Moon Knight episode 5 is the most riveting episode in the entire season-and it features almost no action sequence. We journey into the mind and traumatic past of Marc Spector, picking up Easter Eggs form the comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe along the way. The episode confirms fan theories about connections to Black Panther, and hints about MUCH bigger connections to the wider MCU. We found all the details you missed, plus the BIG reveal that is yet to come.

This episode is called Asylum, which has a couple of different meanings. Obviously, the setting of the episode is primarily an asylum. But, as they say in the episode, the asylum isn’t literal. It’s actually a projection of Marc’s mind. It’s also important that Dr Harrow also gives this idea a name
Because, the hippo goddess Tawret and Dr Harrow represent two very different points of views. Harrow is analytical, scientific. He’s focused on marc’s mind Whereas Taweret is spiritual, and is concerned with marc’s soul. The two of them exploring the idea of an organizing principle is an easy way to explain to the audience that this hospital is not real, and it’s in Marc’s mind as he dies. Like we predicted in THIS video.
But asylum has another meaning. It’s a place where somebody is granted safety from the outside world. Marc created his actors as an asylum. Steven is an alter who shields him from his mother with love. The third personality that we haven't met yet is more violent, and he shields Marc with anger. The entire hospital is Marc finding safety from his own trauma, as he’s dying.
And by the way, the name of the asylum, putnam medical center, is the name of the fictional asylum marc inhabits in the comics-but more on that a bit later.
Have you guys noticed a trend with the Marvel Disney Plus shows? The penultimate episode is often about the character undergoing some kind of psycho-analysis or introspection. Like in WandaVision, she retraces her past with Agatha acting as a kind of therapist.. In Loki’s fifth episode, he had to communicate with versions of himself to understand himself better, before he can cross a threshold of consciousness.
Hawkeye episode 5 showed Clint returning to his old life as robin to confront his old sins. And in falcon and the winter soldier, Bucky and I fix the boat. And sam also reconciles the legacy of cap’s shield with America’s complicated history on race after talking to Isaiah Bradley.
So I guess we should have expected that Moon Knight-an episode about a character with DID-would have an episode dedicated to self-discovery and psycho analysis.
And I just want to apologize for using some outdated terms in past videos. I’ve been explaining DID as another name for multiple personality disorder, and calling the alters, other personalities and identities. I’ve been doing this to speak in layman’s terms so more people could understand the condition, and that was a mistake, I’ve learned a lot about DID because of Moon Knight, and I’m sure a lot of you have too. It’s been a great show to entertain, and enlighten us about this disorder.
The episode begins with a shot of the water in the cave, and the cries of Marc’s brother. This is interesting for a few reasons. Water is often used as a metaphor of the unconscious. It’s why so many horror monsters tend to emerge from the water. Like seriously, a lot. We did a whole video about that you should really check out.
And this episode is Marc journeying through his subconscious mind. So a flooding cave as a metaphor for his suppressed trauma pretty on the nose. But caves also java other symbolism. They burrow into the ground, like Marc is burrowing into his subconscious. They’re appealing, but dangerous-like the process of marc creating alter personalities.

I think , there was a huge error in the script of this episode ... you can mark it when Mark " the child " created his second persona " Steven" , then his mom entered the room inorder to punish who ... Steven or Mark ? so it would be believable if she punished Mark ... but , the scene left us with Steven , and here Steven won't know anything about what happened to Mark ... but , unfortunatly , the episode showed us that she beated Steven ... how couldn't he remember anything about that ? I get little bit confused .... also ... later on Steven described himself as a stress ball ...that Mark created .. what do you think ?

The room Dr. Harrow is in actually looks a lot like the storage room from episode two. When Steven and Layla are running from the Jackel and he can't summon the suit, he says that he is going to die in an old mans mummy chamber. That's what it reminded me of the most since Harrow always appears in that room.

Marc told Steven that Steven avoids his mother's punishments, but he tells him this right after Marc became Steven and then his mother came into the room to beat him. Hmm. So, just prior to her beating him, he was Steven. I think Steven then immediately created Jake just before his mother started beating him so Steven wouldn't feel his mother's wrath which is what Marc intended. This would also explain why Jake is the most violent personality as HE was the one who took his mother's physical beatings.

I just realized something rewatching all the episodes. Each personality has been associated with a color, Marc with white, Steven with blue, and Jake with red. In every scene with these different personalities, one of the colors sticks out either through a piece of clothing or a prop. e.g: steven's sarcophagus is blue, jakes sarcophagus is red. To go even deeper, there are also loads of scenes where we see blue and white mix together like the checkered shirt but we can always see a red item in close proximity implying Jake is there but hasn't been embraced by the others. It's a wild theory but seems to be holding up.

