Annie also has the best voice production in terms of how well her registers are connected and how consistent her voice sounds at the lower and higher end of her range. Incredible diction too. Again, nothing that makes the voice by itself best for ALL music.

Stop with the nonsense, Annie and the Renassance were ahead of their times, there music , amazingly mesmerizing, had to be heard in person, I saw the Renaissance in my Alma mater, Hunter College in 1976-77, and Annie blew us all away, Ruthie Henshall is in another league , but, let's wait 35 years and see how her voice can hold up! Give Annie and the Renaissance their immortal spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, already!

Renaissance fans will appreciate Annie's vocal style that made them beloved in the 70's and 80's, but pop tunes do not showcase her voice properly.. She has a super voice, classically trained.

Just goes to show that even the very, very best can be thrown off course when let down by other band members.....If Annie had been forewarned that she would be singing the start virtually a cappella, at least she would have been ready for it....The performance picked up once the band got into their stride but, by then the damage was done. She is still my number one though.....

Amazed at how many here are talking shit. This sounds great. What she was doing at the beginning was a look of disapproval to the one guitarist in all Black who was fucking around with his floor rig. I believe she thought it unprofessional. Her voice is just great,as is the tune.

The key to sucess is to be just the right amount of time ahead of your time otherwise the followers cant keep up and they lose your direction.

@mallard4998 'Going through the motions' is what I felt listening to this and other clips from this concert. Her usual, chirpy energy is strangely absent here. It is well documented in interviews that the going was tough for her at this time. She was in a dilemma whether to go commercial or stick to her strengths at this time. Ofc, Blessing in Disguise would happen and change everything but the late 80s is the pits of Annie's career.

:45 Ann is pissed at something. That look could melt an iceberg in a second. This is a tough song for her to cover. It is almost like she is holding back and Maggie really made this her song.

That look she gave at the beginning was, 'What are ye at'? Instruments started in the wrong key for her and she had to continue but let the guitar player know when she finished.

@ProfessorZaroff No but she has a voice similar to Maddy Prior's, who sings on some tunes by Oldfield (mainly on 'Incantations').

@mallard4998 She has alluded to how back in the 70s, the band performed at venues like Carnegie Hall, Radio City Hall and such but when she started her solo career, she had to perform at much smaller venues and had to promote herself. Not writing her own music didn't help matters.

Annie is a superlative singer but she must have had monitoring issues here.

*bump* It may be pertinent to mention here that she was already deaf in one ear by this point. I don't know about this concert, but at this point she was supposed to have also experienced severe pain in the ears. It might explain why not only here but in general, in concerts from the 90s or later, her intonation lacks the precision she possessed in the 70s. Must be a nightmare to sing live, especially very 'clean', melodic material, when you can't hear yourself or the other musicians well.

She needs another crack at it with some proper backing and a far better electric guitar solo... Wonder if she ever did a Studio version .

I think though at about 1.25 of the vid that she became a bit more comfortable and got into it more..she saved it,in my opinion.

Right, there are at least three different kinds of female voices as per fach without getting into lighter/heavier voice types. I think what people mean is she is technically the most accomplished singer....at least in rock/pop. I don't know of very many I have heard that I would rate higher. Unfortunately, people tend to club everything related to singing in the word 'voice' but there's no such thing as 'best voice'.

It is hard to listen without comparing to Maggie Reilly. Rather not comment...
