what's with the creepy look the "cardinal" gave him when he said "be easy, this is my first time"

It could be that as a member of the church he feels compelled to show sympathy towards those who need support. Or "It's my first, please be gentle with me" reminded him of that little choir boy he deflowered once.

I always thought that was Terry Jones trying not to crack up at Michael Palin's delivery there. Palin was very good at breaking the others up (particularly John Cleese.)

What does that phrase mean???
@bl13985 ай бұрын
@@Juniusit’s mocking a common thing people say when criticizing the quality of tv shows - complaining about the BBC wanting to increase the TV license fee despite the quality going down. By mocking it here they’re also mocking themselves as the character is criticizing the quality of the last sketch.

Dude, this sketch is one of my favorites, its got the best jokes - This firm last year made a complete profit of a shilling. - A shilling, Wilkins? - Uh roughly yes sir. - Wilnkins, I'm the Chairman of a multi million pound corporation and you are a very new chartered accountant. Isn't it possible that theres been some mistake? - Well, that's very kind of you sir, but I don't think I'm ready to be chairman yet. - Wilkins, this shilling, is it net or gross? - It's British sir. Cracks me up

A shilling was a unit in the pre-decimalised UK currency, worth 12pence; there were 20 of them in a British Pound. In Feb 1971 the currency in Britain was decimalised, and a shilling became worth 5 New Pence (staying being worth 1/20 of a Pound). I'll let you do the maths on working out the US equivalences :-) Hope that helps
@computernerd11016 жыл бұрын
duncanparsons, thanks for explaining the numbers, but I'm still confused about the operations. If you tell me to add, subtract, multiply, divide, or some combination thereof, I can do it. But the "of a further" part still sounds cryptic to me, even if I know it's "a shilling of a further half shilling."

I miss our old currency😢
@anonUK4 ай бұрын
At the time, a pound was worth a fixed $2.40 (down from $4.20 up to 1947, to $2.80 up to 1967 and then $2.40 up to the end of Bretton Woods when both pound and dollar free floated). So in 1969, a penny was a cent and a shilling $0.12. Decimalisation happened very close to the end of Bretton Woods, at which point the pound declined to $2.00, making a new penny $0.02. While the shilling coins were still used as 5p, they were no longer a currency unit. I The pound bumped between $1.50 - $2.00 for about 45 years, apart from at one point in 1985 when it sank to about $1.25 and then revived again. It went back to $1.25 after Brexit and now sits at $1.35 or so.

I think in the UK, a bishop in the C of E can invest in a company, sit on the board and come to shareholders' meetings, and it's not a big deal, unlike in the US where people would give someone that high in a church organization a bit of the side-eye for doing the same. So Terry J's character isn't out of place, and it's another "ironic" joke how he ends up.

@Wuayker license fees are taxes that people pay for their govermental TV and other services (ie the BBC in england). same way we pay in the USA if we want HBO or Cinemax on your cable or satellite service, they have to pay por the local TV. the private TV networks there dont do this because they air commercials like we do instead.

@westtxtapper5 жыл бұрын
Before 1971, British money was divided into pounds, shillings and pence (pence is simply plural for penny). It was 12 pence (or pennies) to the shilling, 20 shillings to the pound and 240 pence to the pound. That was all changed in 1971 to a straight 100 pence to the pound and the shilling was discontinued.
