MORE Subaru Rear End Noise! - Another TSB!

Subaru released another TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) about rear end noise on the crosstrek, impreza, and forrester that is from a flange in the driveshaft.

Thank you for your video. I have a 2015 Forester with similar issues. The sound changes pitch depending on how fast you drive only. While driving ,if I put the transmission in neutral nothing changes nor does shutting off the engine while in neutral. The sound pitch is constant. 1.6 years ago I replaced the CVT transmission at the Subaru dealer. It currently does not exhibit any of the symptoms of the transmission prior to failure. I have taken it to my mechanic and he says it’s not the rear wheel bearings or transmission. He also inspected the rear differential fluid and there are no indications of failure. He also replaced the rear brakes , so I know it’s not them. Minus the noise, it seems to perform well. No clunking noise- no loss of power. Could this possibly be in the drive shaft ( propeller shaft) bearing(s)? What is the worst possible case scenario if it is?

My '13 XV had a nasty noise from the rear for years, I finally did the rear wheel bearings and fixed that. Now (after replacing a front CV axle yesterday, which did take care of another harsh sound upon full lock left turns) I am about to replace the left rear CV axle to try to eliminate a clicking sound coming from that area when accelerating into a left turn. Hopefully I'm lucky enough to replace the part that is actually bad one more time.

I have a 2000 jdm wrx impreza, I been hearing pulsating noise coming from the rear doing 100 kms. Today it started doing it also at lower speed. I had it checked last year the mechanic said it could be the rear differential and he drained the fluid but it came out clean. Left rear wheel bearing is new the mechanic says the right bearing is still fine no play.

I'm still driving my first Subaru, a 2005 Subaru Forester but it will be my last Subaru. I'm having the same rear end noise issue. My next car will be a Toyota or Mazda.

Took my 14 cross trek to dealer for this noise. Found passenger side rear axle separated from diff. Had both diff and rear axle replaced 2000 . Then noise returned. Had rear wheel bearings replaced noise gone. Another 800 bucks. Not a cheap fix

My new 2023 began doing this after 6 thousand miles. Dealer replaced the real differential. Noise began again after 4 thousand miles. There is some wrong with the new Crosstrek. Humming noise begins decelerating from 70 to 60 mph, and over time appears at slower speeds. I will ask them to check the U joints

ADF has a carrier bearing drop kit to help correct that sharp angle thats holding that support open after installing a lift... Kinda wonder if it would help me a non lifted vehicle as well

Does the noise sound like from the exhaust? I think my Forester might have this issue. The noise is more noticeable when I hit the brake at a relatively low speed (20-40)

If it’s the driveshaft, the speed at which the noise is happening (mine has a certain rpm based humming) would be much faster than the wheel speed correct?

I have this issue. It seems to be coming from the rear differential. The wheel bearings all checked out ok. Also, my transmission was a quart low on fluid and the front diff shares that fluid, even though the noise *sounds* like it's coming from the back. I took it in to Subaru today and they can't diagnose without keeping it, so I'm going to move forward with that and can let you know what I find out!

Do you have the CVT auto trans? If so, how do you check the fluid level?

@@tonymartie7173 I've got the 6-speed manual 2.5 Premium and the dipstick is in the front middle area.

FYI - it ended up being a wheel bearing. $900 to have it repaired at Subaru + 1 year parts warranty.

My 2013 Subaru crosstrek driveshaft just blew out going 55 mph and this car has always had terrible rear wheel nose. Basically since it was new

Hi there - I have a ‘13 Outback with this exact description of an issue. I’ve replaced both wheel bearings with no resolution. Fair to say this might extend to other models including outbacks?

You almost described my issue exactly, however, my car will make the noise while stopped and shake the car. Thank you for bringing these issues up. Now I know something more than just listening to the mechanic's guess.

If it happens while the car is stopped it’s likely not the problem. Sounds more like bad motor mounts

Have you had a problem with the back seat latch not working to fold down the seat? We cannot figure out how to fix that

@@KurtofTrades it won’t pull up to fold the seat down. It’s my sisters car and im going in to try the trunk truck you showed today!! I will mess with the seat myself to try and see what it is specifically! Love your videos!! If the trunk thing works- I am DEFINITELY doing the thing on your account so you can get coffee!!!

@@midorisuki3635 the little circular latch on top of the seats? Hmm mine pull fine, I bet somethings jammed in the latch, probably someone had a seatbelt or something in it when they put them back up.

2016 Crosstrek. Thank you very much for posting this. I thought it was some loose bumper plastic or something. Is a TSB a covered repair? Any idea what the cost is to fix this?

Not covered. It’s probs pretty pricey I bet, not sure though

Was a rear hub bearing. A mechanic did the job for $600 vs $1,400 at the dealership. We expect to pay more at a dealership, but more than 2x? Robbery.
