This is our second K-Classic. We had our first one for many years, so when we had to replace it, we wanted nothing else but this exact kzfaq.infoUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf model. We use it for about three people everyday in the morning. The taste and quick brew is one of the reasons we like it so much. There are so many choices of brands of coffee that we would grab what was on sale and test the different brands from there. I would definitely recommend trying different brands of coffee to find the ones you like the most because there are brands that quite frankly taste horrible.

FWIW, things sold at the MoMA store are not necessarily in the permanent design collection, and neither of these coffee makers is. The store has to fill its shelves, and most of the objects in the permanent collection are no longer manufactured. Also, the permanent collection has much higher standards than the store. There are four coffee makers included in MoMA's permanent design collection. The two still being manufacture are the Chemex brewer and Alessi's model 9090 espresso pot, designed in 1978 by Richard Sapper.

It's so hard to translate between cultures, but as a Dane I can only describe Eva Solo as "basic bitch but for women ages 50" (I don't like the term "basic bitch" in particular, but I haven't got anything else). It's so weird to me that MoMA sells it. Visually the things they make are fine but nothing groundbreaking and they're 100% form over function. The have a line of pans that have handles shaped like those hairpin tables legs (the Eva Trio Dura Line for anyone wanting to look it up) and I hate them with a passion.

Hello there! The additional filter thing of the Gemini is actually a reducer you put in the bottom of the main basket. Allows you to brew one even smaller cup. Moka pots are classic. The shape is iconic, they are used all over the world by all kinds of people. And they make rich delicious coffee. My first experience was when on vacation about 10 years ago and the house had one. Didn’t know how to use it but my daughter said “this is what we used in Cuba!” (She was there for about 6 weeks living with a family). Then our Brazilian friend said this was what she used in her home and her family uses in Brazil.

An Italian that always used a moka pot here: first of all, great content! :-) that been said, possibly the main reason why an the gemini has no handle it's beause in Italy the vast majority of houses has gas stovetop, and when you are using a moka on a gas stove you simply stop the brewing process by turning it off as you have no hot surface that can keep giving out heat to the moka... so using something like the gemini, you could turn off the gas, wait a couple second that the brewing ends completely and you coud take your cups with you to drink, getting back to the moka pot when it's completely cold and secure to handle :-)
@auntlynnie
@auntlynnie 2 жыл бұрын
For the moka pot, I would pick up the cups, then use my mitt to move the pot off of the burner, using the red part as a handle. (But yes, a handle on the back of the pot would be a better design.)
@jsdouglas2612
@jsdouglas2612 2 жыл бұрын
Ahh, see, the coffee is still brewing into the cups though. You remove a moka pot from heat before the brew is done. It’s easier on a stove where you can turn off the heat without it retaining some.

For the issue that was mentioned at 14:46 (the coffee chamber not standing up), I put the chamber on the upper part of the moka pot, so that it rests on the outer wall of the container and the coffee outlet at the center. This trick does not apply to the style of moka pot that is shown in the video but is useful for the standard ones. Maybe this helps somebody that uses a moka pot.

Hi, 14:59 don’t think the extra filter for the Gemini Express is for use on top of the ground coffee like tamp. (maybe that’s why it took quite a while for it to start brewing?). It can be used should you want your coffee less strong (not me 🤷🏻‍♀️😅) The rim you see In the filter compartment will fit/hold that extra filter perfectly reducing the amount of coffee with almost half than when using the whole compartment. Love my gemini expres i bought in Italy 15+ years ago, but also like our larger bialetti in case we have 1 or 2 visitors. And old school slow filter manual pouring for larger parties 🙂☕️

That moka pot... Does look nice, I won't argue. But considering we have two moka pots of this general design in my kitchen and both have a small plastic handle (I can't find a good example still in store, but Bialetti had a good example of this at a time) so you can at least handle the pot around the stove to get it on a cooling spot when your cups are brewed. This pure metal, no handle design is sleek, but screams second degree burn hazard.

