Mora Kansbol SNAPS IN HALF | Is Full Tang The Only Way To Go?

Full tang or partial tang? That is the question and the underlying theme of this video. My Morakniv Kansbol couldn’t handle batoning through a tough spruce log.
On the plus side… I now know first hand how easily partial tang knives can break. Life (and knife) experience is always a good takeaway.

You are correct. If you haven’t noticed… this is called the Hard On Gear Channel. Not the “super smart guy who uses his tools appropriately” channel. Not sure what you expected 🤔

Knife abuse. The Morakniv 2000 and now the Kansbol has been the standard issue knife for the Swedish army for over two decades. It’s a fantastic knife

That’s fair. Good thing this is the Hard On Gear Channel and I’m not marketing myself as a genius. It’s a fantastic knife and I wanted to see how far I could push it. Now I know, and so does everyone else who doesn’t have enough first hand experience breaking knives. Thanks for the info and the comment.

The blade didn’t fail you failed the blade! If you use any tools beyond their design capabilities they will break! That “battening ” was clearly a job for an axe which would have been the correct tool for the job!

No knives should ever baton full tang or not. A knife is for cutting and slicing. You wouldn’t brush your tooth with a horse brush. Right tool for the right job.

I've noticed that the tang of the Kansbol looks jagged, same for the tang on the 2000. However I have seen older pics online of the tang of the Mora 2000 being a straight tang, similar to how the Companion and Companion HD tangs are. Maybe the jagged tang of the Kansbol, 2000 will go back to a straight tang. I've noticed the same for the Bushcraft Black; was a straight tang, now jagged from recent pics.

You can fix it. Grind the sharp part of the blade off on the back half. Split the handle with a hacksaw. Epoxy the blade in between the two handle pieces. Let it cure then drill a couple of holes and put pins in it. You will have a FrankenEldris.

Probably the strongest partial stick tang budget knife out there is the Hultafors GK. Second the Mora Robust. Even JoeX could not break them. The Kansbol, Mora 2000 and Mora Forester have the same slicing blade. Great as an outdoor food prep knife. I prefer the Condor Terrasaur over the Mora Garberg. For a long knife/small machete I prefer the Tramontina Latin machete with the 10" blade.

I’ve got a Condor Terrasaur but I like the grind on the Moras much better. I’ll definitely give it some more opportunities to prove itself this winter. Thanks for the info and the suggestions 🤙

ever they a hatchet ? I am not being rude just have lots ask me what is best to chop wood.. I always say AXE or Hatchet

Absolutely no question there. Axes and superior chopping tools. One of the big reasons why people (myself included) use knives to baton is because we don’t always get to decide what we have on us when an emergency situation comes up. If I only have a knife on me, I want to know that I’m confident with that tool, even if it’s less optimal. I won’t always have access to an axe, but I’ll just about always have a knife or two on me. This knife isn’t the best choice, but I wanted to find its limits, and now I know them.

What worries me more than the tang of the Mora, is the CRKT handle. I looks like it is pinned but it isn't? You could epoxy some rods in the holes.

Yup, the design is definitely misleading from first glance. I used para cord and it’s actually quite functional again. The epoxy is a good idea I’ll keep stored for next time or if my fix ever fails 👌

Mora makes a lot of plastic handle/stick tang knives that are great for battoning. The robust and companion had in particular. This is n especially thin blade, made to be more slicey. Not good for this type of task, as we can see

If you paracord that handle, you can take out the center strand and the Paracord will lay flatter.

😂 I have a few Mora’s but I have never tested them. There reputation and price make them easy to buy as backups and through in the pack and truck. I’m surprised you don’t break more knifes !

I’ve probably got more Moras than anything just because of how many are randomly kicking around my bags, vehicle, drawers, etc. Don’t worry my friend… I have the urge to test out the rest of my non full tang knives now. I have a feeling more breakages are coming your way.

