One more note I wanted to add! Along with being cruelty free, they do make their products themselves and with natural ingredients so I'm sure that is an aspect of the price. While I totally get that and respect it a ton, I wanted to remain subjective to the products themselves. I'm by no means telling anyone they SHOULDN'T spend that much, but this is all based on what I feel comfortable spending. Okay das it I swear 😂

I’m reading these comments and I’m seriously like wtf? You guys realize how insensitive some of those are? After someone you’re watching spent the whole day and probably some of the night filming and editing the video for you, and you ask them if they were forced to do this? You tell them they didn’t seem to enjoy it? That they look fed up? Not JOYFUL enough? If Rachel didn’t want to make the video, she wouldn’t waste 10 hours making it, believe me. Also, good luck trying to keep the energy high for a half an hour long video. *rant finished, flies away*

I think people forget that there are real human beings on the other end! You two are probably my favourite KZfaqrs, since I've discovered you both! And I think that's mainly because you both have such GREAT personalities. Probably just people I would be mates with in real life (although obvs I love vintage too), so don't listen to anyone telling you that you are anything less than GREAT! :) I've had people be pretty awful to me online, and it does not feel good. I think people just find it harder to empathise if they are not looking someone in the eye.

Just wanted to mention that a large part of the appeal to the cream mascara is that it's hygienic! Because the wand doesn't go into the tube and you wash it every time (btw if I'm in a hurry I just set it down on a piece of tissue and wash it later), no bacteria can transfer into the makeup. It also lasts foreeeever. I've been using my tube for two years now, and it doesn't fall to the same "throw out in six months" rule because of the hygiene of it.

Lokyee'd NYX isn’t worth the hype, in my opinion. I have never found a product that was actually the same quality of the higher end product that it was supposed to be a dupe of. It tends to break me out, also. In the case of lipsticks, the more expensive you go, up to a point, you are really paying for significantly more pigment in the product, a better milling of the pigment, resulting in products going on smoother and feeling better, and a much longer lasting product. Result-more bang for your buck.

I bought their Snow White Red lipstick because they made a replica of what she wears based off the ink they used in the film. I think that's really cool and it matches my skin color, which is rare (I'm medium-dark skinned). When compared to other make up brands like MAC or Too Faced, Besame is about the same price and they have something else going on which is the historical experience/asthetic/research to it. You have a piece of history in your make up collection. To me that justifies the price, but then again, I am a history buff.
@rachelmaksy

@lostchild06 6 жыл бұрын
True, I understand. I haven't really tried anything other than one lipstick (and a free lip gloss they gave me with my order), so I really can't say what is the quality of other products they have. Personally, I think they should do more replicas from movies/tv shows since those are pretty rare to find (accurately, I mean. MAC does it all the time but they are REALLY shitty at it. I'm still mad at their Selena collection). If they did a whole collection of lipsticks that all the Disney princesses wore based on the ink they used and year they came out would be pretty fantastic (plus great for cosplay). Also it would be cool if they did a collection of lipsticks that are replicas of BAMF women from the 1980s down like Frida Kahlo, Billie Holiday, etc would be really cool. I would buy the shit out of that. Or could you imagine a Grace Jones blush collection? Giiiiirl, our cheeks would be looking chiseled for the GAWDS! LOL

Thank you for this review, I agree with every word! I recently got several Besame products, because it was so hyped up in the vintage community. Lipsticks are ok for me, but the tiny amount of powder you get for the price is absolutely ridiculous! I loved the 1940s perfume, but it doesn't last, so have to keep reapplying it, which means I will run out of it pretty quickly. Paid over $60 for 3 products + additional 50% in customs, because I'm in the UK. So, basically, I could have purchased the same amount of makeup from CHANEL (I mean, CHANEL!) for the same price lol. Thanks again for keeping it real x

There is nothing wrong with this video. Your attitude is perfectly fine and you have all the rights to be how you feel like. I actually appreciate your natural attitude and I would prefer you like this, even if you will be nervous or irritated in your videos or just happy and smiley, doesn't matter as long as you just express your feelings. We are humans and criticizing someone for expressing his or her feelings is absurd. Is not you who has a problem, they have. You shouldn't care about people opinions anyway. Even if is good opinion or bad, just stay dead to their admiring or criticising and just love them anyway. Kisses!

