt real hard. But the movie makes it seem like a Rathalos or Diablos is the worst that can appear when actually they are feared, but rather common monsters in the series. The movie disregards the factor of an ecology completely, hence my namedropping of Fatalis, a creature so powerful only its vague form is known and most whitnesses didn't live to tell the tale. Could that survive a nuke following this movie's logic? Oh please.

All of your criticism is true here, Filimento, but you're missing the most damning blow against this movie- These aren't just cool new monster designs, they're from a well established and beloved game series. I refused to watch this... Insult, since they took the wonderful, intriguing designs of Nercylla, ("Spider") Diablos ("Sand Monster"), and the iconic Rathalos ("Dragon") and dumbed them down to "just movie monsters". I screamed aloud in indignation when I heard "spider hivemind", since there's absolutely no indication that ability ever existed, and parasitic egg-laying? The screenwriters just took these pre-existing creatures and twisted them into what they needed for the plot, with no regard for anything else. I have over 3,000 hours played over the Monster Hunter series, and seeing the care put into designing each monster with their own ecological niche, habits, and semi-realistic mannerisms reduced to "Hurr Durr let's make a super big Rathalos and make a super dumb new weakness that never existed before because cool" is exquisitely painful. I hate what this movie has done to these monsters, and it doesn't even have the decency to be anything but loud dumb noise.

See, as a fan of the monster hunter game series, the BIGGEST sin this movie made is simply that they took a world that while dangerous, is generally pretty whimsical and hopeful and made it too serious, too gritty. It just doesn't capture the feel of the monster hunter world one bit. This is a world where people go out and beat massive dragons to death with oversized hammers and their pint-sized cat friend who is wearing a tutu. Its missing that heart and that fun that monster hunter has. Monster hunter should be able to always have an element of light-heartedness to it and its world this just doesn't capture this. This is chief among many major grievances like not using a single piece of music from the original anywhere in the film, the biggest fight being with a herd of herbivores that literally nobody even in-universe has been afraid of one bit, the monsters behavior being horribly out of line for what they are, the very little monster screen time, and I'm sorry but that is not a nerscylla that's a generic spider monster if I'd ever seen one. Definitely nothing like monster hunter's colorful resident 6-legged spider creature with massive extending jaws that wears the skin of its prey on its back.

My fiancé is close friends with a person higher up on the MH team at Capcom in Osaka. We met up with him a few years ago and he shook his head when my fiancé asked him about the movie development. He said something along the lines of "Mila Jovovich is in it, how do you THINK it's going?" He explained that the real reason why so many video game movie adaptations turn out like this is because executives over in Japan will have a director recommended to them. "Oh yeah, I know a guy! He knows how to make a successful Hollywood movie. So let's just go with him!" But by "SUCCESSFUL" they mean a movie that will make it's money back by following the safest formula possible...to appeal to a wider audience. That's why so many of these movie have a nearly identical formula. It's really sad these executives are told to trust these directors who couldn't care less about these properties. To them, better the lore/story, the more 'niche' it is.

The prevailing "wisdom" of "generic, dumbed down adaptations appeal to a wider audience than faithful ones" has been disproven time and time again. This movie was Paul W.S. I think that the whole "monsters reflect trauma" thingy would be just as bad as what we got, because it does not fit Monster Hunter at all. They should do what game did - make whole thing focused on monsters and lore of this world. Show wyverns' behavior and turf wars, let characters find their strenghts and weaknesses on their own, show how they turn scales and bones into new equipment. That way every new encounter would be another mystery to solve and will feel like a big obstacle to overcome. At the and have big battle with some Elder Dragon (Rathalos is NOT a dragon), so characters can return to home.

This movie is based on a game franchise.. As a fan of said franchise (Monster Hunter) I can give you the names of most of the bigger monster names; Rathalos is the dragon. Diablos is the 'Sand monster' and Nerscylla are the spiders. I personally think this movie would be better if we were seeing the perspective of an already established 'rookie' Hunter. Thoughts on my idea? Also you are welcome Filmento. (I wrote this on phone so it took me a while-) (Edit before anyone sees this: I'm PRETTY sure the spiders are nerscylla.) Also their Wyverns. Not dragons. Had to get that outta the way.

