"More Than Something" - John Goldsby Trio

In this performance video, we feature the renowned jazz bassist, educator, and author John Goldsby playing his original composition "More Than Something". John is joined in the studio by Jamil Sheriff on piano and Caroline Boaden on drums.
This video is an excerpt from his course Jazz Bass Vol.2: Stretching Out. In the online course, John explains his technical and musical approach to “More Than Something,” and gives tips on playing a ballad, and how to create a broken-time, “interactive” bass line.

John Goldsby well that answers that... I just posted a question in the Ddb Study group wondering whether to put on the fresh Spirocore weichs on my bookshelf or keep the Spirocore mittels that came on my hybrid. Just started upright 2 months ago and still sorting out string choices. Wondering about tone and whether to stick with mittels since right now I don’t know any better ha ha

What system did they use to record the double bass? pick up or microphone?

Microphone. John's in an isolation booth so we could get a really strong signal.

How high are the strings set on Geoff’s bass? John’s playing looks so effortless!

They were higher than I have them and more of a ‘medium’ than ‘low’ string heights. Probably about 7.5mm on the G and 9 on the E. I think that John has such efficient technique it looks effortless. 🙏🏻