Yeah, don't baton with a Morakniv. Totally the wrong edge grind and type of knife to be doing such with. I prefer the Mora2000, it's the precursor to kansbol, same basic blade shape but with a mirror finish. The spine is rounded for comfortable thumb resting and it has a much more comfortable handle. Best in camp knife I ever found. They changed the rat tang on these blades a while back, while changing the manufacturing process, adding some indentations that didn't used to be there. You can find pictures of the blade tangs before and after the change. The older Mora2000 is a little stronger.

Gotcha, thanks for the info 👌 I definitely just wanted to fuck around and find out to see what I could get away with. Nothing about the Kansbol screams “aggressively baton firewood with me!” But I just had to find out for myself I guess 🤷‍♂️

Have you seen the new condor terrachete? I think that's gonna be my next buy. Right now I use a coldsteel tanto machete. I really love my BPS adventurer it's better then my Garberg in many ways.

YES, that thing looks so deadly. The BPS adventurer is new to me though. More traditional than my typical tastes, but I dig it.

@@HardOnGearChannel I have the terrachete it’s outstanding. It’s about as close to the perfect design for my use as I think you can get with a production cutlery. Really if I changed anything it wouldn’t be a machete anymore it would be the jungolo. I love that one but it’s over $100 and it only has a right hand sheath. The terrachete can be changed to any carry. The BPS adventurer is way above it price. I promise it will change your mind once you use it. In all my years with knives the BPS was the best edge I’ve ever seen on a knife. The steel is 1066 which is Russian spring steel like our 5160. It’s my favorite hard use knife.

I have lot's of knives and just about every kind of Mora and the Robust is one of my favorite knives. It is an underrated beast. They were less than $15 when I bought mine. Every time I hear one of these guys that think more $ spent equals more quality saying "you get what you pay for", I think about the Robust and how sometimes you get more.

I’ve got one, as well as a Garberg. They are ungodly tough… but it was much more fun to mess around with the Kansbol and see how it would hold up 🤷‍♂️

The correct answer to an engineering question is always "It depends". Note that $5 kitchen knives often have full tang construction, but that doesn't mean that they are suitable for batoning. That being said, it would be nice if Mora strengthened the tang of the Kansbol slightly. But Mora makes plenty of other models. To fix the ChanceInHell, I would put narrow pins (such as cut off nails) in the holes and fill with epoxy.

Valid points! Thanks for the epoxy suggestion as well. I’ll keep that in mind for next time. I managed to fix it up with some light paracord and electrical tape and it’s going strong again 🤙

@@HardOnGearChannel The best "pins" would be screws (preferably stainless) because the epoxy can hold on to them much better. Be sure to de-grease with brake cleaner.

Stainless steel is more brittle too. I think the Kansbol only comes in Stainless. Its possible a Mora carbon steel rat tail is tougher

I've got a Companion and a Hultifors Heavy Duty hanging around here. I think the Mora is in my big toolbox. The Hultifors might be in my pack. Both are cheap knives that are good enough to keep somewhere when you need a sharp and pointy tool. I've gifted a few Moras and Hultifors in the past because they're a good starter knife, and handy in the kitchen or garden. My usual fixed-blade is a Cudeman MT-5, or my Gerber Strongarm. Both full-tang knives. I just had a quick think and yep, other than a couple of wood carving knives and the Companion and HD Hultifors, all my other fixed blades are full-tang, from my 12-inch pig-sticker, right down my little caping knife.

@@HardOnGearChannel Try the Hultifors. It's a partial tang knife much the same style as a Companion but a little rougher around the edges. Good knives though. I have a soft spot for Cudeman. When I realised I didn't have any dedicated camp knives after living in the city for a while, I bought the MT-5. Then I fell down the rabbit-hole, collecting knives I might need to use sometime in the bush, or a knife with an interesting lock, or different steel. Or in the case of the Opinels, buying one of every size in stainless and carbon. I even bought the Opinel No13 because it was too funny to not buy one and check it out. What a monster folder!

