Saint Stalin As a visiting Englishman, Richard Cromwell was once invited to dine with Armand de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, who was unaware of who he was. At dinner, the prince questioned Richard Cromwell about affairs in England and observed, "Well, that Oliver, tho' he was a traitor and a villain, was a brave man, had great parts, great courage, and was worthy to command; but that Richard, that coxcomb and poltroon, was surely the basest fellow alive; what is become of that fool?" Richard Cromwell replied, "He was betrayed by those he most trusted, and who had been most obliged by his father".

I LOVE Monty Python...but don't get your history from them! Cromwell was a complicated man but loved music and wine and song. He banned Christmas but allowed the Jewish people to return to England. His legacy is tarnished by some actions but was a living man who should not be reduced to parody, although this is a great one.

For clarification on the Puritan position (myself being one), it is that musical instruments are a violation of the Regulative Principle of Worship. Meaning, the issue that Puritan Christians have is not music in general but musical instruments specifically in the worship of God. Most certainly not music in general for we are called to sing the Psalms, and surely Cromwell did this as a good Congregationalist Puritan. Hope that clarifies things :)
