Lowe's went out of business here in Mexico so I bought mine at a fire sale for about $5. I put it in a North facing window where it gets zero direct sunlight but pretty bright indirect sunlight. It has really gone wild and the roots have grown and stuck to the wall lol. I love it because it's so dramatic.

I got mine as a barely rooted 2 leaf cutting for $10 last year. It now looks like the one you’re showing with absolutely no effort on my part. In fact it’s barely been watered over the winter and I live the Midwest so the winters get very snowy and cold as I’m sure you’re familiar with. I also recently got a black gold sansevieria for free from cvs where it was living hidden in a nook on a back shelf so dried out it was coming out of the pot. It’s now healthy and I got a baby off of it.

I put off buying a monstera at first because I was worried it looked like a very hard to care for plant. But when I finally got one I found it so be pretty easy and it grows like crazy!! I have mine in front of a north facing window and it seems to love it there, seems to always have one or two new leaves popping up. I can’t believe you can get them for $20 where you live! I’m in Alberta Canada and they are hard to find and very expensive. I paid $80 for mine in a 10in pot 😩. Worth it though she’s a beauty and looking at her every morning makes my heart happy. My 2020 plant goal is to get a Thai constellation

I always wanted one of these, since the '70s, but just finally got around to picking up a small one about three years ago. It's not exactly small anymore - they do grow quickly. I kept mine on a shelf in the shower in my bathroom until it became too large to keep there anymore - the advantageous roots went insane and grew everywhere. I have a lot of artificial light in my bath but it's still not bright in there, so this plant can do well even under dimmer conditions, but I have been surprised to see people growing it in locations that get pretty full sun and it doesn't seem to burn. I'm not going to risk it. I've since transplanted it into a much larger pot, which in just six months it's already somewhat grown into. I'm having to keep an eye on how much I'm watering it to avoid overwatering - the pot is deep so the plant should be able to tap into moisture even when the surface dries out. It's in my living room now over 12 feet away from the west window. I try to keep the blinds mostly closed during the day, but I've accidentally left them open a couple of times and it's been blasted by evening sun without seeming to have suffered any consequences, so I'm slowly letting more afternoon light into the room to see if it suffers any negative consequences (my succulents closer to the window would appreciate more direct sun). I'd say this is an excellent plant for beginners. It seems a lot more robust than some other large houseplants - more like a giant pothos than a sometimes finicky ficus.
@sunspot42

I’m letting mine get direct evening sun now, although it’s a good 12 feet from the window here in Northern California. Seems to be thriving with this level of light - no burning.

I only grow them in punk wood with no fertilizer and they love it.

I just brought my girl inside today since it's starting to get cooler in Florida. She grew so well this Spring/Summer in the sun room. Now I don't know what to do with her, because of the size. I'm thinking of rooting a few nose cuttings just to get the size down. Maybe next growing season tie her up or let her grow on a moss pole, because when I got her I didn't realize how big they get. I'm so glad I started with this and not a gigantic Bird of Paradise like my plan was.

Hi, great video as always! You mentioned thrips, and mine has that problem too, do you have any advice? I wipe the leaves on a weekly basis to keep them in check, and I thought of disrupting the insect's lifecycle by covering the soil with clingfilm, but this has been unsuccessful. Right now i have wrapped some tape sticky side out around the stems, hoping the thrips would not be able to reach the leaf this way, fingers crossed
@barbll000
@barbll000 4 жыл бұрын
I had a plant that was completely covered in them (at least I think it was thrips) and being desperate, I sunk the entire plant and soil into a bucket of water and let it sit for about 3 hours. I haven't seen the pests since and do check. I was willing to risk losing the plant with that drastic method because it was so badly infested.

@ 01:40 -- *Scorched Leaves* -- If only the leaf in contact with the window glass was scorched, I think that would eliminate Light Intensity as a cause of the damage. I would guess it more likely that being close to the glass allowed heat to build up between the two close surfaces and boil the moisture in the leaf. I had a M.d. in a large, SE facing window (8 feet high x 8 feet wide) for about 15 years. It got direct sun for at least four hours every day year round without any problem other than when I forgot to water her at times. There are also photos posted in the Planet Philodendron FB page of M.d. planted outdoors in full sun, doing quite well. The thing that no plant likes so much is extreme changes in light intensity. Suddenly stronger light will cause burning, while sudden loss of intensity will cause leaves to drop in a short while because of the change.

My Monstera Deliciosa has changed it's growing pattern by all leaves reaching out from under any other leaf to get to the sun. Lots of new smaller leaves on the bottom that are pale. I read on the internet that plants can go well in a uv protected window but I need confirmation if that is so. Is my skylight now consider producing low light levels? Thank you for your help.

My first adoption was a Monstera deliciosa I purchased at Costco for $29.99. She is growing so beautifully!! My cat knocked a leaf off the plant and I immediately placed the long healthy stem in a bottle with water. It gets light, and though I know it will not grow roots, I don’t want to throw it away. @johnjhill3
@johnjhill3 4 жыл бұрын
Not sure what kind of situation you are describing. Aerial roots never need water or even misting. Once they find soil further growth is as terrestrial roots, meant to soak up water and nutrients. Aerial roots are mostly structural. M.d. can grow in water culture but that is not what they seek naturally. Water roots are different from the normal types and cannot last long if the plant is moved to regular medium.

Is 45° F too cold for it? I want to bring one to my husband's office😊 I need chill tolerant plants😓

It might be a bit chilly for a monstera, but normally they just put up with it, but be careful with the watering in cold rooms. Aspidistra and fatsia japonica are good with cool rooms (not freezing temp though)

Deliciosas are gorgeous, but I settled for the Adansonii as space is at a premium. I think I need a deliciosa, though 🙂

Can you please tell me if there are different types of green monsteras ? We are not sure if all types get the ruffles at top of the stem and grow the huge leaves ? Or, is it just the age of the leaves and they are all same type ? Thanks so much 🥰

This one is new for me. It’s growing like a weed but all the leaves are pointing in different directions and it’s leaning like crazy. Do I prop them all up??

Mine doesn’t grow at all. I don’t know what I do wrong but the only new leaf is not fully opened and the same size since summer. It’s weird, I think it will stay that way forever.

The new leaves on my Monstera are coming in a lime color. Similar to the leaf you are holding. Will these leaves go green? Do you have an idea what may remedy this? Thank you This new leaf got black and gooey in the center and I had to cut it off. I also had a spot on a stem with the same type of black goo. Can anyone help please? Thank you

Hi! I am new at taking care of plants. Recently purchased a monstera but did not noticed there are small spots looking like rusts on some of the leaves. Please help me. What does this mean and how do I deal with this?

19 dollars! What! Well, I guess it'll be that expensive for being large, but people, these things grow like crazy, so even if you get a baby with a leaf or two, you're set! I have two and they push out new leaves all the time. They're in different light areas, too. So, you know, just get a small one that's cheaper (idk if that's a thing in the US) and watch it grow. You can't go wrong with this one.

Hey, great video! I have a monstera and I am pretty troubled to see that Its leaves seem sad and look towards the floor although it gets enough indirect light and the color of the leaves are not brown or yellow. Any advice?
