This is a great example of the importance of self-correcting activities! Even though she thought she tried all the combinations of key & lock, she knew the answer would be there and kept at it rather than being discouraged. Also, Kylie’s eyebrow raises are everything 😆 It seems like the hardest part of observing will be to not smile or giggle if they’re as vocal as Kylie! She’s too much of a sunshine 😊

Good points about slowing down our movements and not saying so much that the child must focus on our words or mouth or facial expressions. One time someone told me they didn't understand why their kids didn't know how to wash their hands properly from watching them at the wash basin. I noted to them that when the children were toddlers their heads were below the level of the sink, so they could not see the hand-washing process. All they knew was they could see you turn the spigot for water to come out. My mother taught us on stools how to start the water and check the temperature and wet our hands and soap our hands and rinse the soap before replacing it and clean/rinse our hands then turn the water off. There's a whole process so you get clean, don't burn yourself, and leave clean soap for the next user. They had not considered that the child hadn't seen above the level of the sink. I did so love when Kylie noted that the lock's shackle looks like a faucet when turned away from the padlock body. I just love her visual, mental creativity, imagination. If she thinks keys are too easy, you could test her skills with sensitive fingers on safecracking. LOL. She's right, they do also look like little purses or suitcases. This is so good to remind Americans to slow down, take it easy.

when I watch your videos, something I am always struck by is Kylie's language skills! Her sentences are so complex, and she has a large vocabulary (faucet) ...I wonder if this is from reading to her or just how much you and your husband talk to/with her?

@@yashodamendiratta4034 you're talking about "parentese" which is the way we talk to our babies in high voices. That's fine, and gets their attention. "Baby talk" is using incorrect language and talking down to children, which does not foster language development. For example, baby is trying to say water, but can only say "wawa". "Baby talk" would look like you now referring to water as wawa. "Oh do you want your wawa? Here let me get you your wawa". It's water.

I recently started working at a non-Montessori preschool and it's showing me just how much I love this approach to presenting an activity to the children. At work yesterday, my boss presented a new activity to the children (tracing shapes while on their bellies instead of sitting at the table). Her approach of talking constantly was actually somewhat intimidating to me. I have pretty bad social anxiety and avoidant personality disorder, so the concept of talking less and sitting back and observing actually works better for me.

Ashley! How do you ALWAYS know what I need! This video is exactly what I needed right now! I discovered your channel a couple months ago and have been working to implement Montessori into our home and lifestyle. It's been a CRAZY ride to say the least! But it's been worth it! I've been going through your Montessori at home playlist and also started the book The Montessori toddler. I just have to say I've been a little stressed lately! My oldest is almost 3 and I feel like somehow I need to "catch him up" since I've just recently learned about Montessori. I know this seems silly but it's how I feel. I understand I need to follow the child and I do my best to do that. I previously left a comment about trying an activity with him that I felt like he should have mastered already but he hasn't and isn't interested in trying and I think to myself "well if I had tried this sooner would he have it mastered already?" It makes me feel like I'm failing him. 😞 I also have an 8 month old so she is fully Montessori-fied. Lol Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Sorry this was such a long comment! 😜

I get how you feel... My son is 2 and a half... He doesn't eat by himself (he barely cares about food): would this had happened if I had tried to do BLW? He doesn't get dressed by himself: maybe I didn't motivate him enough when he was little. He doesn't want to use scissors ✂: what am I doing wrong? I thought he was ready to have full access to art materials: he just ate a crayon 🖍 today... We are tempted to compare our kids all day, mainly because social media bombarding us with picture perfect kids... It cost me a lot of effort to focus on what he likes to do and stop thinking about what I would like him to be doing...

Hello! Early childhood educator here! Thanks so much for all your amazingly helpful videos! Just wondering how Montessori accommodates the “initial investigation” that many early science educators advocate. It’s the idea that children should have an uninfluenced first engagement with materials, especially natural ones before a “presentation” or opening words are shared by a teacher.

