Captain Zac and Mary Thanks for sharing a quick adventure.. The Queen comes through again.. Nothing is safe when she has her line in the water… Looks like some winter weather is in the forecast for you today… Halibut fishing in the snow.. That would make a great video.. Tight Lines. Keep the Queen safe. E

Haha thanks Eric and that is very well said - nothing is safe when Mary's line is in the area! Some wind picked up today so I'll have to stay very close at best or just plan for twice as much action tomorrow when the wind is expected to calm down! Luckily, there is snow in the forecast tomorrow morning so there is still a chance of halibut fishing in the snow coming together! Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Fun catch! I’ve caught baby King crabs on my shrimp traps (let them go). They are cool looking. My neighbors got a 42” wide one during King season this year in Petersburg.

Wow @wbstone4388 a 42" wide king crab would be quite a feast! I feel your pain - I've been catching a lot of baby kings in my dungie pots lately as well. They are cool looking and have surprisingly sharp spines even for small crabs! Tight lines and full pots my friend! Captain Zac

Cool catch. That's another reason I like the electric reels. I see you had one. Is Mary just too traditional to try it yet??
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac 2 ай бұрын
Thanks Chuck! Yes you called it Mary was reluctant to switch to an electric reel in favor of the traditional gear. Either way, she'll undoubtedly continue to out-fish everyone else on the boat, myself and my electric reel included haha Thanks and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Thanks John I appreciate the positive comment and am glad you enjoyed this footage! Yes indeed - fresh king crab is amazing and definitely should not be over-cooked! Every so often they sell fresh king crab on the dock here in Juneau so if you are ever passing through maybe the stars will align! Tight lines as always my friend! Captain Zac

Hey Bradley many thanks for stopping by and I appreciate the positive comment! King crab is delicious and definitely worth putting on the bucket list to try one of these days! I'm hoping to re-connect with this crab later this season during the limited "opener" that allows local residents to harvest a few king crabs. Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac

That's insane! So cool. One crab looks like a meal for a family of 4. Too bad you couldn't keep it. Weird you can't use rods. Crab snares are pretty effective for catching crabs. Probably why I guess. 👍
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac Ай бұрын
Hi @PeelingLine thanks for watching and yes indeed a big king crab like this creates a feast for the whole family! The rod restriction isn't because they are more effective - I believe it because these fisheries are heavily regulated and Fish and Game wants to avoid people catching and keeping crabs as "by-catch" while halibut fishing. There are legal opportunities to harvest these crabs but it must be done with a pot or a crab ring. Also, these king crab are often 350-1000 feet deep so a rod and reel definitely wouldn't be the most effective tactic. I realize that is different for dungies which are relatively shallow. Thanks again and tight lines (and full pots) my friend! Captain Zac

@@CaptainZac That's fair but that's a lot of rope to put out for a crab ring.

Wow, thanks for the info? Didn't know about the R&R stipulations? Guess that law is geared toward the Commercial guys?
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac Ай бұрын
Hi @NRALifer1 yes since these king crabs are heavily regulated, the rod and reel restriction is primarily to avoid anglers keeping these crabs when caught as bycatch while fishing (mostly while halibut fishing). When they do a short king crab open season for residents here near Juneau, the only legal methods to harvest them are with a king crab pot or a crab ring. You should see the water during that king crab opener - it looks like a field of land mines with king crab pot buoys EVERYWHERE! Tight lines! Captain Zac

Plus it was a female, right? Can you keep females if caught at the right time with the right gear?
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac 2 ай бұрын
Actually, this was a male. It can be very tricky to identify but the under-flap of male king crabs comes to a gentle point whereas a female is wide and round. Males also run larger. For the limited and heavily regulated opportunities for locals to harvest these crabs with approved gear (pots or rings), only males 7" or wider are able to harvested. Females must be released. Thanks and tight lines! Captain Zac

The king crab was also a female so even if it was open and legal it would have to be returned because it’s a female
