Lyrics, tempo, topic and good music.
These are the ingredients that make a fine calypso, and the greatness of the legendary calypsonian Leroy Caliste, the Black Stalin, is that he excels at all of these..
Many of today's singers can master some of these, for example, either lyrics and topic or tune and music, but few can incorporate them all in one calypso like the masters of the artform.
Black Stalin is a master of the artform, and here is a classic example of his work.
This is Stalin's tuneful commentary on the struggle of Africans for freedom and liberty over the centuries

I'm a black American from Baltimore, Maryland that got exposed to soca calypso music working in a record store in 1990 owned by a st Lucian. This was my first experience with Caribbean and other diaspora people. Good people with great music with BLACK STALIN being my all time favorite. Black Americans really missed out. It's a shame that there is such a cultural divide amongst us he/you have so much to offer black Americans and we don't even know you.

"If is one thing now ah sure more dan ever, Namibia and South Africa right round the corner" This was 1986, four years before both Namibia and South Africa were liberated in 1990. Canon Knolly Clarke said it so perfectly at the funeral of the Mighty Duke - he said that tha calypsonian is a "singing prophet" This is SO true, its not funny. We really should give our bards so much more respect than we do.....We really should....

Been looking for a cd from this man ever since hearing this song on 88.1 last year!! The young soca artist could learn somethings from him. Does he have a cd of music? A myspace? This is Burning Spear. Big up Black Stalin.
