this scene is so powerful and heartbreaking because this was when he realized he had nothing left to lose. his mother doesn’t care about him, his only father figure is dead, and his only friend betrayed him. so what he did didn’t matter anymore, which is ultimately why he did this without caring about the consequences.

@@anime_weeb436 what's funny is people know the consequences of bullying but they do it anyway. And play victim when this shit happens. He had it coming. Sometimes you gotta grow up and be responsible for your actions and take the punishments. Part of growing up. Because even though he did a bit too much by hitting him with a chair nobody told his ass to bully in the first place. So now that's on him. He knows what he did and he knew what would happen.

The way Black Chiron is introduced in the third act with him submerging his face in the sink of ice water is so powerful. The echo of this scene in contrast with the first one alludes to the fact that even though he has changed outwardly, he still feels the same amount of conflict as he did when he was a teen. Also it makes me feel like this ice sink thing is something he continued to do ever since that day as a way to remind himself that he's not someone to be fucked around with. Such a good freaking movie.

Rebecca Chang It was a powerful scene. I liked the religious symbolism. The blood down his face reminds me of Christ on the cross. And he's dipping his face in water, almost as a baptism of sorts (which is also tied to the scene where Juan teaches Little how to swim, another "baptism scene")

The scene of him waking up from a nightmare ... a grown man, all bulked up externally against vulnerability, but still a little boy internally scarred by his mother. The trauma of parental abuse and neglect. Powerful and moving. The adult Chiron and Kevin captured the longing, loneliness, sadness, yearning, regrets, desire and hope in their eyes. An amazing 30 minutes of masterful acting. Will never tire of the third act.

The hardest thing to watch is how Chiron, who is characterized by his gentleness and sweet nature, just throw that beautiful heart away because the world is expecting him to be a “man”. Watching him break that chair over that bully’s back is like watching Chiron break it over Chiron’s back. Because we all know that’s not who Chiron is. That’s not the shy, timid boy who swam in the ocean with Juan and who couldn’t raise a hand to the boy he fell in love with. That’s the person everyone has punished him for NOT being.

What really got to me was the scoring. The orchestral score obviously juxtaposes the images of violence, but the most powerful part to me was when Chiron is being put in the cop car while Kevin watches. The score here was just an orchestra tuning, which an orchestra does before a concert. This tuning symbolizes the new beginning of Black, another "concert" in Chiron's life.

Morgan Glover That’s actually the shutter speed being increased. When the shutter speed is higher, it makes the individual images look more focused so the motion becomes more intense looking like in the scene. It’s a perfect cinematographic choice for the scene. Completely out of character from the rest of the film because it truly highlights the intensity of the scene.

Chiron had more than every right to defend himself and whip that bully's ass. It's messed up how many teachers don't do jack when they see students get bullied, but when the student decides to defend themselves, they not only intervene, but they also punish the students who defends themselves which is stupid and dumb. And teachers who do stand up the bullies get treated badly. What would have made this movie slightly better was for Kevin to give a mention of what ever happened to the bully who got his ass whipped. His head wasn't the only thing that was bruised. Tyrell's ego was. He didn't like nor accept that he got his ass whipped by a gay kat.

I remember seeing this movie in theaters, and you could literally feel the tension in the air. My heart was pounding; I thought he was going to kill him. It’s an experience only the best of cinema has to offer. So many mixed emotions: you’re satisfied the punk got beat down, but it’s absolutely heartbreaking... I’ve never seen another movie that portrays the pure rage and pain a character is feeling in such a goosebump inducing way. And hardly a word is said. You could watch this movie with the sound off, and this scene still wouldn’t lose any of its weight. Brilliant, magnificent film making!!

I think the reaction shot of the teacher is just brilliant. It’s the shock but disappointment of seeing another young black man give into his violent surroundings.

I'm surprised Ashton Sanders career didn't blow up I know he did equalizer 2 and currently RZA in Wu Tang Show but I felt like he should be a huge star already in leading roles since Moonlight was 7 years ago

Fcking hell I only wish no child these days gets to suffer like that. If my death could solve all the bullying in this world, I would die. I know you probably think I'm just saying it, but it's true.
