In this video we take a look at a knife that I have been using for the past five years nearly. The knife in question is the ever popular Mora 'Bushcraft Black'. An awesome knife for the money, costing around £30.00 the Bushcraft Black takes some beating. Whether you are looking for a primary blade or a secondary blade to add to your kit, this knife never seems to fail to impress. I would like to the 'Danny Phillips' from the US who gifted me the Kydex sheath, a true gent............. Many thanks for watching.

@@ccmogs5757 thats exactly what i thought... mild scouse with a trace of brum. Maybe saint helens or southport. Im in lancs myself and i definitely detect a strong lancs with scouse thing going on. Probably the BEST buchcraft/fire making knife on the market! I own a ton of custom and semi-custom knives, that cost up to 500$, nothing comes close to the Buchcraft Black! After I reprofiled it, to a slight convex, this became THE perfect bushcraft knife!

Other than the 90° spine the Mora HQ Robust is a much better bargain, same steel same thickness and a good handle shape. I got one coming in the mail cause I sold mine a year ago and always kicked myself for doing so. I have come to love the Garberg its an excellent knife but I was one of the lucky ones who snagged it for $56 on Amazon. Your Black has a wicked polished edge looks like a bit of convexing to, I always give mine a scandivex edge, it seems to hold up better plus I just like how it works with wood. IMO I think the Bushcraft black should be in the $25-35 range, considering it has the same amount of material and nothing other than a 90° spine that separates it from a Companion HD, Mora needs to stop that game. The Bushcraft Forest, Tri-flex, 2000 and kansbol all share something in common, they're all the same knives with different handles, and the Eldris is the Light My Fire with 2-3 inches less blade length. The LMF is $17 at my local sporting goods outfitter, it comes with a 4 inch blade edge combo and fire steel, yet the two inch Eldris comes with no fire steel for $25 and if ya want the fire steel and sheath neckless ya get to fork over $37-40 😮😣 Thats one spendy fire steel and strip of cowhide.

Hi Airik1111, many thanks for watching. Your quite right, the HQ Robust is an awesome knife for the money. I have a couple knocking around at work that we use frequently and have stood the test of time, certainly for the amount of abuse and the environment that they are in. You did well to get the Garberg for $56.00, they are anything from £80-110 here in the UK. Not sure what that would work out in dollars, but it is hell of a lot more than $56. Thanks again and have a great day, Mark.

I recently broke a Kansbol, while doing some battening. The blade fractured about 2 cm inside the handle. The distributor replaced the knive, which is good as I was shocked at how easily the blade failed. They also advised that battening should only be carried out with a full tang knive.

You won't be dissapointed if you decide to buy one. I tend to carry mine on most trips out and gets used quite regulary. The grind on them lends its self to being sharpened. There are no fany angles that are required to get the edge razor sharp. If you struggle to sharpen a knife on a stone then try stropping. It is only if the edge has become damaged in anyway e.g. chipped will I use a stone. Most of the time I just strop my knives. Its easy to do and its cheap. You will be amazed how well it can work, even on a dull edge. Plus again, you don't have to worry so much about the angle, as the leather gives and covers the entire edge. i have been toying with doing a sharpening video, so maybe it will be the cards soon. Thanks again, all the best Mark.

For my stropping compounds Ant I either go to halfords and buy a tube of Auto-sol, which is a metal polishing paste or I use Tormek, again which is pretty much the same as the Auto-sol. I like this knife better than the Morakniv Garberg. Now, why would they go and change the handle's shape into something less comfortable and less safe on the Garberg is beyond me?

I just wish the garberg had the same rubber over mold but apparently Mora says they wanted to make the knife and durable as possible so that's why they didn't.

@@dirtysouthbushcraftandmma9784 This is what I've read too often why people prefer those harder materials, like micarta G10, durability. But there's a reason working tools like hammers and screwdrivers you name it, have rubber on the handles. Grip , comfort, less cold in hand etc. And those rubber handles will last many years. What are they thinking. It has to survive 2000 years so they can put it in a museum afterwards? Those rubbery handles as seen in the Mora Companion and Mora Bushcraft are the most grippy and most comfortable. No cold tang against the hand either ( a pointed 👉 to those always thinking only full width tang are good).

