Hi Brian, I'm glad you like them :) I was carving a few the other day whilst having a quick mug of tea. Thanks Sel. Yeah I'm sure the Mrs would love them. I was carving a few just before Christmas as gifts and they went down quite well. Opinel are great knives for carving. I used one for ages before getting the Mora knives. I still carry it in my kit for smaller detailing. I like the thicker handles on the Mora carving knifes for bigger jobs. I think they were called woodland spirit faces. The mushrooms are a lot easier to carve I bet. I did a few just before Christmas and left them out. It's nice to see them gone when you go back. Yeah, they are handy. You can get them in larger sizes as well. But if I need anything larger then I use the strops back at home. I wouldn't tend to carry anything bigger than that or perhaps use my belt. Thanks for watching TS, all the best, Mark.

I don't have any in the area where I live unfortunately or I just haven't spotted any. Yeah, its a great flint and steel tinder. It is the original tinder fungus. Thanks Nathanael!! Yeah, I can be a bit sloppy at times if I don't have my gear stored away in pouches. I have lost countless things over the years, plus it means I can load my pack up easier and swap thing out if needed. I used to have a Facebook page, but I haven't been on it in a few years, maybe when I get more free time I will do more with it. I tried to set up an Instagram account yesterday, but it won't connect to my laptop. I'm not very good with that kind of stuff, so I'm not sure what the problem is, but I will figure it out. Hi Terry, many thanks for watching. Any small saw like a silky or a Laplander type is good, but the saw I use is a Trend FFS/120 fold flush saw. The blade is very flexible which wasn't the reason why I bought it, but the saw is a nice size to carry in the set. Plus the teeth are tiny, so it leaves a nice clean cut without any saw marks in the piece that you are carving. I would leave a link to the saw, but you tube thinks it is spam and hides the reply. 👍.

Thank you for answering my question. I’ve already googled the saw, and it seems like a good one. I may buy one. I’m also looking at an Irvin brand of saw, for delicate tasks. Reviews are very good.

Hi Josh, I hope you are well. Yeah, nice easy project and they turn out OK however much time you put in. You should make some for your parents. I would say edge retention would go to the bushcraft black. It is easier to sharpen the carving knives because the steel is thinner and you get the edge like a razor with a couple passes over a strop. But after cutting through a few knots, then you find they need touching up again. But with the bushcraft black it is more of a robust knife. I'm sure the heat treat and steel will be different too. The black can be used hard and it still stays sharp. Different knives for different things. Thanks for watching Josh, all the best, Mark.

I carve and camp exclusively with the mora black and I completely concur with Mark . The scandi grind and edge retention is great. It holds up to knots and it's strong enough for reasonable battoning and other bush craft. I hand it to other people around the fire and say "try this" and there's a wow factor. For fine detail work.. of course grab the proper wood carving moras. If you only took one knife for the bush. She'll treat you right though. Thanks mark. great vid. Hi Pixie, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) Yeah, you should have no problem getting the Mora carving knives in the UK. Amazon and eBay usually have some good deals if you look on there. If you want to spend a bit more you could always look at Ben Orford's website who makes carving tools here in the UK. I find the Mora carving knives are easy to sharpen and they sharpen to a razors edge. So they are a good knife to learn with. The Scandi grind that they come with is easy to follow when sharpening. I tend to colour the edge with a permanent marker and use this as a reference to make sure that I do all of the edge and it is nice an even. Again, Ben Orford has some good sharpening videos here on You Tube. He recommends wet and dry paper in various grits to get the best out of the edge, then strop to finish the edge off. If you only strop a knife, you can run into the problem of turning a Scandi bevel into a convex or rounded bevel. So it pays to flatten them back out from time to time. As for knife choice out of the two Mora knives, it would depend on the size of work I am carving. Both have similar shaped blades, but they are different lengths. I tend to use the shorter blade for fine work and the longer blade for removing more wood. I hope this helps :) Happy Whittling, all the best, Mark :)

Hi snApp, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. If I was just going to start off and buying 1 knife, I would opt for the 105. The extra length of blade helps when carving wider wood and the tip is still thin enough for finer work. The 120 is good for when the bulk of the wood has been carved away and you need a knife for finer cuts. I did a video recently about carving kits and the different tools. Hi Lonelywolf2500 I tend to use a variety of woods. I often use Sycamore, willow or birch which grows in abundance to me locally, plus it is easy to carve. If you have it, Lime is another good wood to use. Often called Bass wood in the US, but I like how the willow looks once it has been waxed/oiled after drying. I suppose you could use most woods that you can harvest, as toxicity doesn't apply like carving spoons or bowls etc, but the wood I mentioned are softer and easier to cut.
