You’re always so encouraging and helpful! I feel like I’ve fell off the “Montessori/gentle bandwagon every since your vlogs have stopped and I’m not consistently watching how you’re modeling and interacting with the kids. These videos are so so helpful and I’m so grateful for all the content you’re always putting out for us!!!

Yes!!! Those videos really helped me too to remind myself of the gentle parenting approach. And even though I understand why Ashley stopped the vlogs and has no responsibility what so ever to continue them, I miss them because it was inspiring to watch

I really miss the vlogs too! Whenever things were feeling tough, I would re-watch old vlogs and it would make me feel better and that I could do it. I'm part of all Ashley's resources, but the vlogs helped in a different way lol

This may not be “Montessori” but my mom taught me to be very tidy. We’d eat together and then when the meal is done she’d say “okay let’s go put our dishes away!” And it easily becomes habit that before playing or doing something else we just quickly clean up.
@MariaandMontessori

Finding a part of the cleanup process that is FUN to that particular child can also help! Stella LOVES the dishwasher, so even if she's not keen on some other kitchen clean up tasks, once the dishwasher is open, it's go time! And just like adults, I think it's OK to separate out favorite from less favorite tasks. She likes the dishwasher, I like to organize the leftovers in the fridge, and dad likes to handwash the pots and pans. So as she grows, maybe our cleanup routine as a family will be as such-it was the case in my home growing up! We all do different roles sometimes, but we clean together!

One thing ive found helpful is whenever he asks for a new snack I tell him i can get him the new snack when his old plate is in the sink. He usually moves quick then. And over time he has started to do so more often on his own. I treat it like a natural consequence. Like, oh look there isnt enough room yet for a new plate

"I know you can do it" has been really helpful in encouraging care of self tasks that I know she is truly capable of doing but immediately jumps to "help me/you do it" with. Sometimes I will just put the sock on her big toe and say "I know you can do the rest, I've seen you do it!" and that's often enough "hand holdig" and a quick moment to connect and be silly while also still encouraging her to keep going!

Ok but it's almost freaky that this video arrives today, just as my partner and I were trying to figure out why on earth our kid was behaving the same way as the child described in the letter. I absolutely love this new format, I feel validated and the solutions you're listing are certainly giving me hope! Thank you and keep up the excellent work :) Cheers!

I love when you suggest possible sentences as "I'd like you to try" or "ops, seems like forgot to do this" "hey, why don't you try doing that instead", I'm afraid of sounding bossy or too authoritative with my baby girl, so I'd love to practice more positive expressions before she's here. Could you suggest more? Also: could you make a video, or suggest some, about how to properly use our voice, so that it sounds assertive but encouraging and positive at the same time? Bye 😉

Ashley, I want to thank you for all of your guidance. I have used your Montessori video series as my #1 resource since I was pregnant with my daughter who is now 3. Question. A while ago I watched one of your videos and you spoke about child friendly TV shows. I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the video! I would love to reference it again since my daughters preferences have changed and I can tell she would benefit from something new. Thank you in advance!

Thank you so much for the video 🙏 I have a small practical tip I've learnt through navigating similarly challenging morning routines that I'd like to share - make sure your kid isn't hungry! So either a small pre-breakfast snack (piece of fruit etc) or do breakfast first. If I don't do this my son has massive hangry meltdowns!
@monikarolf1426
@monikarolf1426 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing! It seems obvious that a hungry child will not cooperate but still we easily forget about such simple things. We always have similar challenges when our daughter is still tired. Getting up even earlier in the morning to allow for more time would make the situation worse. So we need to make sure she goes to bed really early and hope she sleeps well through the night. Before trying a lot of tips and tricks, I would really recommend to everybody to check if basic needs are covered: Is the child hungry, tired, freezing etc. or is there a need to cuddle or move before starting routines.

As an aupair I realized that my automatic behavior towards cleaning was really negative, perhaps due to something I learnt. It was really hard for me to find a way to teach tidying up and cleaning in a gentle manner. I could be gentle for everything else and then struggle to engage the child in these activities. It's scaring me now that I am planning for a baby, I don't want to repeat this pattern.

