An idea for a future video: Porto's "metro" system and how 67 km, with 87 stations were built from scratch in just 9 years (from 2002 to 2011) and for only about 1 billion euros! Not that bad for a small country like Portugal

Station costs are interesting. I worked for an engineering firm that did stations for a number of systems, we did stations for the Queens line extension in NYC at the same time we did stations for the DC metro. The NY transit authority is not noted for being budget minded but their stations cost about 1/5 of what DC was spending. The NY stations were concrete and steel box structures that were very functional and industrial while the DC station were architectural beauties, the issue is that being pretty can get very expensive, the high arched ceilings of the DC design involve huge volumes of space and remember that DC is a swamp and there is only so much you can pump. One station had about 14' of reinforced concrete under the station as ballast to keep it from floating up on rainy days! There are no pillars on the DC platforms so the structure has to be strong enough to span the entire width of the structure and hold the street up on top of it. Tiled floors vs finished concrete, pretty but slippery when wet. It also seems that the diversion of the Toronto line makes it considerably longer with two jagged curves. I would bet that the stations in the fancy developments will be pretty nice while the canceled station were more utilitarian. The poor folks should protest.

Removing both Clark and Royal Orchard stations is a bit ridiculous, kind of similar to the one stop Scarborough subway. It is 5km between Steeles and highway 7. They could put it at Center or John as well, but there should really be at least one more station in there. Cummer is pretty close to Finch station since the station is on the north side of Finch, but Finch-Steeles is pretty built up and could definitely use a stop somewhere in between. I don't think locals would complain about modest local stations if there are stations.

The way I see High Tech Station is that its more of a case of "who does it hurt"? Afaik the yard is still going to be there and the IBC says it will be north of that station, so since the tracks will be there and subway trains will be passing that area all the time, it becomes one of those "low hanging fruit" type stations that you brought up in your recent LA Metro video. Even though I like the prospects of a future extension that travels north like a Richmond Hill Line RER, its pretty clear that this isn't going to happen at least any time in the near future so we're going to be stuck with High Tech as the terminus for a LONG time, meaning that the close station spacing here isn't going to start causing a travel time issue at least for anyone. As a side note, based off the wording provided in the IBC, I have a feeling that this station came up in the negotiations as YR sort of begging that the High Tech area gets a subway station like they would've gotten with the initial RHC Station plan, so I have a feeling that if this station will be built, it will be entirely financed by YR, which in that scenerio is perfectly fine. If York Region wants an extra station that's super close,

By the time construction starts, it’ll be $5 billion x1.5 or x2, as per standard Metrolinx procurement practice 🤪 Also whatever they do, paleease open the Ontario (Relief) Line first before building another extension deep into the burbs. Lastly, agree with Reece that despite the cost overruns and delays, TO is finally getting the rail expansions it needs, so kudos to Metrolinx (sort of).

Great video! Keep up the great work! I really agree with you on all of this. As someone who lives at Bathurst and Centre, we really don't need two stops so close to each other at Richmond Hill Centre, and having more smaller stations between Steeles and Highway 7 and Steeles and Finch would be really great
@Absolute_Zero7
@Absolute_Zero7 3 жыл бұрын
The problem is that since High Tech and and Bridge Center would most likely be above ground, High Tech specifically would be super cheap, and because there will be an MSF north of both High Tech and Bridge Center, you're not even saving money by not laying down tracks. In the end you'd probably be able to build like 5 High Tech Stations for how much it would cost to build Royal Orchard or Clark. As a result you're not going to get a smaller station if one of the RHC stations are cut. You're just going to have 1 of the 3 smaller stations, RHC, Steeles and that's it. High Tech is a cheap bonus station, nothing more.

