I spent a whole day messing around with Pewter and new molds I got.
Did not really plan a video, but this is what it became.
ENJOY!!!

Couple of points for anyone wanting to try this 1. Dusting your moulds with baby powder helps to get a better surface finish 2. if you have something in your workshop that vibrates when its turned on or makes your bench vibrate put the mould on there pour the pewter in and then vibrate for a few seconds and this will help to prevent any sink holes as it settles the pewter into the mould and helps get any air out Happy casting :-)

Smoke your molds with a candle If you want to make them shinny drop them in a vibrating tumbler with some crushed walnut shells and a liquid car polish I use NU car polish in a orange bottle in about 24 hours or so They will come out beautiful

Preheat the moulds so the pewter doesn’t cool down before it’s fully poured.

I kept waiting for the metal to freeze up on you when pouring the grenade. I drop in and look for pewter at the local thrift shop periodically, but haven't noticed any on my trips, though I have found some decent and cheap metal molds that I've used a lot. Always funny going to the front and being asked if I bake :)

@ralphmourik
@ralphmourik 8 ай бұрын
They are just random silicon molds I bought on various websites, most silicon will hold up to liquid pewter/Tin, Lead and probably Zinc. Just make sure it's actual silicon and not rubber, I've molted through a few ice cube molds in the past 😅 Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻

With the ones with small voids in them; is it possible to fill the voids with a soldering iron and a wee bit of pewter? Especially when the object is quite big and the flaws are so small?

For pewter; are there any silicones that I should avoid? I would like to make some molds copying some things and creating others.
@ralphmourik
@ralphmourik 4 ай бұрын
For pewter you should be fine with any kind of silicone molds, when making your own custom molds make sure youblook for high temperature resistance. A brand called: Smooth On I know for sure has it but I asume there are many more. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍

I looked the brand up for a company here in Canada that distributes it. There was one place about 45 minutes drive from here; so I went in this morning and purchased some. They had lots of variety. I bought the one that takes 6 hours to cure.

@@ralphmourik I went to a flea market today. The guy was asking $50.00 for 1 pot. I was shocked how pricey it was. I haven't started melting yet , maybe one day. Thank you for answering me.
@ralphmourik
@ralphmourik Жыл бұрын
@@malyhe2007 Wow $50 isn't really a flea market price if you ask me. Sometimes I come across really expensive Pewter and just tell them that they will never sell because I can get it 10x cheaper elsewhere. It's just a matter of getting a lucky find, or sometimes people actually giving stuff away for free. Just keep looking and asking around. 👍

@ralphmourik

@@malyhe2007 the good pewter I get over here has a mark of an Angel on it, sometimes it will even say something like 95% Tin or higher. My email is on my about page, send me the question there and I can send you some pictures of the marks if you like.
