After a season of owning our Moomba Max I decided to revisit footage from last year as I demoed a 2018 Moomba Max and a 2017 Axis A22. I wanted to share my thoughts of both of these boats compared to each other. Other people may have differing opinions and that's fine too. I think both boats make great entry level or "budget" wake boats. The Moomba Max ultimately was the better fit for us and our needs.
Edit - one thing I forgot to mention in the video. At around 2:43 you see the engine hatch open on the Axis A22. I am sure I'm not alone in saying that while the massive deep engine hatch on the Max is awesome...it's also a major PITA to use if you want to check your oil or inspect you engine. There has GOT to be a better way to retain such a deep, nice wet storage compartment but also allow for easy access to the engine. Hopefully Skiers Choice resolves this issue in the next few years. I'll give a point to Axis for engine / check oil access even though their storage is like a 1/16 of the Max

Looked at a 2019 Axis T22 last year. Ended up going with a 2017 Moomba Mojo. Love this boat. What wrecked the purchase of the Axis for us was the wife hated the idea of having to stick her hand thru the swim platform to engage the manual wedge. Liked the boat other than that. Everything wake related was adjustable from the helm. Great vid. Sweet home Alabama/ Guntersville.

@@haknslash Love Guntersville. I grew up in Albertville and gave the lake nothing. I met my wife in mid 90's and her parents owned an access lot with a boathouse. Dated and married and it was on. She talked me into buying a boat when we dated. We've had runabouts and cruisers every since. We bought a Moomba Mojo from Skiers Marine last year for my 16 yr old (and us) to play on. Money very well spent. Guntersville Lake is a big place. Lot's of room. Only complaint is that some of the best waterplay areas of the lake are inaccessible due to bridges. Great place otherwise.

Great review man. We're on our way to look at a Max today actually, so this was very informative. Any updates on having to add more ballast to make a better wave?
@haknslash
@haknslash 3 жыл бұрын
The newer Max come with more ballast than mine did so they are much better setup to make a good wave stock. Unless you have a large crew you may want to still add a few hundred lbs of lead gas but there’s tons of storage so you won’t lose anything by adding it. I have a lot of videos on my channel with the upgraded bags and it’s for sure worth it for me. Wave was night and day better. Of course this may be less of a difference now since the Max comes with more additional ballast. Hope y’all have a good time checking out the Max. We love ours and can’t wait for winter to be over with! Glad you enjoyed the vid and check out more on my channel for other Max vids. 👍

Great vid Hack. I agree, most of these boats put out a great wave, if tuned correctly. I was impressed how good a wave the Axis put out with stock ballast. One thing I struggled with my '15 Mojo was finding the right amount of ballast. Out of the box it was unsurfable, Now, 4000 lbs ballast later, it puts out a great wave. I guess the surf gate system is likely a more efficient system than surf tabs for creating wake. That being said, I much prefer the fit and finish on my Moomba over the Axis, for this price range boat. BTW, are you the same Hacknslash as in the Moomba forum?. I am a member there and post regularly. Also, how great to see the smile on the kiddo's faces at the end. I have 2 kids and we have created so many great memories in our boat. If anyone wonders why we spend so much money on these toys, its all for the them. Looking forward to more informative vids.

Rick liners glad you enjoyed the video and totally agree the surf gate delayed convergence puts out a nice wave stock. However like you it was the overall package that we wanted most above all. Yea it for sure takes some time dialing in a surf tab boat compared to surf gate but once you get the hang of the system it's not bad and nice to have all the adjustability in the wave shape. Can't wait to install my Wakemakers kit and let the Max throw out a wave I know it's capable of! Yea I have the same handle on the Moomba forums and totally is all about making those family and friend memories in the water!! 😎👍

@haknslash
@haknslash 4 жыл бұрын
OKWakesurfing the thing that gets me with Heyday aside from its looks is they don't have any surf system which is strange for a "surf" boat in today's era. I suppose you have to list them or add suction cup surf devices to generate the wave and then no transition possible. I saw the wake9 video where they had a Heyday show up. Wave wasn't horrible but your A24 would be 100x better I'm sure.

