Yes, MAGICAL aliens. The amount of energy required to change the moon's orbit to do this is staggering. Feels more like a plot for Once Upon a Time. See Scott Manley's video on the required change in velocity, though he does not describe the actual amount of energy needed.

@@sankhawkulathantille There's soft and hard sci-fi, and everything in between. What you described is hard sci-fi. My guess is this is soft sci-fi. The softest sort will border on fantasy. Creatively, limiting sci-fi to just hard would severely limit our imagination.

I think Moonfall was a product of that scene in Independence Day Resurgence when the Mothership was landing on Earth and almost every area on Earth experienced a gravitational force caused by an extremely large object.

Technically, this is an ancient astronaut theory. Apparently, the moon is not a natural satellite. It's an alien base ready to either attack us or its currently inactive with its inhabitants dead or in a different dimension or galaxy.

SPOILER ALERT: In the end, tragedy is avoided and the moon nearly misses colliding with Earth. However it is no longer tethered to Earth's orbit and it goes traveling rudderless through space. Space: 1999 (or would it be 2099?) film franchise is born.
