Moon Knight episode 5 is easily the strongest of the series. Oscar Isaac puts on a clinic, and the truth about his past is a gut punch reveal that anchors the entire series in tragedy. But is this the best episode of an uneven series, or the capstone of a Marvel Cinematic Universe masterpiece? IN this video we analyze Moon Knight's story thus far, and evaluate how well this narrative is coming together.

#MoonKnight #Episode5 #Review
There’s this trend in Marvel Disney plus shows where the penultimate installment is used for introspection. Wanda re-examines her past with Agatha acting as therapist. Same reconciles the legacy of Captain america with amharic’as relationship to race. Loki literally speaks to himself. And Clint wore the ronin suit to confront his old sins. It makes sense, in the hero’s journey, the hero always has to reach a bit of self-actualization before crossing the final threshold and being granted a reward.
Episode 5 did all of this, with Steven learning about his true nature. But also, Mars facing his past and having his own therapeutic breakthrough.
The episode shows how much Oscar Isaac shines in this show. Hands up if you were really starting to think of Marc and Steven as different people. He adds all these little touches to Steven. It’s not just the accent, it’s his friendliness. Like heavy spoilers pointed out. When Tawret waves at him, he’s terrified, but still tries to give a little wave back.
When Steven was left behind, I was genuinely bummed out. I hope he’s not gone forever.
But what stood out for me about episode 5 was also kind of the weak point of the series: the structure. Not many superhero shows would save the origin for episode 5. I guess we’ve seen so many hero origins, that they wanted to take a risk and show us something new. So instead of Moon Knight being a superhero who happens to have DID, this show presented a person suffering from DID that happens to be a superhero.
It was a bold choice to introduce us to Steven first, and to show the story through his eyes. It puts the audience in the mindset of someone who suffers from this disorder, and I think it was a cool narrative choice.
But still, something about episodes 2 through 4 bothered me. The structure of holding back information made the show feel a bit disjointed, like it wasn’t telling a single story.

Moon Knight feels like the super hero show for people who are tired of super hero shows. It puts the hero work on the back burner to explore the struggles of the person behind the mask and their interpersonal struggles.

This is exactly what I've been thinking. I have loved the majority of the MCU stuff through Endgame. I've found myself liking less and less of the newer stuff (including nostalgia-fest No Way Home). I couldn't tell if it was super hero fatigue or if it was a lack of connection with some of the stories being told. I think I'm just wanting something a bit more cerebral than "I need to find and punch bad guy before bad guy do something bad". This show has a bit of that but its on the back burner compared to the perfect character study of someone with a mental disorder. My favorite parts of the prior disney plus shows were the character parts as well.

For someone who has NEVER heard about moon knight I think this show is the BEST introduction to a character. These other shows like “Wanda vision” and “Loki” already have strong lead ins from their movie parts (for those of us who only read some comics, or non at all) I love that it’s not a “super hero” show. If you don’t watch these breakdowns, the show really does unravel like an onion and I LOVE it. The only thing would suck if there isn’t a season 2, bc now I’m invested

Matt has unironically one of the worst takes I've heard, It sounds more like he's read an episode summary and not actually watched it. I feel like character development has been a main focus of the show since episode 1, It seems like Matt wanted Moon knight already fully developed and fighting internally. The Origin happening in episode 5 makes more sense, since not knowing who was the original made for a more personal story, making it more impactful that we find out at the same time as Steven. personally this so far is my 2nd favorite Marvel show, and if they stick the ending it could push to my #1.

I can't follow Matt's logic. I can understand he doesn't like the show, but I can't follow his line of argument as for why exactly. Maybe it's because I've never read a Moon Knight comic and he has a specific idea of how he wants it portrayed based on those that he's not good at communicating? I think the show is perfect. I like it even more than WandaVision, despite that being my previous favorite Marvel show by far.