This is amazing. I'm coming to the Montessori approach late (my son is going to be 2.5 in Sept.) Do you have a shopping list persay of activities you would recommend for a child his age that are developmentally appropriate and should this new approach to activities, structure, etc be done all at once or would it be too jarring and should things be introduced more slowly? Can you be hired for individual facetime consults? Love your channel - thank you.

Hi really appreciate all your videos and how simply and clearly you present in each video. I’m a very frustrated mum, each time I present new toys to my child, if with any difficulties, he would immediately give up. Like Kylie was presented with locks and she tried to open them, if that happened to my boy, after one or two trying he would stop, and try to talk irrelevant things to avoid it. For anything basically, once he feels he couldn’t do it a little bit, he just would not do it. I don’t know how to do with this, and everyday so frustrated. Please can you help me? Thank you very much!! xx

Have you considered turning it into a game? In the lead up, you could talk about how you and he are going to *walk* to the end of the street, so you can see if your neighbour's garden is blooming, or if he can spot the neighbour's cat or dog and wave to it etc. When the time comes for the walk, you could chat about the "game", and ask him if he thinks the cat or dog would be asleep, or if the flower you saw yesterday was still in bloom. Hopefully that gives him something to focus on, and he will walk down the driveway with nothing but the "game" on his mind?

Have you considered incorporating cleaning up/ tidying up into your daily routine? You could model what is expected, describe what you are doing, invite their participation by asking for their help, and give hand-over-hand assistance where required. It's about setting expectations that activity time is followed by clean up/ tidy up time, and carrying through consistently.

I absolutely love this! However I have some questions due to having my littles at different ages and abilities (obviously lol). My kids are pretty much the same age as yours; my son will be 3 next week and my daughter is 16 months. My son would LOVE something like this and having a tray of matching cards or bean transfers and what not. However I feel like I can't have these things out for him to choose to play with on their shelves because my 16 m.o. can't play with things like these. How do you go about this?? How do you focus on Montessori with your tiny one and your older one individually or at the same time?? My 16 m.o. sometimes only takes one nap a day and I feel like I need to out things away when she's up and it hinders his ability to get more "work" done. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!

Hi Ashley, i just wanted to ask if you had any tips for someone who lives in an extended family home. I have a really busy schedule and busy house. I struggle to give my full attention to my child and cannot implement Montessori around the whole house. I am planning on home schooling my 6 month old daughter and am trying to use Montessori and am struggling with other influences in the home and other ways of parenting around the house...
@MC-ko2mx
@MC-ko2mx 3 жыл бұрын
Ashley briefly covered this in her Q & A (from 3.00 onwards). Her response was more geared towards grandparents/ caregivers who were not living with the child though. Is your extended family aware that you intend to adopt the Montessori approach? Are you comfortable discussing this with them, and sharing resources (like Ashley's videos), so they are aware of what you're trying to do?
@sr3193
@sr3193 3 жыл бұрын
M C they are aware of how I want to raise my child however they themselves do not use that approach. And although they won’t go against my wishes, they are raising their children differently and the atmosphere is not very ‘Montessori’. As I am only 20 everyone likes to play the ‘you’re young’ card. And I know the different parenting approaches around me will affect mine when my child is older and can be influenced by them. Also because the house is so busy and I cannot stick to a specific routine as anyone else’s routine or day can affect mine and my routine, it’s difficult to plan activities etc. And in a big family when people are eating at different times and have different approaches to eating for example, it’s difficult to assert my own way when I’m so busy. I was hoping that Ashley would have some advice for someone who cannot have an established and steady routine but wants to implement Montessori.

I can somewhat understand what you’re going through because my husband and extender family don’t 100% follow the Montessori way. I’ve learned that you have to lead by example when it comes to showing people how you want to parent. Hopefully they see you sticking to it and see how it works for you and then follow suit. Also when it comes to my extended family I take opportunities to explain my way of doing things as they come up. For example my sister did something I wouldn’t agree with (nothing serious, just not my style), I took that opportunity to say “hey I’m doing things this way now because ____”. She agreed and now has a better understanding of my philosophy as a parent. I really hope this helps! As the baby of the family with a baby I totally understand the whole “you’re too young to understand” thing but leading by example really helps. Eventually they’ll see she’s young but she knows what she’s talking about and she did her research.