@@HardOnGearChannel Cudeman is Spanish and are great knives. Hultafors is the other Swedish budget knife brand mostly used by craftsman. The GK being their strongest model. I use the GK as my student model and did not see one break yet nor did I see a video of one breaking.

I Could bet 150$ if the marbles bowie I batoned with was rat tanged it would have snapped that sucker almost twisted 50 degrees from the handle and kept going through the wood with no after damage lol 5 bucks for a beast needed handle work though! That sucks that it broke though! Cheers bro try heating up the Garber sheathe and squish it with gloves on carefully going around the sheathe?

I’d never baton with my Kansbol. It’s more of a kitchen knife/food preparation knife for me. I beat the snot out of my Companion HD and that’s going strong. I keep expecting it to break but it doesn’t. If I broke my Kansbol, I’d be upset, that’s $90AU, my Companion was $40. Not as bad. I don’t get why you were using your Kansbol to baton when you have a Garberg. I’m all for batoning, but you have to use the right knives.

Wise words. Doing heavy batoning with the Kansbol is not that smart... Companion HD and Pro Robust are better options. Still, for making a fire splitting thick wood is totally BS in my opinion. It's just an internet fad made by people like Nutnfancy many years ago. You don't need to split logs to make a fire. Use the brain, we are humans not monkeys.

You’re absolutely on the ball* with all of that. Keep in mind that my goal with the “Hard On Gear” channel is partially to fuck around and find out by doing things that aren’t perfect or optimal. I’ve got a Garberg, a Robust, Companion HD’s, but I wanted to use the Kansbol and see what I could get away with-for my benefit and for* those who truly don’t know better.

It was a good explanation of what not to do. The bigger knife handle coming off was bad luck. I baton with my knives but I guess I’ve been lucky. I’d spew if my handle broke, on any knife. I tend not to bash the handle with my baton, I do sometimes but not regularly. I love the name of your channel too.

Thanks for the link. I see his points, but he was so sold on his point of view and unwilling to see the other side that I take what he says with a grain a salt. It’s a good trick to add to the toolbox though 👌 My concern is how much extra time it takes to use that method. If I’m fighting against the daylight and temperatures are dropping, I’m quite sure knife batoning will be faster and more efficient for collecting firewood. One just has to ensure he has the proper tool. Plenty of high level and super experienced pure bushcraft experts teach batoning-Just don’t do it with a fucking Mora Kansbol.

@@HardOnGearChannel Batoning is fine. But you were batoning a log sized piece there. No wonder it broke. You don't need to do that to start a fire. Also, a cheapo machete can be used for splitting wood also. As is said before, the Swedish army gives the Mora 2000 / Kansbol to their recruits. Split wood, but use your mind doing so. Common sense. Not idiot sense.

If you want to split the size you were splitting. Get an axe. Never seen Cody Lundin splitting large wood with his Mora #1. Common sense is the expression here.

Well an experienced user of knifes would chose something else to try to batton through that much wood. It is obvious that the Kansbol is a finer blade, not at all made for splitting wood. The Kansbol is a very nice knife with a screaming sharp blade right out of the box, a knife that is hard to beat when hunting, slicing things, food prepping, carving and stuff like that. Choose another tool for slitting logs.

I've seen plenty of guy's baton with this knife without issues. I wouldn't baton with it personally. But all I can say, you truelly are rough on gear🤣🤣

This is the Hard On Gear channel dude… not the “I’m a genius and have it all figured out” channel. I’m fucking around, learning, and experimenting so I can experience this stuff first hand. Now I know and understand more thoroughly (through feel) how aggressive you can be with less sturdy knives doing this kind of stuff. Waay to heavy! A knife works just fine. Not pure slicers like this knife of course. But any full tang knife and every other mora handles batoning just fine. Also much safer than swinging an axe

Original kukri's from Nepal and Parangs in South East Asia are mostly stick tang. Most medieval swords are also stick tang. Gladius also. As most swords were. If you think that full width tang is a must, then you have to learn a thing or two.