Even if he does have a preconceived notion from a comic book, the show is HEAVILY inspired by two of the most recent Moon Knight comic runs, which are also arguably the first time Moon Knight was really given a lot of depth. He doesn't care about Steven because in the comics Marc is the real one, Marc in the comics is a Mercenary who doesn't hesitate to kill people, with no redeeming qualities.. he can fight, he can handle obstacle, he is basically the same as Steven.. So yeah, Matt Singer is simply a stupid idiot who can't see the biggest question of Moon Knight character in the comics "Why they are 5 different characters where they all can fight, they all can kill a god, they all quite smart in gaining information

Oh my GOD is this show great. I get that some people are not getting what they either expected or wanted. But it's 100% UNFAIR to judge a show based on what it ISN'T. You have to look at what it is, and what it is is a character study, and exploration of mental illness. It's set in the guise of a superhero story, but it's not a superhero story. It's not intended to be a superhero story. I HATE people who, acting as a reviewer is actually reviewing what they wanted something to be but wasn't instead of reviewing what something is supposed to be and whether or not it succeeded at being that. That is someone not having a clue what the job of a reviewer is. You don't like it, that's fine. But don't judge it for what it isn't. If you want a show to be a different show, make the show you want. Make it in your mind. But don't judge something for not being that show that you had in your mind. What would’ve made it better is for Steven to actually be a smarter character, more confident character and for Mr knight to have detective work especially on Ethan hawke character that being because he’s the antagonist. It pisses me off when they tried to inject humor into scenes like him fighting the body guards instead of feeding into actually portraying a bad ass character. Yeah I’d also say Steven is scared since his memories and upbringing was the “positive” side of Marks actual life. The innocent and nonviolent. That’s why Steven isn’t a badass as mark. He didn’t come into being as that. I would say that Steven being more smarter and calmer in his approach would make Mr. knight a cool detective and maybe finds more confidence in his Mr. knight form whilst interrogating someone who even fighting a monster since he has this powerful armor an abilities. But I think not following the comic to the T. Isn’t bad at all either. Take it as it is. How it’s being told. Not how we expect it to be.

Not knocking Loki, or WandaVision, or Hawkeye, but they had an easy job to do by comparison and still barely kept it afloat. This is a WHOLE NEW CHARACTER to the MCU, and is given the same timeframe to introduce him. So instead of trying to fill that space with mindless action trying to capture your eye with shiney and fast moving things, they've decided to bring you closer to what Moon Knight is other than a man in a suit beating up baddies.

I think that’s what so many, myself included, are used to. A lot of superhero action with character development tied in or taking a bit of a back seat. But with this show, we’re pushed to know the man far more than the hero. But at the same time, it’s the person who really makes the hero. That aside, the main reason why I wasn’t really into the show until episode 5 is, because I’m not a big fan of shows where you’re wondering if what’s happening real or just all in the character’s head. Getting invested in the story and character just to find out it’s not real drives me nuts! But that’s just me. 🤷‍♀️

"The stuff he's chasing doesn't even matter"...huh? He's trying to beat the villain to the stuff that will release Amit (or however you spell it). And as he's on the ship he realizes Amit has been released. I think it's been a brilliant origin story with a story outside of the origin tied in. We start being just as confused as Stephen when he finds out who mark is, and we see them race to beat the villain to the prizes, then in this episode AFTER HE DIES, we see a "lookback" through his origin story and I bet the conflict will be resolved in the final episode as we watch it knowing the origin story. As far as "lack of character development" that is also an INSANE argument. Mark and Stephen's relationship and individual growth has been ridiculously good and very cool.

Did they mention Konshu? A lot of the plot and “slow parts” were really focused on Konshu’s history and motives, as well as the dynamic between Marc, Steven and Konshu. For example, the scarab chase scene is pretty unnecessary, however it exemplifies Konshu’s oppressive control over Marc, versus Marc’s repressive control of Steven. Shows how Marc is burning the candle at both ends, performing traumatic tasks for Konshu, while trying desperately to hide the trauma from Steven. Exploring Konshu’s character also sets up later heroes/gods without having to explicitly explain what’s going on. I think they handled this complicated dynamic pretty well in five episodes, given that we have never really seen anything like this in the MCU, or anywhere for that matter.