I'm glad you were honest with your review. If cream lipstick isn't your bag, it isn't, but the one place I didn't think you were fair, was when you said consumers are just paying for the esthetics. Yes, you are paying a premium for them, as well as for it being a luxury brand, but you are also paying for their research, and more importantly to support a small business who manufactures their products in the US. They can't compete with international giants with factories all over the globe, and paying a fair US wage pushes the price way up. Those issues don't matter to everyone, especially when you're first starting out and broke, but it does to some people. I just think it's fairer to note that sourcing and US wages are one of the big reasons for the higher costs, not just esthetics. You said to justify the higher price you'd need something different or special, to me, supporting a small business and fair wages is just that. As I said, good for you for being honest, even when it made you uncomfortable. I respect that
@rachelmaksy
@rachelmaksy 6 жыл бұрын
+Andy Peterson Yeah that's totally true, I also mentioned in the video that you're also paying for the experience, history, and accuracy. So I didn't mean for it to sound like it was purely aesthetics-based. I wish I did mention a bit about their manufacturing now that I look back on it, but I wanted to focus on the subjective performance of each item.

To be fair it was a product review not an ethical make up review and history. I get what you're saying I truly do bc I believe in Besame and support their hustle and I'm glad you added this tidbit to the comments BUT considering this wasnt a paid review just here are my personal thoughts on 7 products....it wasnt her responsibility to go that deep. But I appreciate you going that deep and taking it an extra step further to educate some who dont know so ppl are getting more information as to why a company like Besame is a great thing and I hope continues to succeed.

I've purchased Besamé products simply because they're Made in USA and because it's neat to have a totally all-vintage experience sometimes (even down to the makeup colors and application being as historically accurate as possible). However, based on just on the merits of the Besamé products themselves, there are easier makeup products out there for the Girl-on-the-Go, so I get what's being done here in this video. The ethics of the company producing the products aren't really considered in an honest product review, as well they shouldn't be, because a product review should just be about the product, the cost, and how it works for the reviewing individual.

Yes! I feel when you're comparing 6$ drug store lipstick to small batch- quality ingredient-made with love makeup you're comparing apples and oranges. I personally have never tried this brand but there seems to be so much support for it I want to try it now. Anything I put on my face is quality, made in USA, cruelty free and I know the ingredients are legit and I have seen such a difference in my overall look and quality of my skin. I have tried some drugstore primers etc that have "shook" some beauty gurus but however I was not um shaken.

The high price can also be justified by the quality of the pigments used. It's really hard to see that if you're only accustomed to liquid lipsticks and not a lot of pigment-based products, but when you pay for higher quality pigments, you get things like a natural fade of the cream lipsticks, etc.

But that doesn't mean if you don't use or like their products that you're any less into vintage things or whatever. sometimes, but you still have to recognize that if you wear a liquid lipstick per se I’ll be able to tell you’re wearing a liquid lipstick as opposed to a reproduction cream lipstick. The finish and texture is just different and you can’t replicate it in liquid form. If you don’t mind people knowing you’re using modern makeup than that’s fine but if you want to look historically accurate it just won’t do. I know I’m like two years late but we haven’t invented time travel yet so I guess I’ll just have to be really late to the party

Sadly, Coty’s Airspun is made in China, which means that the talc in it is most likely (if not absolutely) to be contaminated with Asbestos. Granted, talc sourced in other countries are probably contaminated, as well, but greater care is taken and higher standards are enforced when production is done outside of China. I’m not telling anyone not to use a particular product, but I care about consumers and hope to help them make informed decisions. ❤️

It DOES however, mean the labour practises will be unethical and shoddy. Edit: Upon looking into it further. There are a small group of people who put claims against Coty's for injuries sustained 7 years ago fro asbestos. It was one bad batch, but the reality is that there products do not contain asbestos and the contamination has already been contained a while ago.

I watched this video after watching the apology video and I was expecting it to be a lot worse. I'd rather have someone tell me their honest opinion rather than have them obviously be searching for something nice to say just to save someone else's feelings from being hurt. I love packaging, but i'm not willing to pay that much money for a pretty bottle or box if I'm not in love with the product on the inside. I'm also very frugal when it comes to makeup... and pretty much everything, so I definitely know where you're coming from. This company sent you their products in hopes that you would put them in one of your videos. It's not your responsibility to be complimentary if that's not how you felt. As per your perfume, what you experience is a physiological reaction called olfactory fatigue or olfactory exhaustion. Your sense of smell adapts to prolonged exposure to a certain smell by decreasing your ability to smell it. If you want to try the staying power of a perfume, you should ask someone to smell it when you apply it, have him/her leave you for a few hours and then come and smell you again. Also, everyone please take this in consideration when you use perfume. I've been in offices where someone puts on more and more perfume, not realizing that other people can smell it 100 feet away.