I picked up an item very much like the Gemini Express at a thrift shop in Pittsburg last year, made by GSI Outdoor. It's very similar to the standard Moka pot (including being able to use the standard basket, screen, and gasket. While the Express has that clever two-spout head, the one I picked up has a single copper tube which goes up a few inches and turns back down. It does, have a rubber protector in the tube, so it's possible to move it when hot. I suspect it was marketed as a campfire coffee maker.

As a Moka Pot user, trying to stop the extraction on the Gemini without getting coffee everywhere would be rather difficult and a deal breaker for me. The only solution I could think would be to have a small bowl of water that you could dunk the bottom half of the Gemini into. I love the concept and getting the first tsp of brew from the spout would make Cuban Coffee a lot easier to brew.

18:54 all aluminum construction makes "adding a handle" after the fact a bit harder. The second brewer would be good to having a serving tool on hand. When it gets hot enough use serving tool to scoot over off burner. The problem is for people who do not have glass tops. With a gas stove you could just turn it off but an electric burner with risen ring plates would be a disaster. My idea for how to add a handle: a separate piece shaped shaped sort of like a tuning fork. A straight part which you hold, and a "U" shape that you position under the "wings". The two arms could have a little protrusion at the ends to create a positive grip (preventing it from sliding).

There’s a certain point where price does not indicate “better quality” and this perfectly describes the $100 pour over that does not improve brewing experience or quality. A glass pitcher that’s heat tempered and preferred pour over apparatus can achieve the the same result for much cheaper. Though I wouldn’t be bothered too much if the Gemini moka pot was $100.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that the "not a tamp" part of the moka pot is for doing half portions (at least that's how it works for mine)

The Solo is visibly closest to a Chemex I think. Design of the filter is reminiscent of the folded paper cone as well, and the capacity is on par. If you're a fan of that style of brew, it's a nice little visual/stylistic changeup I think. (Which you kind of touched on; different pouring experience for instance.)

The Gemini express is a version of the classic Italian cafe maker. There is a version like that for a cup or two, so I don’t get that brand , which isn’t the original brand. In Spain we use that traditional coffee maker and it’s great

Really enjoying your channel. Just wondering if you've ever tried a Vietnamese egg coffee. It's to die for (just a figure of speech not to be taken literally), they use moka pots alot.

If MoMA wanted to make a cool item, they should make a beautiful/functional moka filter holder so that it’s easier to fill.

To fill your moka pot funnel flip your Aeropress funnel wide side down and fill it up.

Isn't the moka pot shortcutting the whole issue of burning the coffee since the coffee is removed from the moka pot as soon as it brews? Traditionally the coffee gathers in the upper chamber of the moka pot and continues heating up. I always thought that was what caused it to burn or "overcook".

You’d need a jumper for the glass to keep it from burning you. Rather dangerous to not have double walled glass.

I want that square kettle in the MoMA collection too, but this pour over looks more like its meant to be a cold-brewer, hence the cork top so you can refrigerate any leftover.

I think that the pour over could be better used for cold brew or iced coffee. I was a little worried that the glass would break under the heat.

I don't think it's much different than a Chemex, which is also a glass pour over carafe. This just has a different shape

I suspect someone returned that specific product after using it. And Eva Solo products are normally packaged like that. I don't think there's any packaging missing. My wine glasses also came like that

That Mika pot reminds me of something from REI in the 90s or 2000s. They called them “camping espresso makers.” Even though it wasn’t technically espresso.

The Gemini is really flawed in that the best way to stop a moka pot from brewing is to run the base under tap water, but if you try that with the Gemini you’ll almost certainly drop both cups. The whole moka arrangement really needs to be poured after brewing in my opinion.

Everything about way the Eva came sounds like a returned product. At that price point I would be annoyed. Anything returned should be properly checked before being resold again.

I just love watching people talk anything about coffee but she makes it so much more entertaining for me than already it is :) p.s. Am I seeing things or her saucer was actually chipped? Btw I love glassware in general but the carafe has such a poor design both in form(which is of course is a subjective matter) and functionality that I am perplexed about the price tag.

You should check out the Bialetti Mini Express. It's similar to the Gemini, but has a plastic handle on the spout. Comes with a pair of adorable shot cups. I don't use it anymore but it will be a part of my collection forever