I love how this series reframed superhero origin story and superhero show itself. It didn’t heavily relied on big action sequence, complex story arc, and huge CGI fx. Moon Knight lets us dive deeper into a superhero’s psyche. It’s so refreshing to see a story of guy suffering from mental illness who happened to be a superhero. It delivers a great message that we can help others while being broken and it’s so inspiring. Moon Knight has this heart and compassion in storytelling that other MCU shows failed to offer because some are after the gimmick or commercial viability

He said maybe he was expecting something else, but he never said what he was expecting. From what I understand, after watching Ryan's videos on the series, it's a pretty good adaptation of the source material, so I wish Matt had sorted his thoughts out a bit more before recording this.

I think the entire show is the origin story of Moon Knight. Feels like since Marvel knows MCU fans (those who don't read the comics like myself) don't know much about the character they decided to take the time to make us invested in the character. Every other show so far has been with characters who we've seen in 4+ movies so far. So we already liked the stars of the show. Here they needed to make us like Marc/Steven and get invested in his story going forward.

Oscar Isaac is, currently, the best actor in the world. Oh wow this is the first screencrush vid i could not get through. Like many others have commented, the disjointedness and hidden information in the show is an accurate depiction of what it's like to live with extreme trauma. I have been totally blown away by the accuracy and intensity of the therapeutic elements in the show too. I was so excited to see an authorative part of Mark (Steven) comfort and validate another part of Mark that was burdened by shame and self-doubt. I do hope Steven comes back because i LOVE him, but it would also make sense if he doesnt in terms of healing. Long term trauma (compared to a singular traumatic event), especially when experienced in childhood tends to tear the self apart, not just in personality but down to the physical functions of the body. One way to conceptualize healing is the journey of gathering, reconciling, and integrating all these different parts. I thought this might be the reason that steven was frozen in "the sands of time", signifying that the separation of self in childhood has been healed, and Mark has reintegrated Steven into his main personality.

I’m not like an oh moon knight fan and have read only a few issues of his newer runs (which have been great) and I pretty much went into this only wanting one thing to be taken over from the comics, his personality disorder. They genuinely could change everything else about the character besides the Egyptian mythos (since that’s what makes a moon knight) but if they just wrote a very interesting and good story on the disorder, I would still love it.

Moon Knight is definitely my favorite Marvel TV show so far. I really like that we get to see his backstory and struggles with his identity, even his identity with Moon Knight. Marc does NOT want to be Moon Knight, which is why he doesn't see himself as a superhero. He was manipulated by Khonshu into being Moon Knight, while also struggling with DID at the same time. This is why I can't disagree with Matt Singer more. Matt wants to see more of Moon Knight in action, but he doesn't get that in this show Matt doesn't even want that identity to himself and Matt doesn't care about seeing his struggles with DID. Matt also talked about how other superheroes also have "multiple personalities" like Marc, which is simply not true? DID does NOT mean multiple personalities (which is a common misconception), DID describes a person with FRAGMENTED personalities (inability to form one whole personality), so you have to take memory gaps and severe childhood trauma and abuse into account, which other heroes in MCU do not explore. DID is a real clinical cognitive disorder resulting from severe childhood trauma that significantly affects one's everyday life, it is not as simple as "taking on different roles and having different identities in life" like Matt described.

I feel very connected with all the characters, specially Marc and Steven, you can feel their struggles, pain and most important EMPATHY for them. That's a very good character developement. Of course Harrow has the same beat all the time because he's an interpretation in Marc's mind so... how much development of him we need? It's crystal clear at this point

I think Marvel is making the show more for people who are NOT comic nerds (like myself). I’m a psych nurse so the DID and the therapeutic process in Putnam has been so fun, interesting, and… serious. The lighter and more common sibling of DID is called “splitting” or “black and white thinking” (look it up). It’s something that could apply to most of us in that we unfortunately tend to look at things that are two sides of the same coin as opposite ends of the moral spectrum. The other thing I often see is that many comic nerds are slightly autistic and as such tend to be hypercritical if things aren’t how they think they “should” be. Anyway… I’m LOVING MoonKnight.

