Kroger's Corporate Greed

Kroger is trying to tamp down criticism over its corporate greed by announcing it will increase the base hourly pay of its employees to $16/hr. Because Kroger workers have a union in UFCW, their pay is going up.This is a good start, but Kroger must do more.
Kroger made a $2.6 billion profit LAST YEAR ALONE. It brags about finding $1 billion in “savings” every single year by operating “more leanly.” Nevertheless, it is still threatening to close stores in Long Beach, Seattle, and LA over hazard pay laws. Kroger’s workers in Southern CA have voted to authorize a strike. Workers, led by UFCW 770, UFCW 21 and other locals, are trying to negotiate better contracts for their workers and keep stores open.

I don't shop there anymore since 2019 after the company tried to crucify me for reporting a racist store manager. I was being singled out for no apparent reason by the store manager in front of a predominately white management staff for stuff he wasn't holding them accountable for. I was advised by the union to file a complaint with the company's ethics hotline. After doing so, the store manager, district managers, regional HR and including the CEO began a retaliation campagn against me.

Don't take this the wrong way but I have to ask, Was it perceived racism was it real racism because to some people in our modern world if you question someone who's a minority or disapprove of something they do or try to hold them accountable they pull out the race card but yes they're absolutely Racism that exists but not as much as the mainstream media Tells you. There is such thing as shoe racism that is going on but there's also perceived racism or what I call Commie racism (Meaning that a lot of people in the communist party around the world Pushes false narratives and creates controversy and creates strife and disorder where there was none or where there was very little) Just like during martin Luther king in the 1,960s and the civil rights movement there absolutely were times where black people and the white people who supported The civil rights movement And desegregation Word Word discrimination against and word sprayed with hoses and word with billy clubs but there was also a lot of these big big Riots that happened in the 1,960s and 70s the happened in the big major cities like New York city Los Angeles Chicago Detroit and many others, There have been Communist front groups basically companies who were just a front for a different organization that the communist party worked with To push strife and to push false narratives and to push fatherlessness in a whole bunch of other things into the inner city, They played both sides they played whites against blacks and blacks against whites and Mexicans against blacks not because they actually cared about those People or those nationalities but People or those nationalities but because it made them more money and gave them more control because we're fighting amongst ourselves instead of fighting against them. And when a lot of those big riots happened in the 60s they had to do with how black people were tired of being treated badly or considered half a citizen There was absolutely some strife like that there was absolutely some justified protests but the whole thing where a lot of people in these communities burnt down buildings and beat people up that was instigated by the communist party and other group Cause strife and cause problems(A good example of this is when martin Luther king was shot there were people who ride it in the streets but they weren't burning down buildings and getting upset they were grieving absolutely but they were not trying to destroy their own communities or their own businesses) But then communist and other government groups and government funding groups came around and basically told the whole community that you need to fight and you need to kill people and you need to burn things down to get what you want The elderly people who spoke against this were told to shut up In the community but the younger people the revolutionary the black panthers and other groups were told to get more Violent with people who didn't agree with desegregation and To cause more Chaos and more violence and more arson in these communities that had already been devastated by Segregation but also by Bad government policies, Because remember; Before the early 1,960s Detroit Baltimore New York city many of these big cities were not run by democrats and the policies actually helped the black community there didn't hurt them (Except for Chicago it's been mob run for over 100 years so they had more problems than these other big Metropolis cities That were the hub of manufacturing in the mid 20th century)

@@lancefisher8358 that’s good maybe some are ok but in the sense of standing up for you against the company they’re on the companies side 150% I wasn’t even trained properly and ended up quitting because of the AWFUL management and HR department. Couldn’t even get ahold of our union rep without like a two day notice so he effectively was zero help. They had some dude who just started train me for two days and tried saying it was sufficient when I wasn’t even told a single standard or what they expect from you at ALL. When I asked to be trained by a manager they got all weird and told me they would need a “witness” for the entire training process because apparently they said I could’ve been lying about insufficient training even though it was two days and was shown by a guy who hadn’t even been there a month himself. Absolute joke wasted an incredible amount of my time too by putting me on suspension for a minor ticket for an entire year because the courts wouldn’t take it off my record until then. Overall one of the worst experiences I’ve had with an employer, constantly belittled and berated for not “meeting standards” even though I was never told of the standards and they refused to give me even a day to acclimate to reaching those standards.

They constantly remove full time workers from the schedule completely without warning, our managers give head positions to people who they sleep with. I worked there as a meat cutter for 6 years and got fired in 2017, two weeks before I was to transfer to another store as a dept head, for working straight through an 8 hour shift and not taking a lunch break when I was the only one working the dept that day. Got called into managers office the next day and told that I was fired, because I had voluntarily quit the day before by not taking lunch. Never had been written up for anything, ever! Served 2 tours in afghanistan as an infantry soldier. Took the union over a year and a half to come around to settle up for anything, but they decided to withhold all my backpay and refused to give me my job back because after a year passed of having been let go, I facebook messaged the store manager and told him what I thought of him in a not so nice way. Company wanted to press criminal charges and union decided not to arbitrate my case even though it was agreed by the union and kroger that it was a wrongful termination. This is a horrible company and I hope they lose their asses for everything wrong they've done to it's employees! They owe me a year and a half of backpay at a rate of 17.35/hr! They can burn in hell!

