I so appreciate that you made this video out in the woods. It was so nice to dont have to listen to traffic sounds! Yes, I have a no 2, too, and its a good knife! Awesome feather stick and nice pot holder! Thank you for doing another Mora Kniv Måndag :) Take care my brother in Bushcraft! /Ulrica

Gullrica Thank you, Ulrica! I am sorry about the previous traffic sounds. At times, when I couldn't get out into the woods, I tried doing the videos in the yard but it's too close to a major highway. I love the Morakniv Classics! Thank you for the kind words and thank you for writing me back in Swedish! Great to hear from you! I found your email that I missed and will reply as soon as I can. Its been a very busy couple of days. Talk with you again soon, Ulrica! -Dave

Luv Mora Mondays! Cool functional mods to the knife, and I like it's neck carry capability. Beautiful Kydex sheath, I'll remember your friend's name who makes 'em. But the leather sheath is great. I got in the Mora Light My Fire and can't wait to get it out, maybe do a video. The bright green is different, I like it. I want to do a feather stick (great instructional Dave on making them, best I've seen on holding, turning, cutting angle and pressure, etc) video and light it like you did with the built in ferro rod. Hey I'm excited brother. OK I've rambled enough. Take care Dave! ~John

My wife says I have a knife problem and you are not helping, LOL so far all the blades reviewed by you have have been outstanding. My condor kephart has been a great 18 century camp knife and since I shoot flintlock rifle trimming cotton patch and round ball it has just the right length for safe cutting. the Mora 2000 all around great the handle is grippy and feels secure in the hand. I ordered a Mora # 2 so like a cat on a hot tin roof I am waiting for that one to come in. So far all the knifes that I get I use them for about two weeks then I comment . Keep up the good work. my friend !

Hi David my Mora Classic #2 came in now I own 7 Mora knifes so I was holding back on purchasing the Mora classic #2 because I thought to myself “That red birch handle would be the one that I cut my hand on” LOL. But I went ahead and pulled the trigger for a whopping 14.00 dollars, well after a week of using it I could not be happier the handle know matter how you hold it just fits great in the human hand. The handle has been no problem at all and I love that old school look no bells and whistle just a very good working knife I will pare this with either my 8 inch Sami knife from Rageweed forge or my Becker BK2. Thanks brother take care.

Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your excellent comment, Don! Thats great to hear about your Mora #2! Yes, the handle looks deceiving but it's incredibly comfortable in all grips. I love the price and how it fits in the hand. IMHO, the Classic #1 fits even better in the hand for certain carving tasks, due to it's smaller size. Sounds like and excellent knife pairing you have there, my friend! -Dave

I love your channel for all the knowledge as well as for your friendly, generous tone. Thank you! I like this Mora, but I find the way that the blade comes all the way to the handle (with a sharp corner) a little dangerous for the index finger. I wish that there were a choil or a small finger guard. Also, mine does not stay too securely in its plastic sheath. And finally, have you had rust issues? Although I have created a patina with apple cider vinegar, I find that rust develops quickly (even without outdoor use!) down at the end of the blade where it meets the handle. Ah, well, it is an inexpensive knife after all. Still, as you say, it is ideal for carving and feather-sticks.
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 8 жыл бұрын
+arcajour Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your very nice comment, my friend! I really appreciate that! I actually prefer the Classic handles. I am not a big fan of finger guards or choils, as I prefer the old style. The ranger band on my handle keeps it held into place in the leather sheath in the video. I also never had a problem with the plastic sheaths. The retention isn't great, but I have never lost a Mora Classic in the woods (and I have many). I also like how the Classics easily "drop" into the factory leather sheaths. I also don't have many rust issues. I always wipe my carbon steel blades before putting them back into their sheaths. I do find that the patina works decently. If I do get spots of rust, I use my Lansky eraser block to get them off. -Dave

