That thing is absolutely drop dead gorgeous, I love seeing the toasted wood under the burn line like that. So cool. A couple thoughts from someone who studies resin for a living: - The aggressive exotherm you are seeing there can be legitimately dangerous. Obviously the cracking is distinctly not ideal, but more importantly there is a very real risk of fire with a resin that is trying to run away on you. All epoxy resins are exothermic, so they produce heat as they react. The hotter the resin gets, the faster it reacts, the hotter it gets, etc. Especially when you then put it in a pressure pot with 6 times more oxygen than usual, this can legitimately go oh-god-oh-god-we're-all-gonna-die bad. In the aerospace industry the autoclaves are all filled with pure nitrogen for this reason. I would highly recommend switching to a deeper pour resin for pieces of this volume. - If you want to avoid the voiding problems you are getting with trapped volumes, I would recommend pulling vacuum on your part before putting the resin in. This is a mite tricky because you need an expendable hose that passes through your pressure pot lid and goes down into the casting mold, but that is doable if you have a ball valve big enough to pass a tube through. You can seal from the tube to the valve body with tacky tape (for making vacuum bags). Clamp off the hose (a full bend pinched with a small clamp works well), then pull the pot down to vacuum for a bit (minutes to hours). Disconnect the vacuum pump, mix up the resin, put the hose in the resin, then gently crack the clamp on the hose. Be careful with it, you want the resin to go in fairly gently. Once all the resin is in you can open the pot, remove the hose, close the pot back up, and put the thing under pressure. This process is a mite involved, but it will allow you to get resin into all sorts of screwy geometry.

I think your idea was and is awesome. I think you learned a lot. I applaud you for it and now subscribed. I’ve had a long standing idea about first using a vacuum chamber to remove bubbles, then using a pressure pot. Together they will do more to keep structure solid. Your idea to use thicker acrylic is good and then divide your pour into two distinct stages. Let that first half cure completely before proceeding with second pour. Overall I give you a 10. Your idea is solid.
@MoonpieCreations
@MoonpieCreations 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Robert, Doing two pour causes what is called a witness line. Thickset (It's a lot thinker) would alloy me to make a larger pour and maybe not have cracks. I have heard that using the vacuum to remove bubbles first helps. Thank you

Two things I liked about this that set it apart from other turning videos: 1) You used titles or brief narration for the steps, all your tools, grits, and finishes. 2) You experimented with a new method, not knowing whether it would work. I really appreciate innovation. Very nice job, sir. Edit: I posted that before finishing the video. There's a third thing I really appreciate: you summarized the project with self-criticism and suggested improvements. This makes it truly educational. BTW, you're too harsh a grader. This was an experiment. Did you end up with a functional bowl? Yes. Was it aesthetically pleasing? Yes. So you get a passing grade. Don't argue with me. I was a teacher for 30 years. 😉

Great work Ken, you do have a tendency to do some massive resin pours lol, but I also understand you not wanting a 'witness line'. I can only imagine the folks from Total Boat watching and going "HOLY F**K!" haha. I love the color, love your videos, just great stuff Ken!

They love how I experiment and push their product. lol but I am sure you right as they have had that 🤔 look. The most I have poured in a bowl without cracking was 3800g. That is still massive.

This is gorgeous. Have you heard of kintsugi? It is the Japanese art of mending broken bowls with gold mixed into the glue. A gold effect into those cracks, if possible, may enhance your lovely work. Cheers from Australia, stay safe.

It warms the cockle's of my heart to others who share the same level of shop cleanliness and organization as myself:) Really loved the concept, people who don't turn themselves, often times do not realize the effort and dedication each piece takes, success or failure. Keep the faith buddy.

Hahahaha, my shop is a mess. I clean it once a month. 😂I missed last month because I was sick. Now it seems so overwhelming. But today is the day I clean it up.....sort of.
