She was only 9 years old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, an American singer/songwriter. He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. As a retired music educator and performing musician, I would strongly discourage young singers from trying to emulate the growls and screams Angelina does here. They could seriously damage their voices and potentially never be able to sing again. I imagine a vocal coach told her to cut back on those because she never sang this like that again in subsequent performances, although they were fantastic too. Angelina's breath support is astounding, allowing her to easily cover her impressive vocal range. Look at her cover of Adele's "All I Ask" and watch how she uses her diaphragm and head positions, especially in her high register. Amazing. And she's sitting down too! I had maybe 2-3 prodigies during my years as a teacher, but no one even near what Angelina does. She is truly a once in a lifetime artist!

Angelina was obviously special right out of the gate at 7. Her confidence and her skill have been invincible since then. She's one of a kind (and her growth and development are practically all on video). 😎

Nine years and two months old when this was recorded. Watching her progress from six to eight is beyond incredible. She toured the world beginning at eight and by ten she is professional in every way. She is superior to all past or present as a vocalist. An interesting fact about Angelina is that she selects and arranges all of the music she does by herself. The notes that she is seen writing in the beginning of the video were changes to the arrangement that she requested the director to do with the band. The reason he smiled when he read it was that she worded it as her "wishes" for changes to the arrangement. Another amazing fact about this particular cover is that the original that she was covering was the very first performer, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who performed this song in an exaggerated, theatrical way, which was completely over the top. Angelina took that performance and changed it to make it more melodious and composed and really came up with a masterpiece of a performance. Missy, nice to listen to you. I listened to the whole 17:12 and you brought up quite a few points I've never heard before. Angelina? Isn't she remarkable? What really cracks me up is many other Vocal Coaches like yourself have an absolute field day with her. What's amazing is it's as if you are discussing and pointing out vocal techniques for an accomplished artist, at least in her 30's. When she rearranges a classic song (which she's been doing since she's 9 years old!) the song becomes hers and, incredibly many people enjoy her version rather than the original. Stay with her. She will change voices, change genre's, play the piano, sing with orchestra's, live bands, record video's with just a guitar or piano as accompaniment. And, of course, perform all these songs barefoot because of her desire to never forget there are children in this world who don't own a pair of shoes. I'm sure, down the road when she is the greatest, most recognizable artist in the world she will initiate some kind of action to deal with that global problem. You are just getting to know this extraordinary young lady. She is a child prodigy .. a music savant. She started singing at two .. totally in love with and drawn to jazz. Her grandmother, Mery Zamani, was also a child prodigy ..(her focus is art .. the fabric of the outfit Angelina wore on AGT was made from one of her grandmother"s paintings.) Her grandmother has always been a jazz lover and Angelina responded to it before she had turned two. Her grandmother taught her how to work KZfaq so Angelina could pull up all her favorites .. Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald .. all the jazz greats .. and Angelina would play a song over and over and over .. little bits at a time .. and played around with her voice because she really wanted to make those sounds herself .. from super young she had dedication and focus that was amazing .. in my opinion she was teaching herself from the inside out. She could do hours at a time of listening and copying what she heard .. She has been called by many 'the girl with a thousand voices' because she can sound like Billie, like Ella, like Sinatra .. etc.. I highly recommend that you listen to the video of the four songs she sang on Norway's Got Talent, when she was seven (turned 8 during the duration of the show.) She won the show and became a world-wide internet sensation .. especially with her version of Gloomy Sunday (Billie Holiday). Welcome ton the world of Angelina Jordan, The Barefoot Princess , The Queen of Jazz , the Angel with 1,000 voices. No matter what age you see her perform at she never disappoints! She auditioned for Norway's got talent at age 7 and won the competition at age 8 with over 46% of the total vote, This performance was done at the age of 9 years and 2 months. She picks all her songs and does her own arrangements of them. She is definitely a once in a lifetime talent. She has done over 140 covers , making each one her own and often better than the original. She also has at least 5 original songs of which I suggest you listen to Million Miles and 7th Heaven.as for her covers I suggest you listen to a couple of her most recent - Billie Jean originally done by Michael Jackson and Yesterday ,originally done by the Beatles . This is all Angelina. Her selection, her arrangement & interpretation (a tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins), her "wishes" for the band, and the many natural vocal techniques she employs including mature timing, phrasing, spacing, and control of her sound (rasp, vocal fry, extra air, aspirants, glottal stops, vowel modification, etc.). I believe this is the strongest evidence that Angelina is a vocal prodigy. She is inspired by Screaming Jay Hawkins, his arrangement and frasing and you can see that in the start of the video she is holding a cup wirh a picture on it - his picture !

Albert Tenfoot is right. Angelina is doing her version of a specific Screamin' Jay Hawkins TV performance. She took out his sort of voodoo howling and filtered in a Billy Holiday jazzy style. That coming from a 9 yr old girl is extremely impressive, uber talented and undeniably badass. And that big finish is jaw-dropping.

Hi Missy, I enjoyed your analysis to Haley Reinhart in the past and how you compare young Angelina to Haley. IMO, the 2 best singers on the planet and both so under rated. This performance is almost shocking at 9 but to me and even more amazing is her 10 year old performance of "FEELING GOOD, Live on the Stream Gir Tilbake" version. If you close your eyes you hear someone in their 20' or 30's. I'm not sure if Angelina today could do it any better. Thank you so much for the effort to explain how she is doing this. There are only a small few vocal coaches that have taken the time to really delve into this performance and that is appreciated.
