LOL! Yes, I know we have lighters, but sometimes they break or get soaked and don't work. I carry Bics in all of my gear, but I want to be able to light a fire without it if I need to.

So, like you, I have learned that carrying a striker along with the fire steel is not hard or inconvenient. With that in mind, it does not need 90 degree spine at all. I started using a "Light my Fire" Swedish Army fire steel that comes with a striker. Problem solved.

Completely agree, in Sweden the knife has predominantly been a carving tool, not a fire making tool. Somehow we always managed to make fires anyway.

@@JG-ke7gj 😁 So true , the American marketing on "bushcraft" is all based upon a few popular channels who make feathersticks and strike a fire rod in each vid . If the knife don't have a sharp spine they get all bent out of shape ...Not once have I ever started a fire in a real world situation with my knife. Many of these folks don't use knives enough to even need a sharp spine yet they demand it be a measure of quality??? You see makers like LT Wright who have wicked sharp spines selling that aspect as a marketing tool and people gobble it up😂 Its all good I love a free healthy market but some things are just silly from my point of view. When I'm cold out camping ya better believe I ain't making feathers and pencil lead sticks then pencil size sticks and fluff then maybe some fat wood to warm my butt ...No WAY !! Quick kindling and a lighter maybe even some lighter fluid to really get her burning .

@@Airik1111bibles The last part had me laughing out loud cause that's exactly how I have been making fires growing up in Sweden, its cold as hell and you can't get a fire started quickly enough. In fact the carving properties of a knife is way more important and a rounded spine helps with that. Not that I mind being able to strike a fire rod with the knife, its just a matter of what serves you most.

I do too. Even if they did, I have a hard time paying that much for it.

I agree. I fell for the internet hype and got a Garberg last year and I like it the least of all the Moras I own. It's thicker than it needs to be, heavier than it needs to be and it comes with a micro bevel that needs to be removed in order to get the benefit of a true scandi grind.

@@ulary - To be honest, any Mora will make a fine bushcraft knife. Choose the one that feels most comfortable in your hand. If you are just starting out the Mora Companion is a great choice. I own just about every Mora model available and I still use the Companion as a primary BC knife and it only costs about $14 here in the US.

Great questions! If the blade style is what is most important the 2000 will get the job done. I like the Kansbol's handle better than the 2000, but I have no complaints with the 2000's handle. I would probably not do any serious chopping with either of these knives, they are too light in my opinion.

LOL, yes the Kansbol is pretty new in this video, the Bushcraft Forest has spent most of its time in the drawer and I have used the 2000 quit a bit, but I do like to keep them clean.

+TheKimjoh560 Thanks for your comment, I'm glad this is what you were looking for. It seems they could sharpen the spine without too many extra steps. I will check out the Light My Fire. i usually buy rods with no handles and make my own from wood.

Free America The fire steel itself is good but its nothing special, its the scraper. Its got kind of of a special edge on it that makes it exceptional. Its not just 90 degree like most are. Imitating that on a knife spine would be awesome.

It is, the Kansbol is one of my all time favorites for fishing, hunting and camping.

Don't know. The intro music in the first 15 seconds is plenty loud as are the noises you make removing the knives from their sheaths & setting them on the table. All I can hear of your monologue is a very faint background mumbling. Perhaps i have selective hearing. Oh well. Could you honestly tell me if the newer Kansbol is really all that different or better than the 2000. I have the sickness & own far too many knives including several Moras. Any info is appreciated.

I'm sorry you are having a hard time hearing it. Bottom line: I dig the Kansbol. I like my 2000 but the Kansbol came with a 90 degree spine, and both knives are in the same price range. I guess it is just a matter of preference. If you can live without a 90 degree spine the 2000 should serve you just as well as the Kansbol. I like the Kansbol grip as well, but it would be hard to draw any significant difference between it and the 2000 other than the lanyard hole. Is it MUCH better than the 2000? Debatable, I think.

I will no doubt in time, cave to my illness & add both the Kansbol & Forest to my other Mora knives. I like my Garberg too, but I seem to carry the Kansbol the most.

Hi Johnny W, thanks for watching. The Bushcraft handle is fine if you are using a hammer grip but not so great if you are using it for chest lever cuts. I have not slipped past the guards on the other handles, but I'm not stabbing with these knives, generally. Of course it is easier to make a fire with matches but having the ability to use a ferro rod of your matches are soaked or your lighter is out of fluid is important. Redundancy in essential tools is something I look for.

That does sound like a perfect trio, Paulie. I haven't used the Mora hatchet yet, mostly because my Fiskars hatchet is doing great after many years of faithful service.

Thanks for your comment, Dutch Bushcraft! Most of my ferro rods did not come with a striker. I never thought about sparks from the ferro rod damaging the temper on the blade. That is worthy of some research, I think. I wonder how we could test that theory. I don't have a hardness tester. That is an intriguing problem to think about.

+Free America. I get mine from China and they all come with a striker. A carbon steel striker so you can also use it to make sparks with a flint. I did not test if it damages the blade and also have no tools to test this. I do know when machine sharpening a already tempered and hardened blade or even drilling it they cool it down all the time worried about the heat messing with the temper. So I just wonder what a 3000 degrees spark will do to the temper of the blade? I do think it's an interesting thing to maybe get investigated. We can only hope that some person with the test facility sees this and decides to test it for us ;)

I like the Kansbol better for skinning and processing, especially on small game like squirrels and rabbits. The Garberg is still a great camping knife and I really like that I can put a lanyard on it. I wish Mora would have more lanyard options on their knives.

I understand why people do it, but I carry a hatchet too. I suppose if you were down to just your knife you may be forced to do it, but I haven't been forced yet.

I'm a bit lazy, and old, avoiding weight at all costs, except for the sleeping bag and the mattress ;). So, I use a Mora or Hultafors knife in combo with a Tajima folding saw, great little combo to cut almost anything.

Try using an axe in the snow with no base.