I'd love at some point in the series if you could address learning multiple languages! Whether the parents are multilingual or not. Our personal situation is that I'm bilingual but my husband's not and he's willing to learn but doesn't have the bandwidth to become fluent. I don't want to leave my husband out of conversations if I try to teach my son French, plus I'm not sure on best timing/method so that my son doesn't get too confused while learning two languages. Anyway, would love any insight you have from a Montessori perspective 😊

Does it take directed practice for the child to learn to wait and watch while you show the activity? Or is it that the child isn't ready for this if she just wants to jump in and do all the time? Like grabbing out of your hands and wanting to rather explore by herself first?

I think I would have a hard time not engaging with her thought about the water faucet. What was your line of thinking for staying quiet while she was exploring that idea? I wonder if there's anything I could say in such a moment that would not interrupt her but that would let her explore that thought for a moment before returning to the task. Or, would you say it's very important to not engage with that sort of tangential thinking?
@HapaFamily
@HapaFamily 3 жыл бұрын
When she first said it, I think you can hear me acknowledging what she said in the background: “Yes, it looks like a kitchen faucet.” But I know how she is when she begins to talk about things in that way, and I knew that if I were to have continued the conversation about the faucets, her focus on the task would have been completely diverted. So I chose to just let her say what she wanted to say about it, but not otherwise engage beyond an initial acknowledgment. 😉 And as I suspected, after a minute or so, she was able to redirect herself back to the task. We have lots of conversations like that throughout the day, so I didn’t feel that she would’ve been missing anything otherwise! ☺️

I guess it's no different to when Kylie went slightly off-tangent at 16.08, and started referring to the lock as a "faucet" or "water spout". I noticed that Ashley briefly acknowledged it, then paused, and waited for Kylie to resume with the key-and-lock activity. I wonder if this would work for you? If it doesn't, perhaps you could gently prompt your child, by demonstrating what you'd like them to do (eg: fitting a peg into the pegboard)?

Perhaps you could incorporate cleaning up into your daily routine? Obviously you would be doing the majority of the cleaning/ tidying, as she's only 10 months old. But you could definitely model what is expected, describe what you are doing, ask her to help (by handing you items), and give her hand-over-hand assistance when appropriate. Hopefully this sets the expectation that activity time is followed by clean-up time, and she can do more as she gets older.

When it comes to “bad” behavior such as throwing things/making a mess, I understand there’s the need for experimentation “look what happens when I throw the water!” but i really want to know if children do also have this weird need for malice? Like, mom says I can’t throw the water, (and even if you don’t show anger) it’s funny that it’s bad? I get that it can be easy for kids to enjoy making parents mad when their reaction is funny, but if a parent like 100% doesn’t show any funny reaction at all and just says well let’s clean it up, does that almost always deter children away from behaviours like that after they get the experimentation out of the way?

I'm not Ashley of course, but i just wanted to give my two cents, if I may. If a parent/caregiver shows no reaction and is matter a fact about the limit that is set, then the child is less likely to keep using the materials in an unintended way. However, throwing the water/beans/whatever is all very developmentally appropriate in toddlers and even if they know they shouldn't and the parent isn't showing a reaction, those things can still occur for some time because they have almost zero impulse control as a toddler. It's important just to set the limit (the kinetic sand stays on the table or whatever) and then a reminder (the kinetic sand must stay on the table or we will have to put it away) and then follow through if/when the child throws the sand (I see you're having a hard time keeping the kinetic sand on the table, let's clean this up and try again another day), and then put it away. If you remain consistent, the child will learn much more quickly. Hope that helps a bit :)

Have you tried presenting the rice and cups inside a container? Hopefully the container will act as a physical and visual "boundary", so your daughter will be more inclined to keep the rice "within the lines". Obviously if you've demonstrated dry pouring inside the container, given her verbal reminders that rice is for pouring not throwing, and removed the activity if she persisted, then maybe like Ashley said, your child may not be ready yet.
