Thank you Viz for really introducing me to Sailor Moon and allowing me to have much more appreciation for beautiful hand drawn classic anime. I've had so much fun watching this new dub with my mother and sister. We loved seeing all 3 movies in theatres over previous summers and we cannot wait for the new Sailor Moon Crystal film in 2020! PLEASE continue to save more series like you did here ...would love to see something like Tokyo Mew Mew saved next!! Thank you Sailor Guardians!

Happy Birthday Usagi! Sailor moon was the first anime I watched along with dragon ball z and pokemon. I've just finished binge watching the ENTIRE original anime throughout the month of june. Sure I would've chosen the reboot sailor moon crystal for it being true to the manga, but the original one will always be my favorite.

This particular transformation animation is burned in my mind. I was a very young teenager when this came out in the 90s and I watched it because the girls were cute and feminine and "Japanese animation" started to interest me. Strong fighting men, robots and beautiful and/or cute girls. Then I watched Akira and Ninja Scroll... oof.

I remember in high school watching this whole show on your site. I would watch it every single day after school for the entire school year in 11th grade. Now with the news of crystal / cosmos finally about to end this summer I'm doing the same as an adult with the remake. So many memories, I'll cherish this show forever. 2017 was a year that changed me and this show was a big part of it.

It's uncensored and follows the OG Japanese language version pretty faithfully. The old DiC version was edited to make it more "family friendly

@@Firewolt Serena still imprints in my brain instead of Usagi, comes when the show actually started originally through DiC Sailor Moon. Viz never originated Sailor Moon, DiC and the Japanese did. Serena or Usagi doesn't matter. Rini or Chibiusa. Darien or Mamoru. Don't demean people's experiences with Sailor Moon. Viz is not memorable for Sailor Moon talent wasted for half a decade.

How did they actually animate this, I wonder? I mean, the body and the background both have scrolling patterns. Surely chroma key wasn't involved.. and it can't be that they cut a hole in every single frame of the background to let another pattern show through.

Every frame is painted over a transparent sheet or cell, so switching patterns is no trouble because every moving segment is painted on separate/individual cells that stacked up form the whole composition of the scene frame
