Montagu: A Picturesque Town in South Africa's Western Cape

Some scenes from an April day in the picturesque town of Montagu in the Little Karoo region of South Africa's Western Cape Province. This is an area known for its vineyards and orchards, as well as for the hot springs that attract visitors to the town.

I was born in this jewel of a place on 15th November 1948 & lived there until early 1950s on the road which 'lead to the famous Kerk'. I have so many fond memories from the regular times when water ran down the sluices outside the front of our homes, for watering the orchards (grape vines, peach & apricot trees) in the 'agter plaas' for that's what our backyards were. Water enough for a youngster to frolic in. Those coal stoves, where mom baked all our treats (bread, raisen bread, koeksusters & so many others) cooked our meals. Let alone the jams / konfyt, fruit preserves & chutneys, which stood on shelves in the pantry, the sun turning those bottles into 'stained glass windows'. The smell of 'moer koffee' filling the home early morning, luring us out of comfy beds & eiderdowns before breakfast was served. The memories remained so ingrained that I travelled back there as a grown up man in 1984 to breathe in that Montagu air & stir the fond memories. And I almost never left. Maybe I'll have my ashes spread over those beautiful mountains which drew various hues from blue, purple to green, sunkist gold as the morning progressed into dusk. There is no more beautiful place on God's earth ❤😢😊

@@DonaldRallisThanks for your affirmation in response. You can see how the memories still flood my soul. I often wondered why my Dad moved us away from Montagu, but in later years I discovered that his stint in WW2 had not been all 'guts & glory' as shown in the movies & gave him itchy feet & some restlessness, which only calmed down in later years but never left him entirely.

Very nice immersive video. Went through there a few months ago just to refuel and have lunch while heading north. On a route 62 trip on bike 2 yrs ago we stayed only 1 night but I definitively need to spend a few nights there.

Thank you so much for sharing this video I lived and grew up in this town from 1994 to 2005 this town is my childhood and miss it every day of my life seeing this video brings back so many old memories. now living abroad haven't been back to South Africa in 16 years this is the only place on earth I was ever happy. thank you for sharing
