With a floating floyd rose w locking headstock you can take back plate off guitar unscrew the 2 bolts and get super low, use a heavier gauge string then re-level the tremolo til you're at the tuning you want. Most all Old school dm bands did this. We we're super low never used 7 strings. Listen to mortician hacked up for barbeque. All 6 string w 5 string bass.

C# is a overlooked tuning used by some of the greats (bolt thrower, suffocation, dying fetus...) Overall D was absolutely the most common tuning due to it being used by Death. But the diversity of tuning alone proves what you said makes no sense lol. Most bands did not tune as low as mortician hahahaha. Mortician doesnt need a 7 string because they dont play solos, the reason for the 7 string is to still have the high E string. Trey Az used 7 string to be able to play any old solo or song on the same guitar. In Ab tuning. Which could not be achieved with a 6 string tuned to Ab where you lose the highest string.