Yeah a rookie hunter story would be great tbh. They could've also used the barebones story of a lot of older games. Like the huntsman (the one on the cover of mh1, uses a gs. Now he is at world... The one always sitting and uses a ls now because he is old), using amatsu as a focal point of a tookie hunter, or just outright redetail 4u's story of gore/shagaru magala and the hunter. Etc... So many possible story to use, but the downfall was that they chose the wrong director. (Who not only ruined MH live action but also RE live action back in 2000'-2010's)

Nercilla swarms: "Spiders." Rathian: "Dragon" Diablos: "Dragon" This makes me unreasonably angry for some reason. Not at the video but at the movie for not ever actually introducing these magnificant beasts and their roll in the ecosystem. The lore and message of the games are such a nice little lesson on nature, respect and care for it, and the mutual benifits of doing so. This movie fucking kills me on so many levels.

@@NQUSTN Rathalos: Red scales, high flyer. All males. Very powerful flames with a poison-barbed tail. Rathian: Green scales. Low flyer. All female. More deadly tail, produces less flame. They mate with each other in, I'm pretty sure one of the only two examples of cross-species relationships, right next to the Lunestra and Teostra. Lore dumbing aside, pretty sure I saw both during the video, both being called "dragon"s.

Here's how a movie like this can ACTUALLY be done: Military Team gets teleported to Monster Hunter World Military Team then encounters a Diablos Military Team fires at the Diablos, which does fuck all due to how tough its hide is. Military Team gets saved by a Hunter, who's using a Greatsword, a weapon that would, by human world standards, be *way* too big and impractical to use. But the Hunter uses it just fine. Hunter suddenly gets knocked on his ass by the Diablos, which then buries into the sand. Hunter fishes through his bag, before groaning as he realizes he forgot to bring Sonic bombs. Soldier grabs a flashbang from his kit and throws it. The high pitched ring causes the Diablos to erupt from the ground. Hunter kills the Diablos. Hunter carves the Diablos, before going over to the Military Team. Military Team explains who they are, and the Hunter is completely unaware of who the hell they're talking about, but is intrigued by their vehicle(since cars don't exist in the MH world). Hunter decides to guide the team back to the designated obligatory Monster Hunter town, which will be Astera. Military Team is equipped with new weapons that are more capable of hunting monsters, and the vehicle is taken by the Research Commission to study how it works so they can reverse-engineer it. Cue training montage as the military team trains to become hunters. Initially they struggle to even lift the weapons, but they manage. They don't perfect it though. A month passes, and the team is finally ready for a quest; hunting a Great Jagra. Will continue when I feel like it.

Monster Hunter movie is indeed a big fat failure, but this video doesn´t lag behind, you commited the same main error that the director did, not checking or caring about the source material, Monster Hunter is not as much about people or hunters, BUT the monsters, tbh a good mh film would be more akin to a documentary, the whole series avoids making real main characters, and the thing even close to that in the first place are each game flagship monsters And yeah is not like you cant make a film with MCs out of MH, but neither the way they did it, and that you suggest, are any good. Your is better, but thats because is not hard to improve from the trash heap this film is

I would've prefered this movie if it is about a biologist getting transported to this new world of monster hunter, befriending natives, learning their cultures and customs and being fascinated by all the creatures in this new world. While at the same time introducing that this world isn't just amazing but also dangerous with hunters constantly putting their lives on the line to defend against natural threats such as elder dragons. And eventually the biologists decided to stay and became a handler to help reduce the casualties between hunters thru his intelligent mind and research of the monsters .

I lost all composure after seeing that. Every second throughout the movie I was expecting gore to appear and wreck sh*t up; and when it finally happened - at the last scene - when the dialogue and the music started building up in the background and they all looked at each that's when I looked at the time-stamp and realized it's been like 2 hours I started screaming before the credits even began to roll in.

This was supposed to be the most accurate video game movie to date, the amount of inaccuracies just pains me. Supposedly when the showed the real Monster Hunter team their movie design for diablos, they said the toes where too pointy and they would be more round to help with digging in the sand. That's the level the MH team is on, that the literal toes have to make sense. unfortunately outside of monster design it seems the MH team had no influence on the movie, other wise they wouldn't have used a charge blade move on switch axe, and rathians only weakness wouldn't have been when it was breathing fire.