Great Video! I am going to be putting my order in soon for a 2021 Max. Any advice for me? Also I was at the dealer the other day getting pricing, seems like with the moombas they are selling close to MSRP? I think he was going to give me a few k off MSRP but that's it. Does that seem about right?
@haknslash
@haknslash 4 жыл бұрын
In this given economy and climate I think boats are holding their value VERY strongly, especially on the used market since it's harder to obtain boats at dealers these days since they have sold them all with a rush of boat sales this year. I'm not sure if that is why but you should be able to haggle some money off MSRP. I've seen people say they can get close to 20% off but I think a lot of that is what boat brand. The Moomba's are Skiers Choices "value" or entry level wake brands so their margin is going to be lower than say a higher end Supra, Malibu, Centurion etc. I don't think you'll get 20% off a new Moomba, not these days, but you should be able to get a decent break to help offset your down payment. Put down as much as you possibly and affordably can IMO as it will only help you in the long run. Congrats on ordering a new Max. They will have a 7" screen option this year ($1k upgrade option) so I would definitely get that on your order. Having a larger screen is one of the things I always wished the Max and Helix had and I knew it was only a matter of time they would add it once they came out with the same offset dash on the Makai and Craz while using the 7" screen. My best advice is make sure you feel very comfortable with your dealer. These are custom built boats and it's not uncommon for a few of them to need some corrections within the first 50 hours or so. My dealer has been super awesome in addressing any issues or maintenance needs for me. Having a great dealer that takes care of you post-sale makes life so much nicer. When I had my Yamaha my dealer was a joke after I signed the papers. Their service department was also a joke. So it is refreshing having a good dealer and service department that I have now with Skiers Marine. I shopped for these boats for about 2 years before pulling the trigger and went to the dealers, all of them, several times to get a great feel for the place and how they treat people. Other than that know that the Max needs extra weight, or at least it did back in 2018-2019 models as they only came with 3,000 lbs ballast stock. Be sure to option yours with the G6 ballast and 4,000 lbs. I have the wakemakers kit now which gives me 4,770 lbs of ballast and the boat and wave is completely different and how the boat should have been. The Max is so big she needs weight to sit down in the water so it's good that they now offer a 4k lbs option for 2020's and it wouldn't surprise me if the 2021's come standard with the 4k lbs. Enjoy the Max and if you can, schedule a factory tour to Tennessee. You will see how these boats are built and they truly come down the same line and departments as the Supra's. I got to see the Kaiyen before it went public when we did our tour ;) and we also got to see my boat being built plus sit inside it on the shop floor which was really cool! Definitely worth the visit to the factory if you can swing it. Your dealer can help set that up if it's something you're interested in.

@@haknslash Yea it has been crazy shopping for a boat, most dealers in the area don't even have boats to demo on. I have young kids so I love how deep the max is! The 2021 Max has the 7" touch screen and wireless phone charger on dash as an option - It's only a $1,200 upgrade so I am for sure doing that. It also is coming standard with G6 pump 4,000 lbs ballast. Do you think that will be enough or should I start looking into aftermarket systems to add? Another option for 2021 is upgraded wheels and tires to 18" for the trailer - the dealer was saying it will tow better at higher speeds and less likely for tires to heat up and blow, so i'm going to get that option as well. I would love to get 20% off MSRP, but I think you are right, I don't think I will get that. Have you seen this site showing dealer invoices? seedealercost.com/marine/browse/product/moomba-boat-max-2020 Crazy if that is really the dealer's invoice, after putting all my options in - there is for sure 20% markup in the boat, but I get the dealer has to make money. I would be happy with 15% or even 10% off MSRP. I only have one moomba dealer near me so I am kinda stuck with them, but they seem pretty responsive and helpful so far. If they are willing to give me 10-15% off MSRP Im going to put my deposit down for a build spot and stop trying to look for a current 2020. Love your all your videos by the way - keep them coming!