I watched this video, then saw the response you made later on. I have to tell you that I loved how honest you were in this. You DO NOT seem ungrateful. Social media culture these days pressures everyone to be 100% peppy and positive, as well as to not offend anyone. You have every right to your opinion, and the company DOES get free advertisement by sending you their products. You also have the right to be in a different mood than people have come to expect. I also struggle with being a people-pleaser, and wanting people to like me. Please, don't water yourself down because a few people decided to get their feathers ruffled by your opinions. If you are 100% true to yourself, you can trust that the people who stick around do so because they really and truly like you for who you are. (I'm saying a lot of this for myself, as well.) I like your sass. DO NOT dilute yourself because a select few can't handle your flavor.

I'm seeing this vid two years later, but I wanted you to know how much I appreciate the transparency of this review. I've been working with another brand for over a decade but I LOVE playing with new shades and formulas. I don't tell my clients that something is fabulous (my brand or another) unless I believe that. And guess what, often they still buy things that aren't my personal faves BECAUSE I'm honest. And because I treat them with the respect to assume they are intelligent enough to make an informed decision. My. guess is that Besame got income and customers from this review because your tribe trusts your input. Keep doing you, because that is who I watch and enjoy!

A) I love this video! I've never bought Besame before, so it's super interesting to see how a normal person (as opposed to like, a full time ~Vintage Instagram Model~) wears their makeup! Thank you for posting this - now I know I won't be able to like, buy Besame and slap it on in the rushed 10 minutes I have before classes in the morning. B) [deep breath] okay, so! Up until very recently, I've made soap and perfume for a living. A BIG thing with perfume is skin chemistry; IE, how certain fragrances will react with an individual's skin composition (pH levels, how much they perspire, even things down to diet and stress levels can affect skin chemistry). If the 1940s perfume rollerball fades quickly on you, the individual notes might not vibe with your chemistry like a vanilla-based perfume would (same for me and florals - my skin EATS floral notes in like, twenty minutes, but a musk or sandalwood-based perfume will last close to 24 hours without reapplication on me!). Perfume is one of those hard things to sell online because you really don't know how a scent will react with you just by the description of the notes alone, but it's great that you got to see how it worked for you and made ya feel like a Grown Up Lady! Sometimes ya gotta buy the $25 perfume and see how you jam with it! Reapply if your skin fades the scent really fast, life is short and perfume is amazing! C) Cat hair in my lipstick is pretty much my entire life. D) Crooked Lips Club made me wheeze with laughter. Thank you. ♥

I think it's super great that you gave these products such an honest review. I tried Besame lipsticks a really long time ago when the company was smaller and much less beloved and I wasn't impressed then. I found the lipsticks really drying at that time. Its possible they have updated their formulas since then, but I agree liquid lipsticks are just so much more convenient! I stick to Colourpop for creme lipsticks (and liquid lipsticks too) as they are cheap, work well, and are also cruelty free.

I know I’m 2 years late to this video but reading through some of the comments is just disgusting and makes me sad for Rachel. I agree with you 100%! I think what many youtubers don't think about when they make these videos (and, thankfully, Rachel is NOT one of them) is that it's easy to be delighted when you get this stuff for free. Followers like us, have to spend our hard earned money on these things and honest reviews are the key! Hell, I spent $100 on 3 items and, to me, apart from my curiosity satisfied, it was a waste of money. I wish I had waited to see this before I ordered the stuff, because everything she said turned out to be true, for me.

I don't know about not practical. I wear them every day, a full face of Besame (complete with their eyeshadows) and it stays on for me I just pat my T-Zone with their brightening powder because I have such oily skin. I think it's just a matter of it wanting to work for you. I at first thought that wearing a vintage face like how a lot of vintage lovers and pinups do every day wasn't function-able but I tried it and it works for me. Actually, me having the modern look no longer works for me, I think it depends on their person.

I know I'm 2 years late (just found your channel yesterday haha) but I think the pricing on this is probably that it's more difficult to make these products the same way they did "back in the day". I agree that the worth for consumers is definitely in the vintage feel and aesthetics. If you wanna "feel" like you're being vintage, it's a good company to use because their products are the same as how our grandmothers and their mothers did their makeup (color transfer and all). I honestly just really appreciate that you're not a stuck-up vintage person when it comes to products. You go for the aesthetic but also use modern improvements to make your look more convenient and easy to achieve. You make it an attainable goal for others who are interested.