I loved looking up the character names, the icons and symbology, and the various philosophical meanings presented in the dreamlike nightmares of the nuanced performances of the actors. The simple fact that humans can get thoughts from their heads to a script to a production company for actors to then perform for us (in a medium millions can watch at the same time, and then we can further breakdown and comment upon within minutes or hours with our own thoughts for hundreds, thousands, or millions to continue thinking and studying, is indeed great for all of the Marvel franchises.🎉

It genuinely feels like this dude knocks all of the universally loved shows and movies, just to knock them. It's like he looks for anything to criticize. I get you can't shower/blanket every marvel production with love, or it seems disingenuous, but it also seems like disingenuous gatekeeping to always be like, this isn't what I expected, I don't like it. Matt is the type to go to comedy show and think he's funnier than all of the comedians. The shows very point and appeal is the confusion Marc/Steven are going through about why everything around them is happening. Steven is becoming aware of a life he didn't know he had, and Marc is confused why it's happening, while trying to finish his mission. Then you have the Jake plot looming. The mystery is the appeal, not what's bad about it.

Moon Knight has such a rich history. We should have an arc with the full origin with Bushman and Marc. We should have had an arc with Werewolf by Knight. We should have had an arc with the Asylum story. They didn't plan correctly for developing each of these defining arcs. We seem to be dropped in the middle which isn't bad if proper explanation was provided throughout the multiple episodes instead of having most of the defining moments dumped in one episode.

To be honest I disagree with the idea that it was disjointed and that saving the origin until episode 5 was a bad idea. I feel as though this disjointed nature of the show was part of its narrative structure. In a similar way to memento it places the audience in the shoes of the main character, we don’t fully understand why the things that are happing are happing just as Steven didn’t. It allowed for the intrigue to build whilst, simultaneously, the separation between the puzzling and grounded first two episodes and the more Indiana Jones esc third and fourth mirrored the two separate identities. The made the audience feel as though it was separated, yes. But that worked because one of the key thematic points is the separation between the identities. It made us physically feel the disparity between the two. For me, episode 5 was the let down. It could’ve explored this dissociation between mark and Steven better and revealed the origins in a much more intriguing and original way. I felt the reveal that his mothers abuse caused his DID and the clarification that Steven was created by mark wasn’t given the gravitas and severity it deserved. It also felt like very much the right place to reveal Jake as the third identity and not doing so made it feel as though an aspect was missing. Also, the cutting between the harrowing (no pun intended) back story in the asylum and the cgi boat scene and the attempts to build tension with it felt very forced. Cut between one version of the asylum and the more realistic grounded version, fine. Even start on the boat to do that. But it just felt as though the boat was used to build tension when the intrigue built by the first four episodes was enough (wonder vision did this way better by having the threat and unknown veritable being Agatha instead). All this is all presuming that the last episode, in marvel fashion, is a more stereotypical hero vs bad guy ending. If that’s not the case then this whole plot line and origin reveal could’ve been spread over the last two episodes and two distinct settings (the boat and the identities confronting harrow/ammet for example). This would’ve made the reveal and complexity of it so much more interesting and made it an exploratory of grounded real life issues - something marvel tries but struggles to do. Then it would’ve felt far more real and given this antihero a far more comprehensible narrative. It would also allow for a more interesting, authentic, and educational insight into DID for the majority of viewers - and provided proper representation for those who have first hand experience of the disorder without portraying it as a villainous and horror-esc trait as most media does. And this is all to say nothing of the outdated and very janky looking cgi in this episode.
