Monster lens : MTO 1000mm f/10

Hello Friends,
At a camera fair, I stumbled upon this crazy, huge lens, of russian manufacture. The MTO-11CA 1000mm f/10, a lens that is hard to carry and handle but great fun to use, it is not your everyday lens, but it has certainly its uses.

Very Cool. I love mirror lenses. Sigma made a 600mm mirror lens that came in olive drab and I always thought is was the ultimate spy lens. Owning one it's a little disappointing for shooting. I just wish they were sharper and autofocus. I keep hoping some manufacturer will apply modern computer design and coatings and produce a sharp AF mirror lens.

@@TexMex421 I do think Minolta has one, but I'm not 100% sure about that. It would be nice but I don't think no one will ever made one, making a really good coating for the glass, it will be really costly, and to get very good results, surface would need to be aspherical, which is also costly. Let's hope !

I have the 1000mm Nikon mirror lens. I find having the sun hitting the background has an interesting effect on the photograph.

That's a lens I've always wanted to test but have never found one cheap. Actually I've only found one and was too expensive, also a monster I guess.

@@diyextravaganza it’s a very smooth lens to focus. Need a monopod to get steady shots, probably a tripod is better.

Interesting video - thanks a lot. BTW: on the start screen it says "Super Zoom" - I think it's a fixed lens.

@@joerg_koeln you're right, I should have written super "tele lens" or something of the sort. A really fun lens to use, "you take beautiful pictures and you become very strong " if you read forcing on the Russian accent can plausibly sound like an advertisement for the thing 😋

@@diyextravaganza I had a 500mm reflex Nikkor and did not use it much. Focusing was a bit too painful and it was still big. Instead, I have bought a 200-500mm f/5.6 zoom with AF and vibration reduction, but it also works with a 2x tele converter. Ok, the lens cost 3x as much as the lens shown, but it‘s an excellent modern lens with brilliant picture quality.

@@joerg_koeln yes, the price gap is somehow significant and the image quality reflects that. These mirror lenses are really fun to use and were a solution to zooms of the time that were really poor quality.

If the lens has peeling color Do you have any advice? I got an old lens but the black color on the lens barrel was peeling off.

Hi, I've never attempted at repairing that. But the only solution in such cases is to remove the paint and paint anew. Which also implies disassembling the lens to work on parts individually.

I remember this lens being advertised back in the '70's, alongside Zenith cameras. There was a 500mm/f8 too I recall, as you say Russian (USSR) made, M42 mount, so fits Praktica etc Monster of a thing i imagine - no tripod mount?

@@Gwalion yes, there are some threads that do allow mounting onto a tripod, yes, USSR made (forgot the time frame 😅), anyway, quite a fun lens. Had the 500mm f/8 at some point in the past, also a huge lens. They have their adepts as I've managed to sell the 500 and 1000mm with relative ease. Cheers.

Christopher Frost has a review of this lens on KZfaq. You should check it out. But his version is the old Soviet Union one. I have that lens too. It weighs as much as a Soviet tank.

I found it on a camera market and thought it would be fun to use, it is, only drawback is you need big muscles to carry it all day.

@@diyextravaganza it is so heavy you mount the camera to the lens. Its also one that I would never want the tripod to fall with the camera attached or game over for that camera.

It is NOT a zoom, it is a prime Lens !

@@diyextravaganza Yes, I think it will be fun, I have always thought to try some of the 1000mm and 1000+mm reflex Lenses, fx Zeiss Mirotar 1000mm 5.6, Reflex-Nikkor 2000mm 11.0 and Pentax Reflex 2000mm 13.5, those need exteme sturdy tripods

I have the 500mm of the mto and it's pretty good for the price i bought it. I wanted to buy also the 1000mm but i didn't realize it was so big ahahah Btw, may do you have the Nikon 50mm f2 hc (pre ai)? Because this lense should fit in even without ai conversion, but mine doesn't!! 😢

? My 50mm f2 Nikkor-H, pre-Ai without conversion, fits the Nikon FTZII F to Z adapter without an issue. The serial number is 691769. Admittedly the FTZII is Nikon's half-hearted attempt at an adapter. You would think Nikon would be embarrassed by this product.

@@donkenney1000 yes, in fact it should fit also in the modern dslr reflex, because it's different from the other pre ai lenses (the ai conversion is made putting a little sheet of metal for the aperture lever instead of grinding the ring like othere pre ai lenses) but mine doesn't screw in, idk why. Looks like i will have to grind it

I had the 500mm and it is also a monster. I have tried the 50mm f/2 on the FTZ and seems to work. I also use a third party F To Z adapter sometimes and it works too. Maybe is your bayonet deformed? Cheers.

@@mackenzie540 good, butI meant the bayonet of your lens, had that a few months ago on a 300mm f/4 that I bought very cheap, bayonet was bent, manage to make it straight again, but in between, barely noticeable bends made the lens very difficult to mount.