Grayson Sabin I would for sure get the G6 ballast so if that comes with 4,000 get it. Depending on your size and crew size it may be enough. If anything you could always just replace the rear 1,000 lb bags with the Wakemakers 1,340 lb bags which is what I have. I think having a little extra weight in the rear goes a long way to compliment the midship bags. I am not sure I'd do the 18" wheels simply because tires will be more expensive. On our first year we trailered everything but on our second year we decided to pick our favorite lake within distance to our house and then get an enclosed storage unit that is within 5 minutes to the boat ramp, so trailering and tire longevity is a moot point for us now. The 18" wheels would certainly look nicer. Also just so you know, if your dealer is in good with Boatmate trailers who are literally right next door to Skiers Choice factory, have them swap in wheels you like. That is what I did to kind of make my trailer match my trucks wheels and be a little different from everyone else's stock trailer wheels. Glad you are enjoying my videos and I try to record each time I get out on the boat to share with everyone on here. 👍

@@haknslash My crew will be pretty light during the week, just myself my wife and two young girls. The weeknd might get a lot heavier as I have 4 brothers all over 200 lbs that will probably all come. I guess I will just wait and see how the 4k does then like you suggested add the wakemaker bags. Im in utah and most lakes will be about 40 to 50 min up the canyon so I will be trailering a lot. I will have to check and see if there is any enclosed storage close to any of the lakes nearby. Most the good lakes are up the canyon so not really close to any town or storage place. were you able to get a tour of boatmate? I would love to pick out different wheels! Did you just pick from the options they have on www.boatmatetrailers.com/build_your_own.php ? or did they just send you pics of what was available at the time? From the online moomba build they don't have a lot of options for the trailer config. Anyway thanks for all the great info, I really appreciate it.

Grayson Sabin yea I went on Boatmate's website and as long as I picked the same size wheels my dealer worked with Boatmate to swap/upgrade them for me. I didn't take a tour of Boatmate while I was there but that would have been cool as well. Glad to help answer questions you have and share my experiences. Excited for ya and I'm sure you'll love the Max! 4K ballast will hold you over especially for larger crew days. It will be much better than how the 2018-19's came with only 3k lbs. such a tall deep boat it really needed more than that from the factory. I think around 5k lbs is the sweet spot for mega monster wave on the Max but I'm content for now with my 4,770 lbs. it makes a nice wave now and now I just need to work on my skill.

Any thoughts on the Moomba Helix? Thinking about jumping into wake sport boat after years with a 17' Larson. Trying to keep the price down to a realistic price without getting a divorce :-) . Not sure I need a 24' boat...but our lake can get choppy and you say the Max handles the chop well. Any info would be super helpful!
@haknslash
@haknslash 4 жыл бұрын
The Helix can throw out a nice wave once you add some extra ballast or bigger bags with Wakemakers kit. It looks like a smaller Max but the hull running surface is a bit different and not quite like a Max. I'm not sure how it handles chop vs the bigger Max but best to demo one if someone is selling the Helix in your area. Moomba discontinued the Helix this year since it wasn't moving as much as the other boats and Max sales were crushing Helix sales so it made sense for them to drop it. They have redesigned the Mondo for this year I believe to be like a mini Kaiyen or Makai. The Max is a 22'6" boat but feels much larger and not at all cramped. We simply love it and the boat seems to have sort of a cult following in that everyone who gets one loves it for the money. It needs some extra weight than stock but these days they come with 4K lbs of ballast vs the 3k mine came with back in 2019 but I upgraded my ballast this year to have 4,770 lbs and it's been a game changer. Our lake is large open water and gets very crowded, especially since COVID, so any wind or boats the water can turn into big rollers and chop and any time it gets rough I just fill some front ballast and put the wake plate at 100 and it does great!

51spinedoc it gets rough on our lake and we often can have big swells and rollers. I went with the tallest boat partly because of storage but also because I don’t have to worry about taking water over the bow. Considering the fact none of these boats a true deep V hull from bow to stern, they still do pretty good in chop.
