i must take this time to THANK YOU 10'000 times. i did know some about this but after watching this it all came clear to me!. i just got a new 20acr place from a person who was highly educated in environmental study's. just looking around to the trained eye you can see most of what he has done here and make sense of it.. BUT!!!!! i couldn't understand why the man left great big old dead ELM's along the lawn. they could easily take the house out?????? but i just left them alone thinking there must be a reason. LMAO!!! i was picking up trash along the road and WOW! i found 5lbs of morels and was a happy man. but after watching this video!!!!!! i walked around the lawn and O M G!! lets just say I LOVE MY NEW PLACE A BIT MORE NOW!! LOL. over half the dead trees have 2or3 lbs and i got over 20lbs of monsters at 2 of them. THANK YOU!!!!!

Suggestion.. We save net onion bags.. The idea being as we walk hunting mushrooms the spore can fall out. Thus sowing more spore for the future. Maybe right???? One thing I know is when we have had high water on the reservoir all spring, the next year there's lots along the high water mark. Theory being the spore floats and settled at edge of the high water last year. As a 75 year old man who's spent tons of time in the timber. You know your stuff and did excellent job getting it out. Ps ,,, mark your patches with GPS year to year... Again not a single dispute. Good job..... In this neck of woods it's grey elm and red elm. Tulip being yellow poplar. Cut timber several years. Graded lumber 20 yrs. River ash and ash. Some places call grey elm, rock elm. Really enjoyed your video... Camera lady good job too. Enjoy !!! Edit,,, ha I'm 2 states. west ,, Indiana...also dogwood trees bloom here at morel time.

I was taught by my father to mushroom hunt in Northern Michigan and we used onion bags. I was told that it is for the same reason...to spread the spores. I was also told to cut the stem at the ground, but leave the "roots" in the ground. The idea was that the root may re-grow later or next spring.

I would only harvest what I can eat before they go bad. Mushrooms do not freeze well. You could dry them and re-hydrate them later but it needs to be done carefully. Allow some to remain so that they can propagate for next season and many years to come. Keep the site secret and make sure you map it well so you can find it next year.

Overall good video. Really satisfying to see you get the morels, and good advice on identifying the trees. Even if you're not too sensitive to poison ivy, you might want to point it out to your audience. I'm not really sensitive to it, but for people who don't know and turn out to be really allergic, it would be good advice. Also, definitely get yourself a mesh bag for the mushrooms.

I do not doubt that, you did whatever it took. Back then, those shrooms help tide them over through Spring, as food was often scarce. You didn’t leave it in the field or woods then. I have taken off my jacket and put them in it, he could’ve taken off his T-shirt and used it, tied the end together and make a tote of sorts. (He still had his coat to keep him covered). I always took extra bags after this happened to me once. They got plenty and was satisfied, though.

When looking for any mushroom they all have 1 thing in common and that's moisture content of the substrate all year round, the goldy lock zone for said shroom that can support the spawns all year round. Morels tend to grow where other mushrooms don't grow because they prefer it dryer then others. That might mean finding really dense bush with lots of humus in dryer areas which will support the spawns all year round, or open pastures 20 feet from a wetter bushline. They tend to do well on inclines for said reason where they can utilize the best of both worlds and get the moisture needed at spot A and fruit 10 feet over in spot B. A good rule of thumb is to check the bush through out the year and if you see other shrooms growing, then it's probably not a spot for morels. They tend to grow in dryer substrates where a lot of other shrooms would have a hard time in.

If you're wondering where the poison ivy on the back of your hand came from, look at 18:38. Years ago the Mississippi came up and down rapidly in the Spring, covering an island in the river with a thin layer of silt. Some folks went shroom huntin' there and found all they had to do was look for places where the drying mud was cracked and humped up; there was a morel under every hump! Another friend of mine who worked in a Missouri quarry once found two growing out of a drying clod of mud on a bulldozer track, three feet off of the ground.

The mycelium is active in the ground and gets ready to bloom when conditions are good. IE. Rain, moisture, temp. It is a sure fire way to know when to hunt. Taking the base will not affect the mycelium of the mushroom or future development. It was only wasted material. It will merely self destruct.