The way Marc tried to protect Steven it’s like the way he wishes he could have protected his real little brother everything in the way Marc has done things in London and reliving the flashbacks is to protect Steven’s “innocence” of his personality. Jake is protecting them both and does the hard and stressful things like the really horrific violence, and taking the abuse but also protecting them when they break up with Layla and when Steven doesn’t have the confidence to ask out Dillon the museum girl. He’s always there under the surface ready to break through and protect his little brothers.
@XAL

I think Jake was created when Marc retreated into Steven - but then the beatings started, so Jake was created to take the worst of it to spare Marc and Steven from the trauma. Jake probably takes over in the absolute worst or most stressful moments, and is not remembered intentionally because Jake still wants to spare them from the worst. This also explains why Jake was the identity in charge of ending the relationship with Layla.

Me too. It may be a long shot, but I still believe Mark dissociated into Jake/Scotty and executed those hostages (including Layla’s dad). That’s why Marc is so protective of Steven from seeing the actual beating that took place with his mother and why Steven doesn’t remember that moment at all. Steven (who was creates to have fond memories of his mother) wouldn’t be able to handle that, so Jake/Scotty was created to handle the brutality (both watching and doing it). And how every time mention of that third alter comes up (the kills on the rooftop, the third sarcophagus, constantly being called Scotty), Marc (and by extension Steven) choose not to go near it. Because it would be truly acknowledging and reliving that brutality again. Granted, this is just my theory 🤷🏽‍♂️
@dannyhodorowski5847
@dannyhodorowski5847 2 жыл бұрын
@@immanuela209 I think that’s plausible. Otherwise, the abuse scene would not make narrative sense - Steven taking a beating and only having fond memories of Marc’s/his mother. On the other hand Steven refused to believe he was the second personality he wasn’t ready to accept the truth . I believe these reasons are why the scales didn’t balance . I like the take that "Jake" got the cut on his face from the punch after Steven kissed Layla. Jake would do anything to protect Marlene and Datrice in the comics. So much so that he never even told Marc that he had a daughter. In the show his only love/hope is Layla. She is the reason he can cope with his insane, dark actions. So, he could have been jealous of Steven stealing a kiss. Marc even talks about the kiss later when he didn't need to because a punch said it all.

Also, think we can actually draw the conclusion that the drinking scenes we've seen so far have definitely been him. There is a moment when he's on the street where you can tell it's not the normal Marc persona, and again, I think the Jake transformations have been very subtle, but right in our faces. This show is AMAZING.

I get into arguments with people on social media all the time when I suggest it's insanity that Marvel movies are never considered for top Oscar noms. The level of writing and the acting performance from Oscar Isaac here is similar to some of the performances of other actors throughout the MCU film history. No Way Home not getting a best picture nod despite being equally or higher critically and audience reviewed as the other films is just asinine. People who don't watch these films have this unfounded opinion that superhero films these days are basically the equivalent to the Doom movie starring The Rock and have little to no value from a writing or performance position. These MCU Disney+ shows consistently and regularly tackle difficult social issues and showcase incredibly character growth and storytelling... you know... the same sort of content that films nominated for Best Picture Oscars have in their scripts....

I’m stuck on the idea that Mark always, somehow pulls Steven out before either can feel their Mother’s ACTUAL abuse, as he did in this Episode…granting them both Asylum. That leads us to the third personality, who’s had to endure some of the harshest trauma. An identity who feels such rage from being locked away, feeling perhaps alone and abandoned he’s become a berserker of sorts. And Im thinking Konshu knows he exists and is a fan of him…a fan of Jake. This episode really skyrocketed my appreciation for this Series. Oscar Isaac is just so damn good, as is the writing and everyone else. Ending is a farce pipe dream because the bad guys have no clue about Jake, and think getting rid of one soul is enough…?

You mentioned that Harrow's office is modeled after the tomb of Alexander the Great, but I actually think it might be the "evil magician's man cave" from episode 2. The brick walls, pipes/columns, and even the arches on the opposite sides of the room and the large window are all exactly alike! I think it has the significance of Layla trying to convince him that his name is Marc and that he can fight, almost like how Harrow is trying to convince him that this has all been in his head.

As he was raised in a religious Jewish home, Mark Spector (=specter, a ghost?) would have known about the important tradition of the mikveh, a ritual purification in which one is totally immersed in water that must be connected to a natural source like a spring, and which is used to wash away ritual uncleanliness. It can look very much like the water he falls into when he is shot. It is also interesting that Episode 4 happened this year during Passover, which is a celebration of liberation from Egypt, a defining moment of Jewish identity and involves God passing judgment on the Egyptians…not to mention Moses, who had a dual Jewish/Egyptian identity…

Or, they're in the headspace doing something else. Or simply unconscious. Sometimes, Marc, Steven , and at times Jake, seem to Co-front, or be co-conscious! Sometimes alters, or the host, won't remember what happened while others were fronting because of a disassociative barrier. Time blindness and memory loss is quite common! : ) -Steven.