Say Heah M8 Cheers. Yeah, Good Review, I like my Mora Knives, I have a vintage Mora that has a metal pommel, hand guard, and a leather Sheath with metal trim, I think a while back I read it might be a military issie, But I can't find any info on it, It does have a birch handle and appears to be a full sticktang.I also bought a Forest Exclussive #277 before Mota discontinued it like they did the #311, Its one of my neck knives, its a handmade and also a full sticktang with a lovely leather Sheath. Then my harder use Mira, my Fav. Mora 2000 and has a tang like on your Bushcraft Black, Yeah, I really like that Dual Grind, and its easy to get sharp. I also have a vintage Frost Mora 840 Clipper MG, and its tang is short, but its robust and they placed the hard plastic in strategic places so its very lite and strong, Yeah, I had it for years, and it appears its going to out last me. Then ofcource my Mora Classic #1, I piggybackrd it with my Bokor Black Vox Rold, I put a nylon belt loop on it with a handle strap, the strap was a little too big, so I slipped my Classic #1 on it, It turned out great. But my Mora 510 and my Classic #1 have identical blade profile, so I use my 510 as my go to neck carry, Its awesome lite knife that can suorise you how tough it is. Oh, I also teamed my Mora 2000 with my Mora Hatchet plus I added my Bacho Laplander and I made a real lite trio, I have a Haversack that I generally use with this trio, so the Hatchet and saw are carried in the Haversack. My Haversack is a Flapover Shoulder Purse but its Camp and nobody know the difference. . Again, Good Review, and Cheers.,,. as my go to neck knife,

Hi Paule 4X thanks for watching and for the comment. Man it sure looks like you like your Mora's. Regarding the vintage Mora that you think might be a military issue, I would take a photo of it and email it to Mora and see what info they can give you on it. I have recently purchased an Eldris for work and I noticed that it has a secondary grind on that, similar to your 2000. Its an interesting looking blade and was wondering what the best way to sharpen it is. The Eldris comes with a micro bevel, so I will most probably run with that for the time been. I Like the sound of your cutting combo, I haven't tried the one of the Mora hatchets yet, but I have heard only good stuff. Thanks again for watching and have a great weekend, all the best, Mark.

Yeah, It has three crowns and the A is latge. Yeah, Its in excellent condition, and its thicker also and like Mora it holds a decent edge, Its a larger knife and a thicker blade. I did see a video on KZfaq, but mine is in alot better condition, and I keep it like that. But yeah, I was going to take my Rodent 6 out which I had modified, I had the top guard taken off and thinner down, so the saber is a little higher, so I can get a sceeery sharp edge on it, Its a great steel too a 52100 done Busse Technology way. I like teaming it with my Mora 510 as my neck knife. Because I just got a LT Weight GSN, its half the price as the Ray Mears Woodlore, But I'M HOPING, its every bit as good. Oh, I also got it in 3V, a real lovely piece of kit. So I'll take it through its pages. I did have the 2Hawks Warbeast Tomahawk and the Wicked Tough Saw Combo. plus I just got a Snody SnaleCharmer to use as my neck knife with this still very lite trio. Infact I joke and say my GSN is my Po'Mans R M Woodlore. But all joking aside, I know its made every bit as well. Yeah, for the $$$ Its a Keeper.,,.

