I actually learned centering from this video, not my teacher. I’m now the only one in my course that can center every size of clay up to 4 kilos...every time. I’m secretly teaching the others 🤫

I like the method how you open the piece with your fingers on the slant and return back to center. Shall have to try that! That is a technique I have not seen before.

It looks like the first lump got 5 rings of mixed up clay vs the second lump got 14 ish because you coned up more times during the second lump. So how many times of coning up is 'enough' for the purpose of homogenisation? Or is it just that if we cone then the clay would be easier to work with [versus not coning up and go straight from wedged clay on wheel to centering/pulling up without coning?]

so when you're using friction to swirl the clay more, are you still leaning to clay to one direction to prevent the mushroom shape? Thank you so much, these videos are amazing!

You cone much less high than I have been. Since I have stubby childlike fingers, is it still possible for me to cone up high enough to be effective and still get my cone down hand up over the top of the cone without losing contact with my wheel head hand? It starts to feel like I am not getting anywhere very fast with bigger small balls of clay as I can only go up a wee bit before running out of reach. If I can only cone up a half inch or inch, is that doing anything? Does that mean I need to do it twice as many times as a person with long fingers? Thanks!

I also have small hands with rather short fingers and it takes me quite a while to get my clay centered though I'm slowly improving. I'm hoping some of the tips from this video will help me do it better and more quickly. I can still cone up pretty high - that is not my problem; I don't think that your right hand has to always be touching the wheel head does it or did I miss something?

So the second way of coning the clay is more a way to actually "stir" the clay?

I have a question, recently I got an interest in pottery, and I want to make some pottery. So I bought some tools, clay and a wheel. But the wheel is a non electric one. Is it still possible to make pottery with out a self rotating wheel?

Hey Tim.....how much clay can be centered using this technique? Seems at some point the ball of clay would be too big to leave your hands on the bat. Thank you for doing this!