This movie could’ve been so much better if they just took out the our world factor from it. If the main character originated from the Monster Hunter world, it would’ve been made so much easier to make the plot emotionally relevant.

You know what? Counter argument, It would have been better if it wasn't the military,... Imagine, if the plot was instead a small village from our world was transported into the Monster Hunter World, so now you have real tension for both parties,.. The village now has to struggle to quickly adapt to their new INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS location, having what we see as small monsters and easy early game monsters as the incredibly dangerous fight of survival with the villagers. Then when it seems that there is no hope of survival when an Anjanath rampages through the village, we are finally introduced to the Admiral and we see the complete difference between the humans of Monster Hunter and our worlds humans, and at this point in the movie is when we are completely drawn into the MH world, as the newest mission for Astera is the investigation and protection of this new village of strange people who don't speak their language. The climax of the movie would be the defense of the village against the giant Rathalos.

A zero to hero type story of a new hunter would work much better for the world of Monster Hunter, so there's no reason to dump anyone from our world into theirs.

In reality Monster hunter should have been a lighthearted action movie about the culture of the monster hunter world, they could have kept the character from another world thing and made it a big culture shock that these terrifying things are cause for celebration in their world, let her start out thinking hunters are insane because by our worlds standards they kinda are and then she slowly imbraces the madness in the world and learns what it means to hunt a monster.

Ah yes, when i think about monster hunter, giant spiders that put egg sacks in your stomach with the mentally scarring body horror is what pops to my mind. Monster hunter is my favorite military survival horror game

Nerscylla store dead gypceros to be eaten later. Khezu whelps are lain in carcasses. Gigginox eggs. Fatalis killing humans. Monster hunter is dark the same way the animal kingdom is dark. Its because they focus more on the hunters and make them like super hero caricatures, covering up that darkness.

Because they get paid for you buying the ticket, not for you enjoying the movie. Also, now they don't have to design the monsters, weapons, vehicles, etc. Saves a ton of time and money.

especially if even the trailer makes it look completely different and uninteresting. They're going to get a few people watching on name and then most people will find out it's bad and not watch it- can't keep that a secret. Good movies have repeat customers, recomendations, etc. that drive more sales. seems like a strategy that relies on people not watching movies the way they actually do.

I know that this is a sort of old vid but I have to mention that the last monster at the end was called Gore Magala and in the game he was introduced he stood as a huge threat not only just to the general existence of everything but it and the main character were personal enemies. The hunter had “slain” the monster only for it to come back stronger and when the hunter shows up to the final battle the cutscene that plays shows it observing the hunter checking to see if it was really you. So basically gore magala went from the most emotional enemy to literally nothing.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate that the guy just tore this movie asunder with just how it fails as a monster movie not even needing to mention how it fails as a monster hunter movie. Dude probably could have gotten another hour with how it fails in that aspect alone.

I'm pretty sure this guy has never even heard of monster hunter, given all the inconsistencies in in his critiques, and was only comparing it to love and monsters which probably wasn't a good idea.

@@meikaishithe fact he doesn't know about the series shows that he didn't do much research on the subject. Knowing that it's an adaptation of a video game puts some things into perspective, such as why Rathalos is the last threat, because he's practically the franchise mascot, ofcourse he's going to be the final battle. If you don't research the subject you're criticizing you're gonna make mistakes and those mistakes are going to cause your argument to lose ground.

If it was more like love and monsters it still would've gone against the series core theme of discovery and thriving with nature. At that point it's no longer monster hunter, so you might as well make it its' own original story.

@@thelonemask I think the point @atomicloli is trying to get at is that this being a terrible adaptation of the games has nothing to do with how to make a monster movie. The title of the video is "How to Fail at a Monster Movie" not "How to Fail at a Movie Adaptation". The two aren't in any way related. In my opinion, Filmento having no knowledge of the games the movie is based on means that it's probably for the best that he didn't make a comparison between the two. Leave it to people who actually know and play the games to tear the film apart for being a shit adaptation.

I just realized that the monster = trauma thing kinda was already done in a monster hunter game, at the start of Monster Hunter stories (don't know if you'll consider this a spoiler bc it's at the beginning cutscene) a mad Nargacuga attacks the village and kills a character's mother, making that character despise all monsters
