save the rinse water to spread in areas of your yard where mushrooms are most likely to grow. This works really well with chanterelles. I'd pour the water along the paths in shady moist areas.

I found a patch of morels in the vineyard site I'm working at in the Okanagan Valley, BC. This video helped solidify my identification of them! I'm so excited to harvest them today :)

YUM! I just found a whole jackpot load on Vancouver Island, Canada - 14 big, beautiful morels were just waiting to be picked and in perfect condition. I had never found one before. It was better than the dream when you find money, haha! And they are delicious.

Cool. I live just south of Bellingham and I've never seen true morels (Morchella) on the western slope of the Cascades. Usually I have to head over to the drier, east side. I do, however, tend to find an awful lot of "Early Morels" (Verpa bohemica) on this side.

I have found a few patterns that have helped me a lot recently in eastern oregon. Mild shade (not too dark with patches of light), exposed and loose dirt/moss, they like where water collects at the bottom of hills (west facing seems best), and two plants to look for are linnaea and star flowered Lilly of the valley.

Thank you. Interesting, I found a morel in my yard. The ants are all enjoying it. I cut off the top and noticed the wavey parts are oozing a dark brown goo. I believe it was pretty early in the growing stage. Not ready to eat it just yet. I cut it open and it is hollow just as you depicted.

I have eaten the black false morels. My mother called them beef steak mushrooms because the tasted best when sauteed in the pan after the steak. You mentioned edges as places to find the morels. I had the experience of covering my aple orchard soil with cardboard and covering it with maple leaves. The next spring the morels came up all along the edges of the cardboard. My theory is that when the micylium reaches a dry spot it tries to bridge the gap by fruiting and sending out spores.

Do not eat the false morel. Do not even say you ate the false morel. They are toxic to everyone except you Hans.
@washingtonwebfoot9908
@washingtonwebfoot9908 5 жыл бұрын
@@JR-playlists You're wrong. Many people regularly hunt for and eat Gyromitra korfii and even Gyromitra esculenta. While it is is true that Gyromitra esculenta has killed thousands of people in Europe, the North American populations do not seem to have the same levels of the gyromitrin toxin and only a handful of deaths have been reported, and then only in the North East region of America, despite widespread consumption. It is actually a delicacy in Northern Europe and is even legal to be sold in some countries as food but must include proper preparation techniques and warnings as to it's potential lethality. Gyromitra korfii, or the Beefsteak mushroom Hans mentioned, is even more popular, though it, too, has been implicated in many deaths. Personally, you couldn't pay me to eat either one of them...just too sketchy. Verpa bohemica, on the other hand (which is also known as a false morel and sometimes referred to as "early morel") is something I, and dozens upon dozens of people I know, have eaten for years without ill effect. While it is also known to be responsible for negative symptoms in a few sensitive individuals, recent findings suggest a higher percentage of people experience bad reactions to Black morels than to Verpa.

Thank you so much for your info. I look in books often to identify mushrooms but never feel quite secure enough to positively say it is a particular kind of mushroom. This is the very first time I can positively state the 1 kind is of mushroom I have in the yard is a motel. I had 30 or 40 morels in my yard. Now I feel terrible that I ran over about 10 or more before identifying them, as I am not a mushroom eater. I did however take a picture of 1 stand alone that just stood there so strong and dominating as if to say he would be around a while. And sure enough he wasn’t kidding. I have harvested what I could because they are almost gone now. I will be checking with my neighbors to see if they eat them and if so will invite them to harvest here if they come back next year as well as giving them the ones I did manage to harvest. There are still many in the yard but I don’t know if as they deplete their flavor changes or if they become dangerous. Honestly I have revisited mushroom identification repeatedly for 30 years so to be able to finally positively identify a species...WOW!! Thank you!!

I don't really like mushrooms, but I ABSOLUTELY LOVE morels. The texture is not like all the other mushrooms I've had, it's more meaty. And the flavour is incredibly scrumptious. If you happen to find them again next Spring, just cut them open, wash off the soil and dry them immediately. Then fry them in butter, just like that nothing fancy, you'll see how good (and different!) they are :D And if even then you still don't like them, just pick them and bag them, morels are quite expensive and sell quickly xD

Are Morel and Chanterelle spores sold commercially so we can just scatter them in our gardens and harvest the mushrooms, or do they have specific symbiotic relationships with specific tree species in the forest?

Depends on the "false" morel. There are different species which go by that name. Gyromitra esculenta, which was pictured here, has killed hundreds, maybe more, in Europe and even a handful of people in North East America. The toxin responsible is gyromitrin. For reasons not fully understood, there hasn't been any reported deaths in Western America despite the fact than many people eat it. Even though the Western population of this mushroom does not seem to have any deaths connected to it, I would not eat one for any reason. Nor would I eat the closely related Gyromitra Korfii, or Beefsteak mushroom for the same reason...it's just too sketchy (it contains gyromitrin as well, albeit in smaller amounts). Another type of "false morel" is Verpa bohemica, also known as the "early morel" or sometimes "peckerhead". In the past, it was placed alongside the Gyromitra species but recent research reveals it to be much safer. Some recent findings even suggest that a higher percentage of people have a negative reaction to Morchella elata (Black Morel) than to Verpa. I and dozens of family members and acquaintances have eaten Verpa for decades with no ill effects but there have been reports of negative symptoms in sensitive individuals including gastric upset and, rarely, temporary loss of muscle control.