After reading hundreds of comments from various mushroom related youtube videos, I can safely say that your scientific facts will be ignored :-) You know and I know that picking a mushroom with whatever method you favor will in no way, shape, or form damage the miles of underground mycelium. You know and I know that billions of spores have already been released to the air by the time you pick the mushroom and "tapping" them or dancing in circles while carrying them in a mesh bag will do absolutely nothing to disperse the spores. Regardless...you will see the same comments in EVERY mushroom video. Science? That's for nerds! :-)

@@michaelb2999 In fact the morel is not a mushroom at all. It is an imitator, no gills, and a member of the yeast family. Closely related to the truffle.

Thanks for the great video. Elms do indeed produce, but most were wiped out here (Chicagoland) long ago. Chinese Elm is actually worth checking. My brother had a mature Chinese Elm removed from his yard and the following spring he had numerous Morels!

Nice find. We shake them in a bag of flower, then fry in butter. Get a crispy outer layer. My favorite. Really good cinnamon and sugar, light coating. Flower, butter my favourite. Yes use an onion bag, so the spores can fall out. The big ones a great stuffed, onion, peppers, cheese, ect. Thanks for sharing.

That is amazing. I've hunted my whole life. Never found any that big. But today I found 7 that big. I felt like I was on drugs. I was driving down the road and thought I seen one. Like I've done before. Usually I was mistaken and I seen nothing. Yet today I found seven 20 ounce bottle sized or better morels. Even though I stumbled across them I still felt incredible. Thanks so much for your video. I'd love to share my video and pic but don't know how.

Not sure where you are hunting but in Northern Arkansas / Southern Missouri some of my best locations have been among small tulip poplar saplings and small cedar trees. I honestly seem to find more in the sapling areas. Don't get me wrong there are a few large older trees that produce but one of my favorite spots has few trees over 6" in diameter.

I'm so Envious, Our family use to make the yearly hunt of the GREAT MOREL's in Michigan when we were young and then we moved to Georgia, and I haven't ate one since, and that was more than fifty years ago. There's nothing like the flavor of a MOREL!!! We also had a spot where we found huge Brain looking Mushrooms that also had an excellent flavor. My parent's would cook them up just like your wife did, My mouth waters just watching that video. The one nice thing you did was not pick the place clean. Leaving Morels behind will make future years just as good or better. Do like our family did, once you find a Morel Honey Hole, don,t give out the location. My relatives in Michigan say it's hard to find a place that isn't worked over real hard, or else it's private property with limited access. Back in the 1960's you could go into the woods just about any where, but not so much any more they say. I sure do miss those days with the family as a kid hunting for morels, we mostly found the smaller ones, but if we hit it just right we would find the monster Morel's like you found. I sure would like a nice bag of them while I can still walk. They sell freeze dried Morels at a Market down here for close to $100.00 a pound. Walking in the woods looking for them is as enjoyable as eating them. Thanks for the wonderful video.

This comes from the toppling Goliath brewery in DeCorah Iowa >>>> What's Brewing? This month's featured brew is Scorpius Morchella. Its earthy flavor with just the right amount of bitterness can be enjoyed each Spring. Brewed to celebrate our brewery’s annual day off to go morel mushroom hunting, this excitingly hazy double IPA is a tribute to our love of great hops and morels. Some of the hops used in this beer are grown in the southern hemisphere where the Scorpius constellation is visible during the morel mushroom season. Created with a combination of these Southern Hemisphere and Pacific Northwest hops, Scorpius Morchella is meant to be shared with friends on a warm, spring afternoon.>>>> The TG team unites every year to enjoy an outing of morel mushroom hunting together. Huge shout out to the owners Clark and Barbara for sharing their land with us and cooking up an amazing meal afterward!

People can suddenly become allergic to poison ivy, even after decades of no reaction. Also, getting the poison ivy oils on a mushroom can spread the oils on the bags or baskets and to other objects. And, it can expose anyone who is around to the vaporized oils when they are cooked. They can breathe it in and get swelling in their throat or lungs. Just need to be aware and careful.

Awesome video! We had a great year for morels here in central Ohio. Found over 600 in our woods. I always try to be conscious of trees to look for, may apples, etc. But the last few years there hasn't seemed to be any rhyme or reason! I pretty much just take a stroll through the woods and pick em up left and right.