Say Heah Dave, Had I known this befor, Actually I did know the Mora Classic #2 was bigger than the Classic #1. But I didn't realize the Mora 510 was a identical blade to the Classic #1. But there really isn't a problem, because the cost of Mora's are so reasonable that I will be ordering the Classic #2 and with the Stainless Steel, I really like a good tempered 12c27 Stainless Steel. I'm also getting the Mora Garber because it's a Full Tang. I like making sets and combos, I wanted to make a Nessmuk Trio, I already have a identical copy of his double bit hatchet, mine is the 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet, I got a super deal on a Rough Rider Moose Pattern Slipjoint Pocket so I got two, But the Rough Rider makes their blade the same as a Trapper but on each ends that's why the name Moose. I found the Nessmuk Knife, But I did go out with a very Lite Trio earlier today, I took my Mora Forest Exclusive #277, with the 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet and I took the Bacho Laplander since it's not even broken in yet, I had a great lunch, I made a spicy tomato noodle with Italian spicy sausage and coffee, a good cigar and it doesn't get any better. Yeah there is something about a Mora. At first I thought because of their slender blades that they wouldn't last just from sharpening them. But then I saw Cody Londin Mora Classic #1 and yes it looked worn down alot, But he used that same knife since 1991-2, and he still is using it. Not bad. F.Y.I. Anybody that thinks the Ckassic #1 handle is too slippery, The Mora 510 has a solid plastic handle that I actually like how good it feels in your hand and the blades are identical. Kewl Beanz, David, Job well done.

Say Heah Dave, Today I was matching my brand new Battle Horse Attitude which I had modified "My Way" I had mine slightly curved, The drop point lowered so it looks like some of those higher end knife, and my Battle Horse Attitude now is, I also had a higher scandi grind done to it, Oh a white handle with blue liners, Get this, they made my square bottom leather dangler sheat black and it's a perfect match. It also is a perfect match with my smaller Himalayan Imports M-43 Khukuri both have black sheaths, I'm stoked, the pair is Simply TiT's, Beautiful, I can very easily wear the Mora 510 as a match (color) God is Always Good. and Good Always is God.

Mora Companion is my first knife and only knife I've bought since I started bush craft 2 years ago. When it was new, I was amazed at how long it could hold an edge and how little sharpening it took to put an edge back on it. But, now the opposite is true... takes a lot to put an edge on it and it's gone again quickly. I'm sure the grind is way off after these 2 years of hand sharpening. I just noticed the other day that the plastic sheath no longer grabs the knife. It just lays in there, no retention at all. I bought a Lansky Sharpening System and sent it back to Amazon the same night. There were multiple problems with this poorly made system. I've been considering one of those belt sander type sharpeners. Pretty expensive though. Will a $100 get a decent system? I don't need a razors edge all the time. A durable working edge is what I'd like... like what I experienced with this knife when I first got it. I guess I didn't mention it, but over the last 2 years, I've really used my Mora a ridiculous amount. Thanks, Dave!
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 9 жыл бұрын
David West Hi David! Interesting. My Mora Companion is a bit older and I don't seem to have the same problem. As you mentioned, the grind could possibly be off, but it shouldn't be too tough to get a scandi edge back. As far as the plastic sheath retention, that is very typical. They absolutely wear over time. There are some mods you can do to the sheath to better retain the knife. When I was using the Mora plastic sheaths, I used a small piece of paracord with a slip knot and held the knife in that way kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gdiBdqar2dG-fYU.html. There are others who also place duct tape on the inside of the sheath to widen the opening. There are also places, like the pathfinder store or wildernesskydex on ebay, where you can get sheaths for your companion. I really don't think you need to spend $100 for a decent system for a Mora/Scandinavian grind knife. I use DMT Diafold diamond sharpeners, a small ceramic rod and a leather strop kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gKedgat-r7iypqc.html. And most of the time, I only need to strop my Moras to bring them back. I think this system may work for you. The amount of hard use really shouldn't be an issue in keep in sharp. Give a try with the sheath retention vid and sharpening video. If these do not work, the heat treatment may be a bit off, possibly, although that is not very common with Moras. You could always send it to me if you like and I can see what I can do (although I am no expert) or you could always just buy a new Mora Companion for under $20. Keep me posted, my friend! -Dave

Say Heah Dave, A while ago I asked my friend that has a beautiful Titanium 10 speed bicycle, Anyhow it's so lite it's amazing, I asked him if he had any intertubes, because the wheels are so thin, He gave me one, So I cut a piece off and it fits my Mora Classic #1 great, I like it better than notching the handle and the fit and feel is great. Oh I attached my Classic to my Bokor Black Rold and it looks great, I put a belt loop on that very dangerously loose sheath, But that Classic #1 tightened the handle strap that was a little loose, Now not only do I have two good knives, But it matches even the colors, The Liners red and so is the handle. I'll go out for a Afternoon Delight a hot cup of coffee on the open fire and a baked potato beats Mc Dee's scenery any day and be back in time to watch the Tribe Beat the Cub's Go Tribe !!!