For Eglinton West, cut-and-cover was the obvious solution. If the locals object - then elevated would be the only solution considered. Tunneling with TBM is by far the worst solution. For Scarborough, I think elevated is harder*, so it would have been best to use the precedence of Eglinton to be applied for Scarborough. * - to get from underground to elevated, takes a lot of space. From tracks at about 5m below grade, the top of the tunnel breaks the surface. An elevated structure has beams about 2m deep, and clearance of 5m is need for traffic. So the track have to go from -5m to +7m - during this whole length it is blocking cross traffic. 12m divided by 2% grade = 600m. It's hard to find a place were you have 600m free to do this. (for Eglinton West, you have the valley that helps).

$700 million per km seems very high. For comparison: 1. The BART Berryessa extension costed $150 million per km. 2. The BART San Jose extension has a budget for $670 per km and will go underneath downtown San Jose. 3. LA Purple Line phase 1 is fully underground and at $444 million per km. 4. LA Purple Line phase 2 is also fully underground and at $619 million per km. 5. Phase 1 of the NYC 2nd Ave subway cost $1.53 billion per km. 6. HART (which is in seemingly constant scandal over cost) is at $357 million per km.

Cut-and-cover was 100% the right choice for Eglinton West. If there were any complaints, the alternative should have been elevated. Best route here was elevated from Mount Dennis to Scarlet, then c&c to Martin Grove, then elevated over 427 to Renforth. For Scarborough, elevated is harder. But b&c along Eglinton and up McCowan. A "Old Mill" style station at Lawrence, then c&c to STC. short TBM under 401. c&c up to Sheppard and to CP Rail, then curve NE just north of corridor (c&c switching to trench to at-grade) to Markham/Finch. For Yonge, it's c&c to Cricklewood Creek - this makes it cheap enough to build Cummer, Steeles, Clark, Centre, Orchard. Sort of bridge over the creek. Continue c&c to the cemetery and then sharp curve (300m radius which is better than at Union) to get to the CN Rail just south of 407.

There should be more stations, not less, but if there can only be one; the most glaring omission of a stop between John and Centre Streets (Thornhill Centre) is a big mistake. Situated midway between Clark and Royal Orchard; the one stop there- with a bus terminus built- could handle commuter traffic from all four corridors (Clark, RO, Centre/Hwy 7 West, John/14th/Denison)... basically all of southernmost York Region.

Aside from the "Relief Line" what we need is more mid-city east west heavy transit, being subway. Eglinton will be a help, but really we something more. Our transit planners and politicos seem obsessed with everyone having to go downtown, whereas a huge number of the populas for , work, shopping, study and pleasure go perpendicular to that. A good indicator of that is our "Main Street", which has it's own TV program and that bypasses downtown entirely.

If there is one station that should be cut from the Yonge North extension, it would definitely be Cummer Station. Yonge and Cummer/Drewry is only a short walk to Finch Station. Thus it's redundant to have a subway station that is already well served by another one.

One of the main factors as to why subways in Toronto are so expensive per km is because Toronto's subway cars are so huge compared to others. I've been on many Metro systems around the world and never seen any that come even close in size to the ones here. Even major systems like London, Paris and New York are significantly smaller.

Its only 2 tracks wide right now but it's owned by CN (the Bala sub, their main track between Toronto and Sudbury) and I imagine GO will want to expand it in the future to accommodate more trains on the RH line. It also runs directly through a cemetery south of Hwy 407, and I mean idk about you, but I think the people whose ancestors are buried there might have a problem with the province digging a big trench next to their graves so that the subway trains can get in and out of the tunnels. I would suggest 30 buses an hour does not justify a subway. I think it would make more sense to build a lighter - elevated - train. Seriously the road allowance is large enough to build something down the middle. The roads are 30 meters wide, and likely the road allowance is likely 40 meters, it would not be visually overwhelming for most of it - to have a REM style grade-separated elevated track - with the overhead power. As I recall projections for ridership when initially proposed were on the order of 9,000 riders - peak hour peak direction. A smaller train that could be expanded - running frequently - would likely be cheaper - and offer more attractive service. Any savings should be placed into running the train further north.

Cummer Stations needs to stay. They don't need to make it a palace, something like North York Centre would be more than enough and you can catch the bus on the street like with Bayview station, so you don't need a bus bay either. That area is already intensifying and there is still land to build. Maybe give developers higher height restrictions if developers pay part of the cost of the station construction.