The song that comes out at the end when Steven dies is a Christian song in Spanish called "Más allá del Sol" It alludes to the Christian belief in an eternal life of peace after death, something that fits perfectly with this series knowing that the Egyptians believed in a life after death even long before the Christians. I'm not sure if it's going to be revealed in the final episode, but there should have been a scene of Steven as a child in the bedroom where Jake switches with him for protection right before his mom bursts in the room to beat him. We would be hearing Steven screaming from the abuse along with his confusion asking why his mom was beating him off screen if it didn't happen. And we know that Steven only remembers his mom as a kind and loving person with no memories of any abuse. A scene like this would even mirror the same scene in episode one where Steven switched with Marc, turning into Moon Knight a split second before the jackal attacked them.

Some Jewish things you missed: Shiva and the Kippa When sitting Shiva, it is tradition to cover mirrors in order to concentrate on one’s inner self and not your outward appearance. Reflections have been incredibly important in Moon Knight, so the meaning of the mirrors being covered is significant. I want to also bring up the scene where Mark throws his Kippa (Kee-pah) or Yamurlke (Yaw-mah-kah) to the ground, then picks it back up and puts it to his heart. Firstly, men where Kippot (Kee-poh-t, plural of kippa) as a reverence of God, and as a reminder that God is above us. Khonshu is an outside source, commanding respect, and manipulating Mark and Stephen. I see Mark’s throwing of the Kippa into the ground as him fighting with God (in this case, Khonshu), and then putting it to his heart because his reality with Khonshu will always be a part of him. My husband (username David Rosenberg, icon is a baby Groot) has also commented on all of your Moon Knight Easter egg videos with more insight as to how Mark’s Judaism has played a significant role throughout the show.

I’ve been meaning to say something about it. I knew you were using it so that people could understand the condition better. However, instead of saying dissociative identity disorder is “also known as” multiple personality disorder, the more accurate thing to say is that DID is “formerly known as” MPD, since MPD is the outdated term. I always look forward to them and you guys create some of the best content on KZfaq. Keep up the great work!

The only thing confusing to me is if Jake Lockley is in the sarcophagus, why wouldn't there have to be three hearts on the scale?

@@419HLR Understood he wasn't there. But he's still apart of Marc, and if he(they) are indeed between the land of the living and the dead, wouldn't the scales still be unbalanced though until Marc confronts Jake?

@@chrishart8251 As far as Marc's mind is concerned there is no Jake, so he can't be judged.

My guess is that's why they never balanced, until Steven went overboard. So now there are two hearts and two "people" on the ship.

It’s also interesting to me that the goldfish drawing was almost finished by his brother but is unfinished on the wall in the frame. I wonder if that was an oversight or if there was some meaning behind it.

Probably the BEST Easter egg video you guys have produced. The mic drop, Doug’s mom, the dig at TWD. Absolutely perfect.

I find it ironic that on the Tomb Buster poster the tagline says ..."Steven Grant has no fear" yet the Steven Grant we know, often feels nothing but fear, he's a bit of a scaredy-cat. Which I find understandable cuz I would be too heh

Guess on my part. Having been a child who was beaten by their mom, you learn real quick that if you "fear" her, your life will get better (not for long, but child mind logic). Being fearless wasn't going to make your life easier. Remember when he first became Steven, he started picking up his room to be the best boy he could be? So, my guess is that he became Steven out of fear, but the persona had to be what his mother wanted to keep the peace.

He doesn’t fear LIFE. He’s open minded, he doesn’t stress too much… Even after discovering he’s waking up in different countries, the guy laughs it off and tells his mum. That’s bravery.

In the scene were Steven falls off the boat and Marc calls out to him over and over is definitely a reference to Cast Away where he loses Wilson - also a coping mechanism and not real friend - once he loses Wilson he finally has to come to grips with his reality and has accepted his fate.

I also noticed the crave water connection. When he was being let go from his gift shop job he was staring pretty heavily to the little cave water fall that the HR guy had on his desk. I realized that must’ve sparked something within him about how it connects to maybe something familiar to him but he isn’t sure what. But turns out to be his childhood trauma.

I always thought Dr.Harrow seems to be modeled after Carl Gustav Jung rather than Stan Lee. Ethan Hawke also said something like that in an interview, that he modeled the character as a cross between a monk and a doctor like Jung. Thanks for the great videos!

One thing to point out as well is that when Mark first becomes Steven as a child you pointed out that he was waring a checkered Shirt to show he has a different alter if you look underneath his shirt he is still waring a white shirt showing that Mark is still there just underneath Steven.

I think it is all in his head, the broken mirror pattern at the end of episode 2 on the monument where he talked to Kanshu was the same as on the mirror it cut to in Cairo and in this one the kid drew a one finned fish which ties into the adult fish he has, goldfish do not live that long and I doubt he bought one with a single fin on purpose. I think all of it is in his head thus far.

I'm sure someone else pointed this out, but the checkered shirt actually has 3 colors. The white (Steven), the dark blue (Jake), and the shaded lighter blue (Marc) that is the center of the 2 that connects them. But it was great to see someone point out the shirt selection and its connection