I love my LT Wright GNS, I have to Genesis too which again is an awesome knife. I grew up watching Ray Mears back in the late 80's and have always wanted one of the A. Wood knives that Ray has with the bone handle, but didn't want the 10 year wait. But I only recently found out that Stephen Wade Cox who made the Ray Mears knifes had died, so there are no more available. I'm sure you will be just as happy with the GNS, but another knife maker worth checking out is Ben Orford here in the UK.
@paulie4x1
@paulie4x1 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, Ben is a upstabding friend, But dealing with knife makers across the pond, It automatically incluseds a money transfer cost, I only deal with cash or money order, You see, I was ripped off, well almost ripped off dealing with ebay and paypal and they didn't stay by me, they acted as if they didn't care, and I use to buy at least $1,000.00 a month of vintage knives. So they lost a good customer. I simply don't deal with them anymore. Yeah, I have a 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet and the Warbeast Tomahawk. I teamed my Double Bit Hatchet with my Rodent 5, one of my Fav's. I also have (2) INFIMandus, which is the Ratmandu in the INFI Steel, I also have one in the SR101 a very good carbon blade steel, Its a 52100 done with Busse Technology. Great stuff. But I wanted something along the line of a Ray Mears Woidlore. I wanted to modify my GSN, But when I talked to Ekaine, She told me, Oh, by the way, a lovely lady. She said, that their not taking custom orders, She said, Infact they only do that once a year. And their still working on last years custom orderes, that night be finished by July. Hikes, I said, So I looked around, and found one in KnifeShippedFree, and Boil, Blap, Blame, I found a 3V Saber Grind with a Coyote Black Mountain G-10 Handle, So I bought it. Yeah it comes with a Square Bottom Leather Dangler Sheath which is a big plus. Like I meantiined, I already had the Tomahawk aching to be teamed up with a knife, I also have a Wicked Tough Saw that I will use with this Trio. But I also just bought my second Ka-Bar Kit. The first one was the BK-20 Bundok Bowie that sold with the BK-4 and the BK-5, This time I bought the BK-29 Moses Bowie. Both are 1/4" thick 1095 CroVan and around 11" blades. But the BK-29 Moses Bowie is a 1/4" shorter than the BK-20 Bundok Bowie. But the Moses Bowie comes with the BK-5, so I now have (3) BK-5's. I really like the BK-5, its a 8" lite knife, but I can do everything I can do with my BK-7. Infact, I teamed ine with my BK-15 a natural match. Yeah a few years ago, I bought a Blind Horse Bushcrafter. I had it made with a flat, polished canvas micarta handle, I also had some belly taken off, It came out a little piintier and that's excactly what I wanted, Infact, it l@@ks like a high priced Kephart. It's my Lil Jewel. Yeah, its in O1 and Scandi. So, you see, I wanted a poibtier tip and similar to the R M. I actually had a hard time deciding which one to get. I was researching between the GNS, the Gary Wines Knife and the Genesis. Yeah It is unless you buy all three, The decision was sort of hard, But I was able to buy it in 3V and that nice Coyote Black Mountain G-10 Handle which called out my name. Now, I think I got myself a good one and still a Lite Trio Carry. And Perfect Timing Too. For this up-coming mild weather start. Yeah, It will give me plenty of time to get use to this Trio Carry. So I will have enough practice time for my Solo Scouting Trips.,,.

Hello sir, would you recommend this knife or the Garberg?
@markbailey2981
@markbailey2981 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lanunochit, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 😀. At the time when I bought mine the garberg wasn't available to buy. But I have tried them since they have become popular and they are a great knife. It would depend purely on how much money I had to spend and the kind of work I was going to do with it. I like how the garberg has a full tang and also available in Carbon steel. But for the money you cant beat the bushcraft black. I think I paid about £38 for it and it has been a solid knife. Even though it has a rat tail tang I have still battened down wood for the fire or when carving and I never worry about it breaking. The steel is also a decent steel. It sharpens very easily and the edge lasts a good while. The handle is one of the most comfortable that I have used on a knife and due to the materials that it is made from it is still very grippy when wet. I did upgrade the sheath to a kydex sheath. But even the sheath that comes with them are decent. Like I said, the bushcraft black is a great knife for under £40. If you are on a budget and want a solid knife that is good for most jobs around camp then you wont go far wrong. But if you have a bit of extra money and want a full tang knife with a decent sheath, then the garberb is a quality knife. I don't know much about the handle, as I have little experience in using the knife. I think the price has also come down now, so that always makes things a bit easier. I f you could, I would try and visit somewhere that sells them and look at the side by side. I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed with either.......... I hope this helps, all the best, Mark :)

Isn't the black coating there to resist rust which is one of the drawbacks of carbon steel? By removing it, aren't you increasing the likelihood of rust?
@markbailey2981
@markbailey2981 6 жыл бұрын
Hi T Sizzle, many thanks for watching the video and taking the time to comment. Your quite right, the coating is there to protect the steel. But after use, the coating starts to wear in certain areas along the bevel, so I have always given the knife a coat of oil and treated it like any other carbon blade after use. I tend to sharpen them flat on a stone or strop and not put a micro bevel back on, hence the full length of the bevel now being silver. Nearly all of the older Bushcraft black's that I have seen and used pretty much end up this way. Nothing a drop of oil can't protect. Thanks again, have a great day, all the best, Mark.

I would like to see the Bushcraft Black without the coating. There are cases where the blade actually rusts underneath the coating. Might as well not have it at all. And it will be a better slicer without the coating also.

If you are looking for a full tang knife then the Garberg has that over the bushcraft black. I know they make the Garberg in a carbon steel version which is my main choice of steel. But if you only have £35 to spend, then the Bushcraft black is a great choice, but if you are looking for a more sturdy knife with a better sheath option, then I would opt for a Garberg. I don't own one, but I have used then in the past and they are a brilliant tool. Again they have come down in price, so it would be a good time to buy one. Thanks again, all the best, Mark :)
