This superb simple system clarinet was made in in the early part of the 20th century by a little Itailian family instrument company called Borgani, now famous for its expensive hand built saxophones. Visit their website for more info. The clarinet is marked 'for S. Pagani and Sons, Scotland', a retailer whose music shop was at the rear of the Usher Hall in Edinburgh. It has been fully restored by Bryce Ferguson of www.brassandwoodwind.co.uk Edinburgh.

@mattissurf Hi Matti, I'm glad you like my stuff. Now that I no longer work for an employer I'm a pro musician ...after a lifetime of doing gigs as the second string to my bow. As you have said, I believe musical feeling is more important than technical facility, but to have both is the best. I'm travelling to Bute in a couple of hours to play in the Jazz Festival with Bill Salmond's Louisiana Ragtime Band. It's a sunny day and I'm feeling good. All the best, Ian

@mattissurf Hi matti, sax is my first instrument. I started on clarinet when I was 35. I took up the alto sax when I was 16. But I prefer the tenor because it is so forgiving. Greetings from Scotland!

Lovely, I play both Boehm and Albert System, prefer the sound of the Albert but nothing wrong with Boehm, I'm playing a 1929 Boehm Selmer Metal Sterling just now, I go on gigs with a Boehm Bb and a simple Eb, surprises people I can play both systems with ease.

I'd be forever grateful if you could put the backing track for this up at jamends. You inspired me to start playing again! Your ability is improvise/amend songs is terrific.

Hi Barrie, I'm surprised that you can swap between both, well done. I started learning the flute and had to give it up because I started playing flute fingering on my clarinet with disastrous results on gigs.

@BOPPPPER Ian, thank you so much for the time and effort--and for your new sax rendition of this great piece! The backing for the clarinet version is different, no? Would you have that on file somewhere as well?

Man,you are great. However I prefer your tenor, especially the Flying me the moon version (that's how I found you). Clarinet is my instrument (starting 4 years ago after 35 years of break) until I bought myself a tenor saxophone two days ago after pressure from my swing band members.I might stay with the tenor at least now, as I have practiced for two days, which is twice as much as yesterday :). As a background I use iReal made for iPod and iPphone. Greetings from Norway!

Hi John, I would advise you to stay on the Boehm system. After all, if it was good enough for Benny Goodman... I was into New Orleans creole jazz when I took up the Albert, and you can play just as good jazz on the Boehm.

Yet another wonderful video, Bopppper! I have, however, one question to ask you, or any other viwers of this video. I have recently started teaching myself clarinet on a cheap Bb boehem system clarinet that we had in our house. Now that I am starting to get more serious with the instrument, I was wondering if you thought it would be beneficial to switch to an albert system if I want to play jazz, or just keep on playing the boehem? Thank you~John

I had a Borgani soprano sax .. only paid 325 USD for it used so I doubt it was the expensive hand built kind you referred to .... played remarkably in tune for a soprano though ...

Thank you for answering. Are you a professional musician? I’m definitely not, I take care of university students and I play just for the fun of it. But I must say that you tenor playing really did hit me as I love the soft swing jazz. Some of the “big guys” like Benny Goodman, Ben Webster, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker are technically good, but miss the feeling which you can find by Coleman Hawkins and Stan Getz.

Hello Ian, great playing as always! I play just like you music on YT. As soon I send a upload of a wellknown song I I get a warning, how come you have all songs in, no warnings for you?
