Came across your channel about a month ago and I love seeing Kylie do so much of what other kids her age don’t really do. I have an almost 2 year old and we are slowly trying to implement more Montessori ways into her life. I’m also reading positive discipline after your recommendation! Thanks for the inspiration! Has Kylie ever not wanted to do any of these things, like scrape her plate or clean up after herself? What do you do?
@HapaFamily

Thanks so much for watching! To answer your question - of course there are times when she does not want to be cooperative, she’s a toddler just like any other out there. But I would say she’s willing and happy to do these things 90% of the time because she chooses to do them when invited, if she ever says no or otherwise expresses a desire to NOT participate, then I simply do it myself (good modeling is always so important) and say something matter-of-fact like, “Okay, maybe next time.” Like I said, it’s always an INVITATION to take part in our family’s activities, not a staunch expectation. And when it doesn’t feel forced, she’s typically more inclined to happily join in on what is being done (eg scraping plates after a meal). She loves feeling not only like she can do these things for herself, but also that she’s a valued, contributing member of our family. 😊

@@culiculicin She's been doing many of these things since she could walk, which was about 11 months old. Some of them are obviously a little more complex, like scraping her plate, so that was more recently learned skill. But at 18 months old, your son can certainly start participating in most of the activities you saw her doing in this video! :)

We have taken a year to add some of these set ups into our home as we could afford it! also, working on handmaking a lot of the small work items like blocks and fabric books. I scavenged second hand stores for the baskets to put the works/ toys in separately. overall it's been rather inexpensive for the set up. gathering the specific toys tho of course can be pricey, but always look second hand I was so surprised to find most of it there in decent condition!

I am a retired teacher and I can tell you that it is not necessary to buy expensive learning toys. Use things you have around the house, such as, measuring spoons and cups, wooden clothes pins, plastic bowls and cups, etc. Many of these things can be used to create your Montessori-like materials. Best wishes for your little one.

One of the primary reasons I want to implement Montessori practices is because of how well it helps to establish independence and self-confidence in children. I absolutely love seeing how much self-efficacy she has in practical life skills and her daily routine. It breaks my heart when I see parents struggling with their kiddos over conflicts like getting dressed when they could instead help their little ones gain confidence in their abilities to dress themselves. ♡

I'm amazed by just how much she can do independently! I feel so much guilt now for not letting my LO do more on her own. It just makes sense considering they have a natural desire to do things on their own. Too many of us without even knowing take away their independence and then blame our children when they grow up for being 'lazy' and 'entitled'. The fact is we never taught them to be independent in the first place, we taught them how to depend on us and indirectly, other people.

Been raising my 2 year old this way and didnt know it had a name. Anyways, I love that my daughter is independent, she even likes doing bath time alone,( I use a video baby monitor two watch over her, and 30 min later help her shampoo and wash). I am always following my child's lead and sometimes get frowned upon by my parents because to them I am just doing whatever she wants.

I would like you to take a minute to appreciate what it is that you are doing for your children and for your family as you adopt this way of raising your children. From the perspective of someone, some 20 years into your future...everything you are doing is impacting the adults that they will become...and your girls will be amazing women :)

Awesome video! Have the video script last a bit longer please. I always want a smoothie after watching you guys have one. How do you guys make your smoothies? Video idea you could have Kylie doing a cooking video. Have her tell us how she makes something. That would be so cute!

Hi Jessalee! Thanks for watching! We just mix frozen fruit and veggies (typically spinach and/or baby carrots) together with milk and/or water in the NutriBullet, just like I showed in the video. Sometimes we’ll do a chocolate, peanut butter, and banana variation instead (also with spinach). 😊

I am so curious about mia's sleep space! Is that just a crib mattress on the floor? Why? I want to know more!
@KyrieFortune

In another video Ashley explained it's just a firm twin size mattress, so she can climb on and off at leisure and explore her room, learning movement indipendence at a very early age, while also having a designated space for sleeping

I'm not a parent but I have watched some videos recently about Japanese daycare and primary school. This method of parenting really reminds me of that. Your toddler is so responsible.