That is interesting, al. Personally, I have never had a problem with the edge of the Mora Classics and I've owned several. However, I have heard of people finding the scandi grind to be a bit brittle. I am not a purist so I don't mind a secondary micro bevel on my Mora knives. I do find that it does not affect performance and gives the edge a bit of strength. Thank you for watching, my friend! -Dave

+Alan Hoyt Hey, thank you for the sub, my friend! I really appreciate that! I love the Mora Classic No 2! Such an awesome knife. I must admit, I am a bit partial to the Mora Classic No 1, but the No 2 is one of my very favorite knives. I love everything about the Mora Classics. Thank you for the kind words and I will check out your channel, as well! -Dave

I've got one of these. I seem to remember you using one of the Mora's to throw sparks off of flint. I haven't been able to throw a single spark off of it. Any tips?
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've used the carbon steel on many Mora knives for flint and steel fires. Just a couple of dumb questions...are you using actual flint or chert or obsidian? Are your rock edges' sharp enough to remove the carbon steel to create the sparks? I've also found that striking the 'corner' of the spine works really well, if that makes sense. Let me know and keep me posted, Christian. I have found Mora's carbon steel to be excellent for striking sparks. -Dave

I'm using a two different arrowheads, one is quartz and the other is an opaque green that flakes easier than quartz but not as easily as obsidian. I just sharpened my arrowheads and went at it again extra vigorously. I got sparks! You're right, a sharp stone is key and I seem to have to strike a lot harder than normal. I've been using a ground down file up until now. It creates slightly better sparks (they make a sizzling sound) a lot easier. With the mora I have to really strike hard to get the good sparks and that wears out my flint quickly. Where I am sparkable stones are in short supply which is why I purchase arrowheads as flint so I think that the mora will only get used for this as a last resort. Thanks for the extra encouragement, I was about to write off the mora as a striker.

HighCarbonSteel Love Realized that I worded that strangely. The Mora does make sparks but my ground down file makes better sparks easier without tearing through my Flint.

Since you like high carbon so much i thought i would ask you about a high carbon blade. I am looking for a high carbon blade no bigger than 3inches and i want it to lite fire with using the spine for flint and steel so hardness should be 58/59. Thanks.

Say Heah Dave, Geez the Sheath is alot more than the knife, But I like it, But the way I set mine up, The Classic is very secure, I can also make a loop to further secure it, Laters Dave, Go Tribe !!! Oh, my sheath fits the Mora similar to that sheath with the ferro rod, except I attached it to my handle strap.

HighCarbonSteel Love Sometimes when I see Vintage Mora or others knifes for sale, I could cry.. I get remembered of all the knifes I have lost over the years.. When I find one to day, I collect them :) Found some really rusty ones. But they come home with me. :)

Seriously Dave, You start too high on your Ferro rids, That will waist or shape your Ferro Rod different than if you learn to use it closer to the tip, Actually our friend Ulrica talks about how she uses hers.

But to each his own !!! Also Mors Kochanski puts a time on everything even making feathers, He could make feathers holding the wood straight a head, figures the wood grain then zip, boom bumm he's done.

+HighCarbonSteel Love To each his own, Just trying to be friends, I'm.also stoked, I just got my Battle Horse Attitude which I had it made my way, I asked to put a slight curve on mine, then I had them grind a higher scandi grind, I also like the newer Drop points, I had mine lowered too, Oh and a white handle with blue liners. It should match my smaller Himalayan Imports M-43 it also has a White bone handle. But I also love my Mora's as my neck knives, I think with my new combo, I'm thinking of using my Mira Forest Exclusive #277, But either my 510 or my Classic #1 would be great too. Ofcourse I wouldn't need any other kind of chopper with my whities, just my Corona or any of my folding saws, I also like my Wooden handle Fisksrs, it's pretty good too. So see, I just like talking one of my passions with you.

Yeah, I got it at Home Depot, But I don't see them any more, I have a friend that could carve things into handle, It's the Power Teath, But I think I'll just leave it plain with maybe just Paul'ie carved nicely into it. It's a pretty good saw too. If I darken it with some wood stain, I could make a nice Trio using my 2Hawks Warbeast Tomahawk with three sharp edges my Handmade Mora and tge Saw, I bet it would be a nice looking matching set.
Why the Mora Classic is still so popular. A timeless classic indeed!
