Low fps can cause you to get information from the game too late and getting a sense of indirect reponse from the car. This is due to the information about what your input is doing to the car, taking too long to give you visual feedback. But I'll explain more in the video! :)

Simracing is difficult. Learning how to drive fast takes time, dedication and persistence. Assetto Corsa Competizione is one of the best simulations with highly sensitive aerodynamics that want to be respected. Telemetry, such as motec helps with analyzing car behavior and finding major issues in the car setup or driving style. Special sim racing hardware also helps with becoming better, but certainly is not _the_ solution to your problems. Load cell pedals offer better feel. Stronger but most importantly more detailed force feedback of e.g. direct drive wheels offer more immersive sensations. Though I know and I've seen throughout the years, people with entry level hardware perform on top level.

Im happy you've touched on this. When people who play competitive multiplayer titles say fps doesnt matter. They are so so wrong. You need a smooth and fast, responsive experience as possible. Goes hand in hand with the people that say certainn lower end pc specs are good too. Yeh, if you want your game to look like minecraft maybe.

I am new to simracing - 4 months. My fps were around 55 all the time and I was quite happy with it. I just couldnt win any races, even against AI on 85% in Asseto. I thought my driving just sucks. After your video I decreased game details, so I have 70FPS - imediately I won first race, incresed AI to 90% - won again. The change is not as visible, but the feeling of smoothness is very different. I already ordered new graphic card, so I should be able to get 100 FPS. Great video, thank you.

This is so much true! I knew it would affect driving, but I didnt expect such differance. I used to play with 75fps/75hz and felt myself pretty good with 101-102% pace with some struggles. But yesterday I tryed turning graphics down and got 180 fps. THE DIFFERANCE WAS UNREAL, for the first time ive felt so much of cars movement aswell and It became easier in braking and accelerating. Aswell as taking tight hairpins. Long story short, there is a HUGE differance in 50/75/100/120/150/180 fps and higher you can go the better. My graphics now look like roblox but I couldnt be happier with pace, consistency and time I found with higher fps!

Nice comparison video. You are no doubt super sensitive to FPS and Esports pace is something else. You are experiencing XSX PS5 console performance levels. I was on XSX in ACC, and after moving to PC, it is the only way to go for sims. Additionally consoles typically use TV with extra latency. I'm on triples on 3080TI with 7700 cpu and have to make concessions to achieve a higher framerate. 5080 Q1 2025 upgrade, hopefully.

what I've seen around is that there is not much to add fps over the frequency of the monitor. so let's say you have a 75hz monitor, there would be no significant gain with 150fps. I think this would be the test to be made. sync the fps of the game to the frequency of the monitor, and then test it out with higher fps
@NielsHeusinkveld
@NielsHeusinkveld 3 ай бұрын
It can still matter a bit. Firstly I think at 150fps vs 75fps, not using Vsync obviously, tearing is slightly reduced. It seems, maybe, some of the time, the frames are closer together so the tearing (say a split flag pole) results in the bottom and upper part of the pole being less far apart. Also, lots of game things and logic might still depend on the frame rate, so overall lag can be reduced a bit above the monitor refresh rate. It will depend on the title but I did see reduced input lag in ACC a long time ago, going from 60 to 120fps.
@aaron0288
@aaron0288 3 ай бұрын
Well no, because if you have a 75hz monitor, the max frames you’re limited to is 75fps, regardless of whether your PC can easily push past that frame rate or not. So you’re not wrong, but there is no test to do. If you have a PC that can push 150fps, get a monitor that can take advantage of it. Otherwise you’re waisting money on such a powerful PC running it on a 75hz monitor. Nobody can perceive those extra frames because they’re simply not there. If you see what I mean. I should just edit to add, if you’re referring to just latency, then as above, it will be better at 150fps on a 75hz monitor, but very slight.

Rule of thumb is about anything below 10ms feels pretty much instantaneous to humans. So going for about 100fps (i.e. 10ms frametime on average) should be the minimum for anybody who wants to take simracing seriously (or any competitive gaming at all). I personally go for 120fps as of now, even though my monitor could theoretically handle 144fps. But it's important to me to have a stable average frametime as well, so I cap the framerate at 120 so it almost never fluctuates (frametime consistency being the buzzword) - that is pretty much just as important as the framerate itself. Random dips in framerate are actually worse than a lower stable fps to a certain degree imo, so a stable 80fps would be better than 100fps with random spikes and dips.

I think that FPS matter, but for simracing 60-75fps is more than enough. And I say 60-75fps cause is good to be over 60 so the when low % hit that low frame is not as noticeable. Maybe for a rally game where there are continuous tight turns and tight roads that make the movement of screen more critic, high fps can matter more. But in a wide circuit where the horizontal movement of the screen is minimum the high fps is not needed. When in a turn I don't look to the horizon, I look for close visual references (only look far in the screen for references for the brake point before the curve). Other very different thing is the smoothness of the fps, which can be annoying at low fps but with 60-75 that is not an issue (unless you come from 150 fps, in which case you will notice). But no need to run and buy now a super computer only for simracing, high fps are for first person shooters and thinks like that.

the faster you go, the more you approach the actual limit of the car, the more nuanced information you need to keep the car balanced. I would not be able to compete on pro level with 60-75 fps, simply because these tiny changes in rotation would not come across nuanced and fast enough. if you are playing casually, and just driving road cars, fine. but when you are competitive and the cars are faster, the tiniest detail will matter. with low fps you'd be entirely unable to control a snappy super formula anywhere near the limit.
@filiposay

@@SimracingPopometer I don't compete as a pro so can't argue what you said, that is just my opinion and feelings when racing. But I think it was already competitions before we had those amazing screens for high fps, and probably the lap times weren't that different. But in other type of games when the high fps were introduced is when the big differences started to appear thanks to fps (differences like 10 kills/1 dead to 100 kill/1 dead). Also I imagine you were already fast before have a 160hz screen, and that is why you are a pro not because of the fps. But for sure if used to 150fps, 60fps won't work for you anymore (but still think is more a smoothness effect than a reaction to the movement of screen as horitzontal/vertical movement in simracing is minimum).

its the rate of rotation °/s and the change of that rate of rotation that is the most important source of information about what your car is doing, because you do not have the g-forces telling you like in the real car. a change in the rate of rotation will indicate if your car is about to under or oversteer. There is only one perfect rate of rotation you need to target in every driving situation you encounter throughout a lap. Being slightly under or over that rate immediately costs lap time. reacting too late to a change of that rate will prolong the period of time over which you are losing time. also the tiniest of delay between the input you do to the car and the resulting response of the car forces you to await for that response before you can do a new correcting input. the driving error compounds. and if it only makes a 2 hundreds difference per corner, you are easily 10 places down the order over a lap.

FPS is less important what's more important is Frame Timing. Frame timing is the delay between each from being delivered and it is what affects your input lag and how smooth a game feels. It is better to sacrifice higher fps for consistent frame timing. To get consistent frame timing you need to lock your game fps, either through in game frame limiter or through your graphics card driver software, to not your average fps but your 1% low FPS (Usually what your fps drops to when your game stutters for a brief moment in a race). For example you might get 100fps on average around Silverstone but every time you go past the pits it might drop to 80fps. Therefore lock your framerate to 80fps and your game will look and feel as smooth throughout the lap helping build consistency.
