The use of averaging in the detector vs True RMS can lead to errors when responding to noise. Also the notch bandwidth can affect readings. Errors of several dB aren't unheard of. (saw about 2 dB difference when checking with a True RMS analog meter) Great though for alignment.

Our public safety communications consortium has been providing recommendations on test gear to have on hand for basic servicing of 2-way radio gear. This year we added spectrum analyzers w/tracking generator. The cost for an IFR or Motorola service monitor is way too high for the smaller volunteer fire departments and EMS groups. I was wondering how valuable of piece of gear a sinad meter would be? One tech working for a larger FD had an older model piece of kit called “Sinadder3”” or something similar. Most agencies are using a combination of narrowband analog and P25 digital . Some are using a combo of narrowband analog and DMR (aka “MotoTRBO”) which is TDMA digital. Some are VHF High Band (150-170MHz) / UHF (450-470MHz) and UHF-T (470-520MHz) / 700-800MHz. I’m far from being a tech with any skill, I’m a mere ham amateur radio operator.. so I thought I’d ask!: Any thoughts on the use of a Sinad Meter for these environments /situations? Thank you! 73 from the USofA.
