People love A24 because it's a company that provides original, unique, unconventional films that allow complete creative freedom to the directors and don't let studio interference taint their visions. They know the films are not gonna be for everyone and I certainly don't like all their movies but I can respect a bold, polarizing piece of art--it's exciting to check out their films because they're so refreshing, even if they don't deliver. My unpopular horror opinion? Scream 4 is the best one in the franchise IMO (takes it even further than the first)

@Tommy Ross. I disagree with A24 providing unique and unconventional films, I think those films are highly overrated and are trying way too hard to copy the stylish and sophisticated late 60’s and 70’s masterpiece Horrors of Don’t Look Now, Rosemary’s Baby and the like, and falling flat on their asses. You want unique and unconventional, try watching a 70’s or early 80’s Dario Argento movie, try watching Cube from 1997, try watching a David Lynch film. Because that’s unique and unconventional, not films like Hereditary or The Witch that critics on Rotten Tomatoes gush over.

For me with a24, the reason I respect it so much is because it's a studio that allows filmmakers to make the movies they want. Most studios try to get too involved in what they think the audience will like and a filmmaker's vision is lost along the way. Of course, they aren't going to be perfect movies every time, but we get to see exactly what the director's vision was for the movie. That is so inspiring because I eventually want to start making my own movies and would love the freedom to do so.

The thing is, they had nothing to do with the production of most of their films. They just purchase the distribution rights for them. "The Room," "Ex Machina" and "The Witch" were not among those not actually made by them. Distribution is their specialty.

I wouldn't agree that shows are "going the way of the dinosaur" in general. Yes they're are more shows than ever, which means there are probably more bad shows than ever, but there are also so many shows being made with amazing quality and higher budgets than ever before. I suppose the good shows tend to be the "shorter" ones though, as in like only one season, where the entire storyline is made to consist within it, usually appearing on a streaming network with no commercials. So I guess they aren't necessarily "tv shows" in the conventional meaning. I can definitely see the point of view where seasonal shows are maybe becoming less popular, especially if they are actually on "tv". However, when I look at the shows I enjoy now, and compare them with shows I loved years ago (and still love for nostalgia purposes), the more recent shows are often far better on a technical level.

I think it's just hard to make a well paced and effective horror show. I've only seen a handful of series (Buffy, American horror story) and a lot of them run into an issue where padding is added to prolong the story which results in filler episodes. Rarely have I seen a horror TV show where every episode mattered.

I think A24 should be praised because, love or hate their movies, they are one of the only reasonably ‘mainstream’ studios that have been continuously giving a platform to original ideas. Blumhouse is definitely more cynical and tends to churn out a lot of crap purely to make $. As for the point about trigger warnings; unfortunately they could give away spoilers in regards to the film, especially for people that like to go in blind. Without sounding callous, I think it’s better that people check out ‘Does the Dog Die’ first if they are going to be triggered by something.
@mayzo51184

I agree with you because then they'd have to put them for every type of movie because everyone who has been triggered will have lots of different things that might trigger them. I think that site could be a great resource for someone that's easily triggered. I know I'd check it out to warn someone if I was gonna see a movie that had a specific scene that might be a trigger for them

True. "The Lighthouse" was one of only about three or four movies released during that short stretch that featured a new guy joining up with an older, fairly insane guy in a lighthouse where eventually someone fucks a mermaid. I hear they're going to do a series of movies about a character named "Eddie Ruger" who has shears on his fingers and kills teens in their sleep but, get this, he does it while wearing a bowler hat! :)
@NickaLah

There is definitely a way to give trigger warnings that are general enough to not cause spoilers.... I'm pretty sure most people haven't heard of "Does the Dog Die", and the name of the site is kind of unfortunate. It's clever, but anyone else thinking the type of person that could use trigger warnings might be turned off by the name of it if they hear about it without any context given? lol, just sayin'... I'm not sure the owner(s) of the site thought that one through :)

I think she was specifically alluding to SA as one of the most common triggers. I think there are many horror movies out there that include a horrific SA scene that wasn't a plot driver at all (e.g. The Hills Have Eyes). There are some movies that I'll never watch because I know that the entire plot is about sexual violence, but some have snuck up on me. I'm getting better with things as time goes by, but I used to go into full-body shutdown mode if I wasn't expecting the scene and it triggered me. It took me a long time to realise that Does the Dog Die contained a lot of triggers (not just animal ones), but it is good.

