Always great videos from you! I Just read thru the SEAK sport fishing regs, couldn't find any seasons listed for king crabs? Was it an emergency order from ADF&G specific to the Juneau area? I'm a bit farther south, with lots to learn, but puzzled about the season comment. Thanks!

I totally do not see the appeal of electric reel fishing If your arms cannot reel the fish in then you do not deserve to catch the fish in my opinion
@CaptainZacКүн бұрын
Electric reels are useful tools for deep drop fishing (400-1500 ft) where traditional gear is impractical or impossible to use. They open up a whole new range of fishing spots.

@@CaptainZac once again fishing to me is landing the fish on my own accord not using electronics. If I can't reel in the fish because it lives too deep in the ocean then I don't deserve to catch that fish in my opinion. What skill does it take to drop something down there and then hit a button? I'm truly not bashing it's just how I view electric reel fishing. Like the fight isn't good You just dropped something down there hit a button and then the fish basically comes up dead 99% of the time because a power drill drills them in at high speeds I honestly don't see the sport aspect to it if it's to get meat for the freezer I totally understand but I don't see how it's sport fishing

Hi Adam thanks for stopping by! As long as you carefully clean the fillets, these pacific cod are actually very tasty. I know a number of people who prefer pacific cod over halibut. Cod makes great fish and chips and I'll often make cod tacos as well. I don't blame you for sticking with sablefish and ling cod since those are both extremely good eating! Tight lines my friend! Net???? Noob
@CaptainZac2 күн бұрын
Halibut of any decent size would rip a net and for these smaller ones I catch and release so I don't mind if they get off. For a larger fish, I would use a gaff or a harpoon but I wouldn't use those on anything I plan to release given the irreversible damage inflicted. Almost nobody here in Alaska uses a net for halibut.

That is so cool. Love the vids Cap Zac. As I mentioned before going up on a cruise to Alaska June 6... first stop around 6/10 Icy Straight point...then Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. From what I am reading, Salmon is all catch abd release (although last year I released all of mine in Ketchikan). But I am also reading there-- there might not be any salmon going up rivers. Will the rivers be empty of salmon in first couple of weeks in June? Other fish that can be caught from shore? Flounder? Rockfish? Im going with my son this time, so hoping to put him on some fish... Thanks for any words of wisdom😊
@CaptainZacКүн бұрын
Hey @knighttenkoa-gamersouthern5236 thanks for the positive comment! Correct the "feeder king" opener in this area is June 15th but you could fish for hatchery kings in the "terminal areas" in Juneau which open up on June 1st. Check out more details here: www.adfg.alaska.gov/sf/FishingReports/index.cfm?ADFG=R1.ReportDetail&area_key=4 You could go up to Lena Cove and cast spinners or spoons from the shore. You are correct there will not be kings in the rivers/streams but you could target dolly varden in the streams or at stream mouths in the salt water. Rockfish are hard to come by from shore and you could catch flounder / sole / small cod from the Auke Bay harbor breakwater (king salmon could be swimming near here as well). Best of luck with the fishing and enjoy the cruise! Tight lines! Captain Zac

Just wondering, why are we not keeping the Flounder?
@CaptainZac3 күн бұрын
Hi Brian thanks for stopping by - these arrowtooth flounder are different than the flounder on the east coast which are very tasty. These flounder are very bony and the meat is soft/mushy. With all of the other great eating fish in this area (halibut, salmon, rockfish, cod, dungeness and king crab), most angler catch and release these arrowtooth flounder. Most often these are caught as bycatch when targeting halibut, hence the disappointment. Thanks and tight lines! Captain Zac