Ideas and feelings about vintage makeup and fashion strikes me very much the same as classic cars. There's pretty well two distinct camps. There are those who want only the original, all the hassle, expense, and faultiness of it, for authenticity. Then there are those who want the authentic look, but don't really care if it's real, reproduction, or even if it's just an old shell on a new car... If that makes sense... I'm in the second camp. I think Besamé is selling you a piece of history more than functional makeup; although like most replicas, it does still work.

Their Victory Red is my favorite red and I don't follow the instructions. I line my lips with whatever red liner I have at the moment (I found the dryer liners, the more "pencil" ones like, the ones you need to use a pencil sharper for, work best for this), put the lipstick on, blot on a tissue, and I am good to go. They go on heavy, which is why you should blot the excess. I have found that that makes them last the longest and doesn't bleed. I have found some bleeding near the like, 5 hour mark but it's so minimal unless you're right up on my mouth, and no one is that close. I wore it for my wedding and it lasted like a champ for me.

It's definitely one of the better red cream lipsticks I've used. And I do only wear it for special occasions, because like you, I don't like to have to worry about it, especially when eating. The MAC cream lipsticks last better through eating, because they aren't as creamy, but they are a little drying. Thanks for this review. It was so refreshing and honest. I heard about Besamé Cosmetics through Facebook and when I went to LA to visit family stopped in. The shop is adorable and I totally got sucked into the vintageness of it. Being completly new to makeup application, I spent about $200 on a mini makeover lesson, two lipsticks, the face powder, blush, foundation and mascara. I've never spent so much on makeup. And since I did, I've been wearing this stuff almost everyday to justify the buy. I too did not read the instructions on the lipstick and kept wondering why the color kept bleeding into the creases so much. So thanks for that little lesson haha. Love your channel, this is the first video I watched. Can't wait to check out more. It's refreshing how honest you are about the things you like and dislike.

Thank you for putting so much of your valuable time into this honest review! It is very likely that my face would rebel against Besame. My lips dry out terribly no matter the season, so I do a lip mask (apply, wait for it to dry, wash it off) then balm (leave on for a few minutes and wipe off), then Covergirl Outlast liquid lipstick. I use Revlon Colorstay eyeliner and eyeshadow, Covergirl water-resistant clump crusher mascara, and BB cream and blush my mom gave me and that I'll eventually replace with products from the Walmart makeup aisle lol. It all applies quickly, looks great, lasts, and is affordable. Can't beat that :)

The Pinup Companion I totaly get this. I hardly have ti spend any time on my hair, so I line to spend that time on doing my face. It doesn’t really matter if I’m even using makeup that day. I just like the washing and moisturizing prosess.

This is such a great review! I love Besame, and I think you hit on exactly why I love it and it makes sense why you don't! I adore the packaging and actually save it and use it as decoration!. The lipstick instructions part cracked me up because I already put my lipstick on exactly the way Besame recommends. I would be struggling with liquid lipstick. I use the cake mascara after stopping mascara for decades because it irritated me to feel the mascara. I love Besame mascara because I don't feel it on my eyelashes. I love that I can clean the brush between uses. I love honest reviews positive or negative because then I will not be disappointed in a product if I know the pros and cons of what I am are buying.

A year late to this video, but as a Besame lover, I loved your review! Always appreciate personal honestly when folks get press boxes. I do believe the price is justifiable, as others said, in factors other than the beautiful packaging. I have been to their Burbank store and it's very small and cute, and doubles as a makeup museum! They do a lot of interesting makeup history educational work. For a small business, which they are, I like to support them when I'm able. The perfumes are my faves also. My vintage game, as a butch, is more menswear-adjascent so their powders and perfumes are more my ballpark and I'd recc them to anybody.

I live for your extra long videos!! I love your honesty, it can feel like all we hear about Besame is overwhelmingly positive and this is such a thorough counter opinion. When you're spending as much as these products cost it's so important to have diverse reviews like this one. I personally love their lipsticks (but I'm also strictly a cream lippie kinda girl). I'm also someone who prefers taking the time to do my makeup, so I love the extra application time, it just means I get to do even more makeup :) on the low though you're literally perfect

I do a similar method for cream lipsticks, with the blotting and reapplying. I also begin with a lip stain and a liner before I use any red lip color (even longwear liquid lipstick) because I heard a while ago that reds should always be layered.

I really appreciate how honest you are in your review. I love the look of Beseme, as you say *aesthetic*. I've been seriously considering purchasing something to try... But I'm also for everyday practicality - both financially as well as wear and tear! I work as a receptionist in a hospital outpatients. Five days a week I'm in uniform with minimal makeup. I need versitility for days I can wear vintage and makeup that can last the day with little touch up! Keep being you Rachel ♥