A recent unpopular opinion: The Haunting of Bly Manor wasn’t awful just because it wasn’t as emotionally intense as Hill House. I actually think going in a more subtle direction was necessary so it wouldn’t be repetitive. Hill House was great because it was emotionally intense while being terrifying. And to me, the calmer atmosphere made the emotional trauma of watching characters losing themselves in Bly Manor and what follows them afterwards was effective for me. Maybe that’s because one of my greatest fears is losing my memory, but I still found it effective and moving But regardless, i feel like people got mad because Bly Manor wasn’t the same as Hill House and I would’ve hated it being repetitive for the same reasons I hate AHS past season 3. That and the nonlinear story telling is the best aspect of the series for me anyway, so I’m not mad
@HoneyBeeForMe

I totally agree. I would not have liked bly manor nearly as much if it was an exact copy of hill house. Like if I wanted that I would just watch hill house again. Bly manor was intense in some parts and I love that it wasn’t trying to be a horror movie where everything needed to scare you it was more to unsettle you and make you wonder what was going on with these characters half the time. Like are they losing their minds or is the house messing with them?
@roseakitohavok

@@HoneyBeeForMe exactly! Just because it wasn’t as scary as Hill House (I still have nightmares about the storm episode) doesn’t mean it isn’t a compelling story with characters I was invested in. The emotional climax of Bly Manor was so, so much more powerful to me than Hill House. Hill House has the more tight story, it is scarier and has an overall better plot. I'm torn about it, though, because rich women regardless of race, sexuality, etc. do use sexism as a tool for not being called out on things, primarily celebs/politicians. i completely agree that trigger warnings should be implemented, in all genres of film honestly! i’ve seen many people argue that tw’s could be spoilers for movies, but you don’t have to go into descriptive detail to say that there are certain types of disturbing content in something. and honestly, i’d rather be slightly spoiled than unknowingly go into a movie that’s going to make me have a panic attack.

If those were the two alternatives, then I’d agree with you, but most people watching movies have access to the internet, and I think one standardized database (similar to the current rating system) that is referenced before the movie and perhaps that even comes with a QR code linked directly to the movies page both on the box and before the studio credits achieves what both “sides” want.
@emmaclarec
@emmaclarec 3 жыл бұрын
@@thrawncaedusl717 I actually completely agree with you. I don’t think that there needs to be text before the title screen that explicitly says “trigger warning: ......”. I just think that in some part of the marketing before the movie is released that it should be stated if it, as an example, has sexual assault in it, whether that be in an updated rating system (because frankly ours is incredibly inaccurate in comparison to a lot of countries), or be in a standardized database like you’ve suggested. I just don’t think that people who’ve had a traumatic experience (and there are more people out there than some may think) who are triggered by certain content that’s often used for shock value in horror, should have to hunt through reviews in hopes that someone mentions that a movie has said content, when it would be far easier if it were to be incorporated into the movie marketing itself.

"trigger warnings in horror" I was dating a girl who had been sexually assaulted before, and she definitely appreciated the fact that I told her beforehand that the movie we were about to watch contained a scene which I worried might trigger that feeling. At the end of the day we are just watching movies in our free time to enjoy ourselves. It doesn't need to be a contest to see who gets off to the most deliberately disturbing films.

I believe there should be a way to see trigger warning stuff before you buy a ticket or click play. Like a info button on the screen. That way you can see the warnings if you want to and those who don't want to be spoiled don't have to. I know IMDB does a parental guide on each movie that basically tells what happens in a movie so people can do that now if they want to not be triggered but it doesn't seem like it'd be too hard to add a little info button to screens

So interesting that you said this about trigger warnings! Just today, I watched Rust Creek on Netflix and I asked the friend who recommended it to me if it had rape in it. He didn't remember, and that was fine, but I explained to him that I can handle that sort of violence a lot better if I know to expect it. Doesn't make it fun, and I hate it being thrown in for gratuitous purposes, but a lot of time it propels the story and I'd just like to be prepared. So thank you for this. I think we all know what specific trigger you’re referring to. I think sexual violence, trauma and assaults are definitely exploited in the horror genre. There are so many shows and movies that I would love to watch but can’t enjoy bc they feel the need to include sexual violence and trauma. I’m no prude but watching a woman (or anyone) be graphically sexual assaulted and calling it “entertainment” just makes me feel sick.

The problem is not that these opinions are unpopular: the problem is when they're forced as the norm by their owners. I can agree for instance that A24 isn't perfect, but it is by no means a slow studio when it comes to cracking down successful horror movies. Dismissing the studio as a whole as "garbage" for being "artsy" with some films is like pretending there's no art to old Italian horror cinema and directors should have been doing music videos instead of horror movies for all the colors and things they brought up; or that a director such as Gaspar Noé or Stephen Lynch shouldn't do movies because they mostly survive out of style rather than plot. When something is crap, it is crap and that's it... whether someone likes it or not, is a matter of taste. So, we can all have things we like even if they don't make it out of certain norms or we can hate them when they're already right in many ways. It's a matter of perspective.
