These were amazing vehicles. That V10 diesel is an absolute brute and If I recall correctly in one of the original Top Gear episodes they actually hooked it up to a Boeing 747 and the Touareg towed it along the runway. They are also very capable off road and it was, in fact built, to be just that. Interestingly enough, between 2008 - 2012, Audi stuck a V12 TDI into their Q7, but unfortunately due to emission control regulations it never found its way into the US market.

More torque than a GTR? 2017 GTR only has 480lb-ft. This VW has more torque than an '05 Viper SRT-10, '05 E55 AMG, or an '05 Duramax.

These things are great! I love the combination of sounds you get with it, the diesel clatter, the turbo whistle and best of all you can hear that Gallardo-esque V10 sound in there. Just like how a 500 Abarth thinks it's a Ferrari, this thinks it's a diesel Lambo lol. It's too bad we never got the Audi Q7 V12 TDI here.

As opposed to Teslas that "save the planet" with their batteries' production, their "ecological" recycling, their charging (from grids that are based predominantly on fossil fuels). At least when one of these Touaregs have reached a million kms (and many have) you wouldn't have to change the battery twice (which is the equivalent of two conventional cars - in terms of emissions in the production phase).

There’s also a V12 diesel Audi truck on this same platform but it was limited production bc they were some type of special build they were about 130 grand 15 years ago

@@richardmahoney9415 Right the Q7 V12 TDI was offered in europe for a breif amount of time. Performance wise it could not compete with its petrol powered rivals like the X5 M and ML 63 AMG but was more efficient than those cars and had more pulling power. Audi even experimented with a diesel R8 with the same V12 TDI engine. The cooling for such an engine in a mid-engine configuration is no joke, also the R and S-Tronic gear boxes could not easily handle the 1000 Nm torque output at low revs. Fun fact: the R8 race cars actually used TDI diesel engines during Le Mans - France (pronounced withouth the -s at the end) endurance racing very successfully.

Great Video ! I'm a Huge VW Fanatic but know very little about this car. The V10 TDI sounds awesome and because of the rarity and my curiosity I did a quick search and found out there's only 4-5 for sale in the states ! for a car that was $90k out the door I was surprised they're going for about $20k with just over 100k miles

Mk6_chino thats Way to expensive. In Europe they Start at around 4k. In 2008 there was a R50 touareg with the same V10 but with 350hp and around 800lb of torque

In Europe you can even upgrade the turbos and install a high performance cam-shaft for additional performance which makes those cars properly savage (for their seize and weight).

I actually live in Europe an these cars are avoided like the plague. Volumetric tax for 5.0, maintenance and sheer amount of fuel this diesel uses beats the whole purpose of a diesel... this is why they track them, nobody wants do actually drive it.

We have one and it’s a car that is not quick off the line but it get going when it is already moving like you can go from 40-80 in 2 seconds and not go over 2500 rpm

Great video - huge fan of TDI's (my daily is a 2.5 V6 TDI Quattro A4 currently in the 200 bhp range - more to come!) I really want to drive a V10 TDI and in the UK atm they seem to get as low as £7k

CarAnd Mechanical 2.5 v6 tdi is possibly the worst choice amongst tdi engines, in line with pre 2009 2.0 tdi engines in terms of reliability.

I've seen and heard the horror stories with them which is why I was careful when I got mine to get one that had Cams, and the Injection pump changed. There are still some issues to resolve but these are mostly typical TDI issues - mostly resulting from parts not being changed. I've come to the 2.5 from a 1.9 TDI and for the driving experience it's great - such a torquey and smooth engine - I can afford the issues that may arise with it too and getting it to 300BHP it will be cheaper to own/run/maintain then an S4.

Saw one today in near Dayton OH and bi-turbo Mercedes g63 maybe. Both today. Neither would race me in my maxima but the merc did have a kid in back the vw I think was fartnfignewtons lol Edit: I had no idea it was v10 diesel. That’s why I looked it up. Thought V10 but gas. Good vid and thanks

You DO HAVE TRIPTONIC (and there was an option with steering wheel paddles as well). Mine is a 2005 V10 as well and I have triptonic (sans the paddles).

if the gtr was accelerating from like 2k rpm i belive that its got smoked but defenetly not if the gtr would shift down. torque is still no excuse for hp.

Hi, Great video! I’m looking at buying a Touareg V10 TDI. Would like your opinion/experience on driving the truck. How was the engine noise/ cabin noise? I realized, since it’s a Diesel engine, it won’t be as quiet and as smooth as the gas engine, but just don’t want it so loud that everyone will hear when starting up in the morning, and too much cabin noise from the engine/ or road noice when driving.. Thank you!

Tim T I got an 06 v6 3.2 and it makes noticeable road noise but then again I have bald all seasons and I think my rotors are warped, but it is a big heavy car so I would say expect some road noise, as far as engine noise I don’t notice mine but mines only a 3.2 v6 so probably a bit quarter than the tdi

To replace thermostat in engine, step 1 is to remove engine. Because of that every repair is easily 2k

I still love the V8 4.2 2004 Touareg It drives like a ship. Heavy, smooth, and powerful. Non of the newer Touaregs compare. Now that you have improved upon the technicalities, bring back the 2004 model to the market, equipped with all these neuschkeinten. It will outsell above all its competitors. And, please, we still want to keep driving the old Touaregs. We need spare parts for replacements. Make them available, please. Don't leave us to go scavenging. Help us enjoy owning the classics. We are willing to buy the parts to refurbish what we have. Help us pimp our ride.

Would love one and they are cheap enough: for a reason. It’s a risk: the engine is great but the air suspension and electrics are all prone to problems and just because you can pick one up cheap still does not take away the fact that it is a £/$65K new with maintenance bills befitting that. I’d like to have a drive of one because all VW PD engines pull like trains for their size even the little 1.4 3 pot so this must be epic but would I be brave enough to buy one: probably not.

More Torque doesn't give the whole story, if it's multiplied by rpm then it's power and that's the measure of performance for the engine. It wouldn't even keep up with a Mercedes ML550. It feels powerful because of the lag, then you feel power comes out of nowhere because the foot is already down

I have owned both ML550 and the V10 touareg and I can honestly say that the V10 is a far better and much more powerful than the ML. i still drive the Treg now and the handling finish and power is no comparison......

Are you serious ? This thing runs like what ? High 14's in the 1/4 mile. 3rd gen MR2 even with stock boost of 12PSI can EASILY run mid 13's.

yes it has more tourqe but no one has ever said that the gtr has enormous torque and it has even more torque than a lot of ferraris does that mean it is faster? no btw. the gtr hate is going in a direction where hate Is the only thing around it it's at the point where people get told that if you like the r35 or own one you're not a true car guy (I have been told that)