We had "hero pay" & "hazard pay" for a few months before they changed their minds about it. We still can't even get decent enough hours sometimes. An ex-coworker of mine told me 1 of our managers said they couldn't "justify the hours to the sales" when she told him we needed more hours a few months back. The company used words like "essential" & "hero" but in reality, it feels more like a joke. We were treated better for a few months when this 1st started, but folks went right back to treating us like crap again. The company went from "you can refuse service to people not wearing a mask" to "only let the managers ask customers to wear a mask". We don't feel like heroes, alot of us are burnt out, we struggle to get hours, & we're freaking tired. But hey, the big bosses made sure we got $100 on our Kroger cards every so often to show their "appreciation" for us working so hard through these trying times!

I worked for Kroger in Texas from 1987 to 2001. I worked my way up from being a sacker to managing a store. What I learned in my time with Kroger was that retail grocery work is a burn-out job, more so the higher up you go. The company relied heavily on the proverbial "carrot and stick" method of falsely motivating people. I stayed just long enough with the company to discover that there was no carrot at all, just another stick. When 9/11 happened, I resigned in order to join the Amy. There was no exit interview or any attempt to get me to stay. On my last day at work, after 15 years of loyalty, I turned in my keys, walked out the door and tossed my name badge in the trash can. I was in Iraq shortly after that. I worked way less hours. I was home most nights and weekends. My worst day in Iraq was far better than my best day at Kroger. I retired from the Army last year and regret nothing about my decision to leave Kroger. I'd break my son's kneecaps before I would ever let him work for Kroger.

As a Kroger employee for two months and a customer for all my life, I can confirm. Even if high schoolers tend to apply, work, get lazy, and quiet quit, it still does not change the fact that Kroger anytime sooner or later it'll head for the drainage in terms of economy, customer experience, and employement. Currently Kroger's supposedly investing a full billion dollars to raise wages for employees, regardless of which department. I have a good suspicion that's 1. Chump change they will not even share to employees, and 2. They'll keep up with committing the sin of Greed until a big shock to the system arrives. I do agree that Kroger IS the face of Greed.

The UFCW HAS ALMOST 1.5 million members. Kroger isn’t the problem. The problem is the UFCW. The unfair thing happening at Kroger's is They like to start checking out one customer before all the food is bagged up from the previous customer and they don't always give you all your food and that's theft of private property and they won't refund over the phone and they put bought items back in the freezer or on the shelf and sell stolen from the customer items that haven't been refunded. Then Kroger's prosecutes all cases of theft when they should let the customer see the video and they can just pay for the item that wasn't paid for and maybe a security fee for people who watch the videos and they won't be prosecuted and they can keep going back to the store. It's cheaper to pay say $20 for the unpaid for items and maybe $100 for the security fee than it is to prosecute someone. Kroger's is just as guilty of theft as the customers who intentionally steals. But most times it's by accident. I used to use self checkout and I had to scan items like 6 times before it would put it on the screen with the price.

They get told to be down your neck while they go chat in a group and talk shit. Only a few where I was and Is why I quit and will never go back unless I don’t have an chose. Had a customer tell me they boss you around but stand around while you do all the work. My department lead was wanting to be a store manger and when she did the training for it. She like is this all you really do? This is so damn easy. It’s just bossing people around and dealing with customers. Like wow. I work in the most busier department. Ran it alright at night, when I left the department, it is falling apart because of short handed. Very stressed out and no breaks at times because if you did. You would behind but the morning staff would lack and would get into trouble if it’s not done. They need to realize if the job isn’t enjoyable or even good at all. Workers will not preform well at all. I was depress and started to drink more. The head boss was never happy. The other mangers even stop caring and just get through the day and some even quit because of poor treatment. Kroger use to be good to work for but now it’s about be in the higher ups.

If they were that greedy they wouldn't be buying a lot of electric shopping carts for the disabled people or have click list so wheelchair bound people can drive to and pick up groceries and they wouldn't care enough to ship food to the disabled people. They bought freezers that a disabled person can't open and get items but they send someone to help and he keeps checking on me and helps me whenever I go there. They spent a lot to get the disabled people's business and they economically choose the best Kroger's per city and get it as the disabled people's Kroger's. I understand that they couldn't afford to get every store outfitted with everything needed to accommodate the disabled people. The other grocery stores are the greedy ones. Especially Walmart. They may have one or two electric shopping carts and two plugins at each entrance and exit. They claim that they have a lot but they are in use. Most grocery stores don't even have a electric shopping cart. Piggly wiggly puts their electric carts way back in the store and you have to go to the service desk and ask for it and then half the time they are not charged up enough. Kroger's spent a lot of money, but they are reaping the rewards by exclusively getting disabled people's business. I like the delivery. Independent contractors so they can come into the house and bring the groceries to the kitchen and leave them for a $20 tip. They would probably do it for free or $10 extra tip but I really appreciate their help and I like delivery the best but shipping doesn't require a tip and they give free shipping. If I order from click list then I have to be able to take in the perishables and I have to leave the non perishable items for the next time or get a extra load to the porch to get in when I don't have any pain.

