This was a VERY expensive mistake. There is almost certainly NOTHING the new owner can do about it. It's a 50 year old car. That is probably the most important point. If you are buying an RV or a classic car or a motorcycle or a boat, there is no lemon law, there is no implied warranty, there is no warranty of merchantability, there is no liability and there is almost certainly no liability for the dealer.

Hi. Boils down to greed and money. 1. Private seller knows the car , what is right and what is wrong 2. Consignment seller does not give a @#$@ - he has the car for free, stocks and pretty up his yard and will make money for talking - does not care , he will hide behind the fact it is not his car and does not know anything about it except what the owner said ( or told him to say ) 3. Pro car yard that owns outright ( or has the short term free loan from his lender ) just wants it of the lot and make $$$ ASAP Is there no accountability ???, i am sure there are enough honest car dealers out there, but like most things in life the small majority that create most of the trouble ruin it for the others. Yeah some cars are lemons and the current person stuck with it has a choice, make a big loss, try and repair ( bodge it up ) , flip and pass the hot potato to some one else. I normally privately sell my daily driver every 5 years, and i specifically make the add as follows General Info Service history - copy of all invoices and prior rego papers in my possession and also from prior owners if i have info Good Points Bad Points Firstly i cant really lie over such a big $$$ sale ( remember houses are the most expensive items then cars in a persons life ) and secondly i sell the car to some guy who gets annoyed and comes back not happy ( violent ) But yeah, drive the car around the block, if your happy with that 2 minute test, then say your serious and take if for at least a 10-15 min drive, if the seller wont allow it ( with them in the car ) then just walk away. Some sellers even drive the car and bay it and know how to drive it without showing any faults - in there local area they even know which roads and potholes to avoid for in car noise or bad handling eg tight corner and the car squeals or you have to cut 80% of the speed to exit the corner in the same lane - and i am not talking speeding , it happens at even lest than posted street sign limits Regards George

Probably a mix of old and newer repairs. Once had a corvair in a restoration shop i worked at, guy wanted it restored for his father who bought it new. Once the paint started coming off we found the left side of the front end was literally hacked together with scraps of metal and a poorly refit piece cut off another wrecked car. His dad told him the car wasn't worth restoring as he was driving when the car was crashed and it was never right after the accident. At least he was honest about it. The amount of horrific work I saw there, everything from a "Rebuilt" 383 dodge with the most worn out oil pump I have ever seen to a "Mint" Willy's jeep with all new brake lines, not a single one had so much as a flare on the end, leaving it without brakes. The car business is a horror show, especially with classics like muscle cars and VW bugs and busses.

In a previous career, I was doing air-cooled VW repair. It was amazing how many parents would buy their kids a "cute little bug" only to discover that under the pretty paint & behind the mag wheels was a Frankenstein nightmare of chop, hack, & jerry rigging. So, they dropped a couple-three grand on the car that ended up needing that much *or more* in repairs to make them truly road-worthy/safe for their spawn. We used to provide a reasonably priced inspection service to prevent someone from getting shafted by sketchy flippers.

Just a tip, modern components do not repair problem/damaged components. The original steering would steer the car safely if there was not other problems. I have seen many attempts to address problems from damage in one area with more modern design components in another area. This is going about it all wrong. The actual problem/damage must be corrected first. Then if you want to update the driving performance, go ahead. Don't try to mask the real problem with upgrades.

I've had over 245 cars. I considered myself to be pretty car savvy until I worked in a body shop for 10 years. A lot of frame shops are disappearing. Because people no longer straighten frames. Because insurance companies won't pay for that kind of work. Insurance companies will total cars for being keyed. Insurance companies want you to buy a new car, because they want you to pay for new financing, and higher insurance rates. Body men can be very talented. They can cut sections of a car out and replace them. Even the seam sealer looks like it's factory? You can order front clips, rear clips, pillar sections, cabs, beds, and quarter panels, from dismantlers. The quad cab Duramax valued at $28,000 has been totaled. The Body Shop buys the totaled vehicle for $1500. For $3,700 in parts the truck is torn to the frame and reassembled with parts from an auto dismantler. That truck sales with a salvaged title for $18000. This takes up slack time in the shop. Sometimes we would even repair bad work done by other body shops. Shops that claim they use all OEM parts. There are honest body shops out there. You have to know what you're looking at. Floor panels should be put in with a flanger. Not all unibody cars are created equal. The Mustangs were notorious for having tiny subframes, compared to Chevrolet Camaro subframes. The shock towers on the early Mustangs needed bracing, so did the Falcons. The frame rails on the Mustang we were looking at were uneven in height, and judging by the elongated frame holes, the body had been diamond. The right hand A-pillar must have been bent back so far that bent metal in the lower part of the A-pillar had to be cut out, the remaining part of the pillar heated up with a torch and pulled forward, so you had something to hang the door on, and then reinforced, Which is probably where you lost your vent holes. Choppy. Hard to hang sheet metal on a rhombus. Sometimes it looks straight from the outside. But the inner wheel wells are off. The left front wheel well is arriving a little early. The car must have been hit in the right front. I have seen some beautiful body work. You can't help but wonder what's underneath it? There's nothing like a nice rack!