The Langstaff station is unnecessary imo. The North part of Langstaff GO station is already connected to RHill terminal by the bridge tower, and the drive to Rhill terminal from North Langstaff is just around the corner. Even if they decide to build the subway station at the southern parking lot of Langtaff station, I still think it’s too close to really make a significant impact. Langstaff is still in the relatively southern part of the city, so it’s not like that station will be any closer to residents who live North of Langstaff around Major Mac and even Bernard. I know they aren’t going any further North than High tech so I’d rather have them build another station more south or scrap that extra station all together.

Line One Extension sucks, literally! I was a student at York university for four years since 2015, and I enjoyed less connectivity after Line One was extended to Vaugh city center. If I need to take a bus to any smaller urban area in GTA, it will take much longer now(at least 1 hour per trip). I am 120% for sure those who planed the new routes didn't read the heat map before they decided. In so much so, I am not against building more railway. Unlike many big cities in US, I think public transit in Toronto is still good enough that many people don't really have to drive. I just hate to see the city I love falls into a trap, when you build more lines but decrease the efficiency, and eventually it becomes so bad that everyone has to drive.

Having grown up at Yonge/Eglinton, the Yonge subway was a natural. In those days I was on the subway by myself as early as 9 or 10 years old. I excitedly toured every new subway opening from Bloor/Danforth, Yonge North to Finch, Spadina, and even RT. I could have gotten much use of a Crosstown route if it existed. Alas, I have watched the decades pass by and endured the pathetic development of Transit in this city/region. I've moved several times within Toronto and adjacent suburbs. This Yonge extention would be great (for my house price) because I live in the area. In fact, I had to take a deeper look at the new tunneling plans to see if any rendition showed tunneling UNDER my house. So far, it does not but only missed me by about 200-300 metres on current draft. That said, I think it is all a colossal mistake and will only overload the Yonge line as the trains move south. I used to have a hard time boarding trains at Eglinton station going to work in the 80's because the trains were full from Finch. To my knowledge, Metrolinx owns the rail from downtown to the John diamond (CN East/West tracks just north of Steeles.) Couldn't there be any way of adding tracks northbound to Hwy 7 (or further) and dedicating those for more frequent GO? Electrification? Could that be cheaper than the 5 -7 Billion dollars for extending the Subway. But they cannot even interconnect the GO with the Leslie subway. Oh well,, someone's making lot's of money and that's what it's really all about. Don't really care anymore for myself (except if it tunnels under my house). This city is good for making pronouncements and uttering platitudes - but nothing much gets done - and if it does - it's often too little, too late, and too expensive. my 2 cents.

As someone who has been to the new Spadina line stations, what Metrolinx needs to start doing is going back to basic subway designs like the ones in downtown. There is no reason for my tax dollars to build palaces while cutting stations to vital neighborhoods.

Given how costs are such an impediment to metro expansion (yet rarely is the same standard applied to highways), it would be great to see a video about ways metro planners could save money when designing stations/expanded lines. My ideas would include: - Skip the card swiping lanes which add considerable expense to stations. Consider making fares free. Without the segregated paid/not paid areas a station can be DRAMATICALLY simpler. - Skip the elevaters at stations. It's a huge expense that few use. - Skip the tvs and electronic arriving/departures boards. Most could use their phones now. - Not all stations need to be as long as the max train length. Low use stations could be just long enough for the front cars which passengers could be trained to use in such cases. - In select cases passengers should be allowed to cross tracks at grade. Many stations designed over-complicated and expensive walkways/tunnels simple to get to the other side of the tracks. - Property values shoot up around new train stations. Government (and not lucky landowners) should benefit from this value they created. Cities should buy this land and developer into high-capacity offices/apartments themselves for big profit.

Line 1 extension to Richmond Hill is a no go until the DRL is built with a terminal station at Dundas West. Riders from Finch to Eglinton may find themselves waiting for the 2nd and 3rd trains. IMO Yonge North is without value