Returning pop, beer and water bottles and cans is becoming a big problem here in Tillamook Oregon. They have 4 machines, only 2 work, the hours are from 8:00 to 6:00 at night yet inside the store you can still buy these items. I think when the can refund machines are shut off, then they can't sell them inside the store either. Now you half to stand in line behind at least 5 people to get your cans refunded. I think we should just take our cans down to there parking lot at night and throw them all over their parking lot. I bet they would change their ways after many people people did this. Their prices for a tomato is ridiculous expensive. I get much fresher and better quality produce from a Walmart. My parents said in the 80s kroger was the best place to go. Now they ran everyone else out of town such as thriftway and IGA kroger has slowly become the worst. Now they're closing stores of their own and forcing people to drive 2 times the distance to an over crowded store. However, i fully support their stance on closing a store in a democratic socialism city forcing a business to fork out more money to employees per hour. What you fail to mention is yes I completely understand the hazard pay and what not that should’ve been evenly distributed across the board, but what about the overhead, what about all of the chains that they have to pay out with workers compensation, maternity leave, the accidents that go on within the facilities, what about the lawsuits that the company will accrue overtime for things that the stores could be doing better? We have to take these things into consideration and not just point the finger directly at the CEO, if anything he has the most stress because he has to run the entire operation across the country and if one things goes bad it’s all on him and to deliver for his customers and employees, don’t think of it from a minute standpoint, think bigger picture, obviously we know That bigger corporations do make a killing and can be greedy, but I do not think that Kroger as a whole is all greedy, if anything take a look at Walmart they triple in profits and their merchandise is much less, the way that they treat their employees is almost inhumane and I used to work for Walmart I should know, before you point The finger at McMullen pointed it at yourselves, what are you as an employee or as a person as a whole to make more money or run the business more effectively, what are you doing as far as strategies that you can run across marketing or sales? You just want to get paid for the job that you’re working go above and beyond your job to actually help the company make even more money so that way it opens up other avenues and other doors for yourself and the company as a whole

You're a moron. This is just a bad and greedy company and it starts with the CEO. I use to work for them myself and this company has no morals, it's racist, greedy, unethical, unprofessional in every way and dishonest. The company is made up of selfish people and most of them are narcissist. I was a department manager of a cheese shop in Cincinnati a few years ago and my shop was one of the best in the district. The cheese shop was privately owned at first until Kroger bought them out. Anyway, from day one I could feel the racism when I was promoted in that position and they tried to throw everything at me to try to discourage me. At the time I was finishing a bachelors degree in IT at a university. Eventually we inherited a new store manager and this man had no respect for people period, especially if you are a black male. On several occasions I was singled out for no reason during his huddles in front of a predominately white management staff. I eventually complained to the company's union. They told me to contact the company's alert line. When I did, the store, the district and regional HR office started to retalliate. They sabotaged my department, tried to degrade me, disrespect, bully, humiliate you name it and your mighty CEO as well as the union knew what was going on and did nothing. I even had to get an attorney involved who made the union set up a grievance. I left shortly after that and got a real job with my degree. I never stepped foot in another Kroger to do any shopping. I am not giving my money to a company that treats people like that and if the rest of you people have any sense, you would do the same.

Kroger isn't a Brinks truck flipped over on the freeway. Those ragged stores are borderline closures anyway and throwing #pandemic pay on top of the immense amount of benefits the employees get was the stick that broke the camel's back. Rodney has been employed by Kroger since the mid 70's and he's worked in numerous positions and worked harder than anyone else to be where he is in the company today. He has a degree from the University of Kentucky while most of you gold diggers didn't even finish high school. Learn some humility. And some humanity, for that matter, given that my position was arguing from a stance of moral obligation, of which you seem to have either missed or deemed irrelevant. What does it matter if a job is "unskilled"? It's labor. Essential labor. Full time labor should be enough to support a person, at a bare fucking minimum, regardless of skillset. Skilled workers can and should have a greater range of economic growth, sure, but the two aren't mutually exclusive. If a company can't flourish without starving their employees, then - and I'm sorry if this is a hot take - maybe that company shouldn't be flourishing? Again, there's no reason for a CEO to be taking home tens of millions annually while their employees rely on SNAP benefits to afford groceries. It's morally bankrupt, first and foremost.