Most classic car lots today only sell this type of car. There are still a few highly reputable dealers around but they're few and far between. I've actually been asked to leave by several dealers over the years when I went with a friend to inspect a car for them! They hate people like us that know what they're actually looking at. When they see me inchworming my way around & under the car they usually freak out. I've seen several $50k cars with worse issues than this car. Like others have said, try & buy your classics from close friends or family where the entire history of the car is known or buy a unrestored car that has never been butchered. People should also consider barn finds as long as the barn was dry. I've bought several cars that way cheap, Don't be afraid of dirt & bird poo! The car might smell bad but it's also honest.

A car has a life expectancy from the manufacturer of around 10-12 years. The reality is these classics that we love have been cheating the scrap man for decades. It's no wonder that so many of them are little more than nicely painted parts donors. It's too easy to get caught out when you don't know what you're looking at. The more time you spend around classics the more you can start to tell the difference between a car that is honest and one that isn't.

I was also on this, and his brother told him after taking one glance at an 87 911, "Don't buy it, this thing's a rat." And the car looked nice. But, when his brother pointed things out, it didn't look as nice. His brother later told us he figured that the car had been wrecked and that whomever had fixed it wanted to cover it up. Said he noticed what looked like a slight bend to the car. Told us later he felt the frame, and it didn't feel right. Dude wanted 25k for that car. My friend's brother said it wasn't worth 2500, because it would probably cost between 10-15k AT least to fix.

Uncle Tony is the best! He actually imparts knowledge, he's a teacher. The other guys are entertainers. They tend to leave out the stuff you want to know. They're skimpy with the info and long on personality and opinion. Mostly it's stuff that you already know. These tires are flat (they are?). You get to meet their dog (he seems nice). So I ended up buying a barn find 66 GTO for 15k and put 40k into a frame off restoration. Whatever parts they took off, I replaced them with new from Ames. Got it back in about 9 months and no problems with it.

As a mechanic, doing pre-purchase inspections for customers, I've found body repairs that weren't on Carfax. Me: "Been hit, right front." Customer: "Carfax is clean, it's never been hit." Me: "See that fender over there? The sticker with the VIN? See how the right fender doesn't have that? Only one way that happens." Customer: "But... Carfax." If you pay out of pocket and don't go through insurance, it doesn't go on Carfax, so even on newer cars, ALWAYS GET IT CHECKED OUT.

Seems like your consumer protection law is not too good? A guy I worked for bought an Edsel convertible off eBay out of Canada. The door flew open the first time he tried to drive it. Where the fenders were supposed to be bolted on had been welded to the frame as part of shoddy rust repair. Imagine trying to get restitution from a seller out of country... To add insult to injury, I had a buddy one county over with a completely solid example for less money.

Sad thing is. My Aunt bought a 67 Mustang brand new. In the late 70's she had the tires balanced at a shop. Driving the car home, the right side front wheel came off. (Yes she wasn't a bright driver, every car she owned she would drive until the brakes fell off the car, then tell my Dad something is wrong with the brakes) Anyways something as simple as that wheel coming off, the car never drove straight again. Well until my cousin ran it through a shallow ditch and the frame had to be straightened. Just shows how easy it was to warp the frame on these cars.

Attorney Steve Lehto spells it out...the dealers can LIE to you and tell you ANYTHING with impunity in almost every state. When you sign the papers, unless it is stated within the "4-corners" of the sales agreement, anything they told you means NOTHING WHATSOEVER. They can tell you it's 1-owner and in perfect shape and never been in an accident......doesn't matter unless it is in the sales agreement. Cars are sold AS-IS unless a warranty is indicated in the sales agreement (OR purchased separately, of course). BE WARY!

Many years ago I almost bought a 1964 Impala convertible that was basically the same thing. Drove it, put it up on a rack and walked away. Pay attention to the little things and keep your eye on the ball. The point is to buy a good car, not a shiny POS. If you don't know, take it to someone, you trust, that does know. The classic car market is very hot. When something is selling and in demand the scammers come out to play. Too many guys trying to turn a quick buck. Worst part is the cars are normally as is where is. Once you hand over the cash it is yours regardless of what is hiding under that nice resale red paint job.

I got a hold of one like that, a 78 Dodge 4 door Aspen. Not a good car new, but this one.. So it's worse than just pulling really hard to one side. As the car goes over bumps, and loads and unloads the springs, it pulls even harder, and then doesn't pull at all. So you're going down the road and the car is floating in a big circle, up and down and left and right. At about 50 mph it got pretty scary. You got kinda used to it, but I got rid of it with a quickness. I gave it to my mom to give to a semi-homeless guy that she had given a job to, so he could drive to work. It was a minimum wage janitor job so it wasn't like he could afford anything. But he never complained that I heard, and was apparently really grateful. I still feel kind of bad about that, as the car needed either the crusher or a frame man, but fixed, it wouldn't have been worth $600. I hope he didn't get hurt in it and got rid of it as soon as he could.