I have two children that are autistic and they are (usually) always willing to help. Now with two children that are autistic ( one child is 3.5 and the other child is 13) I’ve watched them have the same responses as the child being explained in the video. I will say it’s not that the children were expecting me to do their job but more so they need direction. I say simple phrases such as “what should we do after we eat?” Or did you forget to do something when you were finished with your activities/meal?” etc because I want them to be able to think about what might need to be done rather than me telling them what it is they should do. Now with my 13 year old child from me doing this throughout the years she only needs me to remind her to do clean up once in awhile, it did take time but I knew it may take more time with her. Our 3.5 year old I started the Montessori approach very young (6 months) and he has always been willing to clean the house with me, as well as his own messes. That does not mean I never have to remind him to clean up or to help me clean up the mess because at times it happens. We need to remember we are the adults teaching our children how to take care of themselves, what they are taught and we are the prime example. Sometimes it just takes a bit more effort on our part to get the children where they need to be. We need to get creative as stated in the “Montessori toddler” book. Once I read that, my creativity in helping my child has grown.

Thank you for this. These are my struggles exactly, with my 3-year-old. I will have to look into routine cards and try that and all of these other suggestions. It's hard when I work in the evenings and my husband is intent on doing dinner time and bedtime his own way. Maybe routine cards could get us all on the same page as a family.

Cool. I did basically what you suggested here, doing the task with the child if it does not do it on its own, regarding his coat and shoes which I consider to be his task to put in their place after coming home. Works MUCH better than telling him off for throwing the shoes around, which I did before and then decided that I do not want to raise my voice regarding the same topic every day. :)

Also, consider what happens after getting dressed. Try to add something that makes getting dressed promptly worth it. If the the next thing after getting dressed is being buckled into the car seat and heading to daycare, then the child may be drawing out the process to postpone this. Perhaps add in a short story time once he dressed.

I have a question, how do you respond (in a Montessori way) to children that try and take on tasks that are way too hard for them, but not dangerous in any way? Do you let them do their thing and realise it is too hard on their own? Do you jump in and assist before they get frustrated breaking their concentration? Or do you redirect them to an easier task/version of the task? I see a lot of toddlers and preschoolers not only taking interest in the chores I do, but also in the hobbies I do around the house, but things like working on a 1000 - 2000 piece puzzle or a lot of the crafts I am doing are although not dangerous, still very hard for them and not easy to split up in easy, attainable tasks (like you can do with some chores). How do you approach situations like these?

Thank you for this well thought out response! I have a floor bed question: my baby will crawl soon but he is used to going to sleep in pitch black. When he is able to crawl out of his floor bed and access his room someday, should I offer a night light? How else would he see to get around? I have a hatch- maybe I’d program it to turn on at a certain time in the morning? Otherwise, would you recommend continuing to keep the sleep environment pitch black like he is used to? Anyone can please offer thoughts.

Hi Ashley, this is great! My boy just turned 4 and we often have the same struggles. May I ask a follow up question? What do you do when the child says no and refuses to bring his plate (to stick with the case in the video), even when we’re doing it together? My boy will just wriggle himself out and run away. This is more often the case than not. How would you deal with refusing to cooperate on a daily basis?

Hi Ashley! Thank you for this video, I love all of your advice. I have a question on this topic: my son is almost 16 months old and helps to bring his plate/bowl to the table. I still assist with lifting it on the table as it is a bit high for him. When it comes to taking his plate/bowl to the kitchen he just runs away to play, no interest. What are your thoughts on this..? Is he a little young to start really implementing his help with cleaning up after himself? Thank you for your time 😊 Taylia

I have three children one son and two daughters, my girls were always eager to do everything on their own and didn't want help with anything even from an early age, my son, who is the oldest would still let me dress him if I would, he never was motivated, by anything, to do things for himself, still isn't no matter what I've tried and I've tried alot of different ways of doing things even asking him how he would prefer to do them and nothing, just does not care about all the cute cards or baskets that the girl always got excited about, just not his thing lol

the first advice didnt work for me either my daughter would just leave the plate on the table and throw it on the floor when the next meal came. I started picking up after her and repeating out loud nicely as i walk away the plate goes on the kitchen sink. I kept doing this and now she wants to beat me to it and gets upset if i pick up the plate.

This is the same exact problem with my 3.5 yo, he is capable of doing it all by himself, he used to do it when he first learned but now when we go to school, he keeps asking me to do it. And as you said, tell him, i would like you to try, then he keep saying, No, you do it, and then started screaming and crying. Because I run out of time and we get late, I do it at the end. Also I am 30 minutes away from school and since I work at the same school, we already get up early as I have to be one hour before the children starts school and they go one hour before other children. Please advice what to do? And he does everything by himself at his Montessori school.

Honestly i think it would benefit the child to have any experience with a Montessori approach to communication guidence with respect and a chance to develop skills they might not be given otherwise. Who k ows how valuable those few moments you get with the child will be for them. It does seem like you could discuss it with the parents if it does conflate with the approach they want you to take instead but if they see it being implemented they might really like it.