Watching Kylie come down the stairs and essentially prepared her own breakfast blew my mind! I'm 27 years old and my fiancé and I talk a lot about how we want to raise our children with Montessori principals. I'm new to your channel and you're my new inspiration!!! I can't wait to keep watching your videos!

My son is the same age as Kylie, but he does nothing like her, even if I encourage or invite him. More often than not, his answer is NO. Any tips on how to change his mind?

MM M-M in case she doesnt answer, i have some Suggestions based on what ive seen in her videos. Maybe dont use the word no towards him? And when he says no, ask why he told you no. Then explain that you dont say no to him- so why would he say no to you. Or just say okay. And make the activity look really fun. And invite again. Ans tell him that he is allowed to change his mind and its okay if he decides to want to do it. Or say like “i will help you if you want help” “are you saying no because you dont know how? Thats okay, i can show you and then you will know how” 🤷🏻‍♀️
@HapaFamily
@HapaFamily 4 жыл бұрын
You can certainly try some of Amber’s tips! But know that he simply may not be interested in the tasks you’re trying to get him to do, and that’s okay. All kids are different. That should be respected, especially in a Montessori environment. Or... maybe he’s just not ready for them, developmentally speaking. And if he’s had a lot of experience with failing at something and feeling frustrated in the past, you might consider breaking a task down for him into smaller, more manageable chunks that he can definitely feel successful at. :) Sometimes, I will just go about doing the activity myself and (as Amber mentioned), make it look super appealing and fun, then she perks up and wants to have a go at it herself! 😊

The fact that the baby carrier wasn't ergo only proves that nobody is perfect. Otherwise this video was pure mastery of raising children. I am stunned of the smoothness of your day. My child protests so often (brushing her teeth, going to bed etc.). I don't understand how you achieve that. Thumbs up!

Absolutely love the approach of letting them learn to do these things themselves. It makes so much sense rather than doing everything for them then one day saying "you're old enough to do that yourself now!" Toddlers seem to have an instinctual desire for independence, strike whilst the iron's hot springs to mind (not literally). Currently researching about 4 years ahead of planning for a baby (22 years old currently) but I'm glad I did, I've found so many things that me and my husband want to implement in parenting. It's nice to be able to take time to rethink parenting approaches rather than falling into the standard techniques which we don't necessarily agree with. Thank you so much for your videos. I hope we can be as patient in parenting as you are.

So, Kylie is clearly not a brussels sprout fan, which kinda cracked me up. What is your policy on eating? Clearly you're not into the whole 'clean plate club' mindset... which is good because that can be super damaging... but do you require that they try everything on their plate? A couple bites of each thing? Or is it totally up to them? (And by "them" I guess I mostly mean Kylie since Mia isn't really eating regular food yet)
@HapaFamily
@HapaFamily 4 жыл бұрын
I’m a super picky eater myself, so I don’t feel like I can be so strict about it because I can’t even model it... 😬🙈 I hated as a kid that no one ever simply respected my likes/dislikes (which have greatly evolved into adulthood anyway)... so I’ve always had the mindset that I wanted to encourage good eating habits, but not dictate and make it a battle. I try my best to provide her with healthy options... and although I will typically try to include one food item at each meal that I know for sure she will eat, I otherwise refuse to cook her a “special meal”. I’m not a short-order cook, and my philosophy is that everyone in the family eats the same thing when we sit down together for dinner. I do encourage her to try everything on her plate, and if she doesn’t like it, that’s fine. Ultimately, she decides how much she’s eating and which of her foods to eat that I’ve offered. Sometimes we’ll have a small dessert if she ate a majority or all of her dinner, but there are otherwise no extra snacks (after dinner, which is primarily the only time she’ll refuse certain foods - breakfast and lunch are much easier). If she goes to bed a little hungry, then that’s the natural consequence. There’s always breakfast in the morning, and she won’t starve. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’d like to think I take a pretty natural, no-gimmicks approach to eating. And, for the most part, it avoids many of the battles that other parents sometimes experience.

When do find time to clean and cook?
@HapaFamily
@HapaFamily 4 жыл бұрын
As you may have seen in the video, we clean and cook together. And for the few (rare) times when Kylie does not want to be involved, she plays independently nearby while I do these things. The baby is either with me, sleeping, or also playing independently on the floor nearby.
