A new year brings new possibilities... like a fresh Sacred+ episode of Moriarty x Jaffe! Today, I (Colin) welcome storied (not legendary) game designer David Jaffe back to + for a multifaceted conversation both serious and completely nonsensical. We touch on some poignant topics: The general state of our industry here in 2024, the controversy over AI art, rumors of some Xbox games coming to PlayStation, the cancellation of The Last of Us Online, alarms about slowing subscription models and the wariness of big publishers and developers to participate, and so much more. Also: Unprompted phallic discussions of a somewhat grotesque variety. We hope you enjoy the sheer chaos, and know most of you wouldn't have it any other way.

I guess Colin's Last Stand will be against AI :D It kinda perfectly ties in. We need a game on this. I actually agree with a lot of Colin's points. He's not wrong. But I think it's like the NFT debate. The tech that is visually available en masse is not an accurate representation of what the underlying capability of the tech is.

Being a visual artist myself, Jaffe's position on A.I art makes a ton of sense. It's still depressing and apathetic as fuck though. I'd rather have a reason to get out of bed than just sit in a tube with feel good drugs. Thats the ultimate distopia. Id rather go through the whole creative process myself, the good, the bad, and everything in between. Homeostasis is what drives humanity, not artificial intelligence

The happiness, sadness, frustration, anger, and everything in between that you feel throughout ANYTHING is what it means to be alive. It's a strange, almost anti-human stance for Jaffe to have. I love the guy, but I can't agree with him about that issue.

I kinda think it's sad that, unless it's your job, you don't derive any pleasure out of making art. The ideal future for me is all our needs are taken care of by AI, and we can just pursue hobbies and passion projects. I love woodworking. IKEA and China ruined my industry. Now I'm forced to make things to make money instead of any real fun joinery. If I didn't have to work about a paycheck, I'd love to just hand make furniture for the sheer pleasure of it. Or write. Or learn an instrument. Lots of things.

Jaffe's argument that 'everything we do is driven by the desire to feel good' was destroyed by Dostoevsky in 1864 with 'Notes from Underground'. What does it even mean to do something in order to feel good? Feel good in the short term or feel good in the long term? The way one acts will differ significantly depending on the answer to this question.

As a psychologist, I think the part that Jaffe is missing that Colin understands is the importance of meaning making on human functioning. Whether or not we’re 0s and 1s or just chemicals, the fact that we make meaning from our experiences is what actually brings us joy. If you meet someone’s basic needs and beyond but lock them in a room with no way for them to make meaning of their existence, they will likely become depressed no matter how much they have to “feel good.” Jaffe is using a logical argument while Colin is using a feeling argument, and in the end, the feeling component is the nature of humanity.

Not an overreaction at all! When plays are missed because of commercials, camera pans to people NOT playing the game or the NFL's constant obsession with stats/storylines, that's not cool for people wanting to watch the ACTUAL GAME! As a fan of the first Faction, shooters and online games I'm actually heartbroken about TLOU Online being cancelled. ND could've absolutely delegate the project to another studio or Sony could've spinned a support studio out of ND if the game required long-term live support. To me this speaks of ND not wanting to compromise by letting another studio touch on their IP, heck TLOU Remake was initially developed by Sony's Visual Arts Service Group until ND took over. Same thing with the PC port, Sony litteraly bought a studio to focus on their PC ports but ND are too controlling to let a 3rd party mingle with their IP. I just think ND didn't want to see the project come to life, and it took a lot of reports for them to say something... very very dissapointing.

Being a Concept Designer myself I can say that "AI art" is a tool, its not something that people should rely upon and then credit themselves for it. Its like using an APP to synthesise music using notes of a violin vs an actual violinist. A regular person may not know the difference unless they hear both live but a trained ear would tell the two apart straight away. We use things like Photo-Bashing and Kit-bashing but still need to train ourselves in fundamentals of design in order to understand how to correctly create something. A person without such knowledge or who doesn't know basic anatomy, lighting or blending tools etc. would just make an unprofessional mess and would be useless to the industry.

One of the things I love about art, music, movies, etc, is getting to learn the creative process and techniques used to create the product. Imagine going to a convention and asking a guy at the booth, "How'd you make this?" and the response was "oh i had AI do it." It's no longer awe inspiring. I definitely get using AI to help proof read a paper and provide feedback if you've written it yourself. But having it do the entire creative process for you isn't exciting to me. Also, reducing everything we do down to beeps and boops isn't the slope I'd like to go down.

I could not disagree more about Jaffe’s take on free will not existing. Creativity isn’t the arbiter of evidence of free will. So many other notions of human free will disprove the opinion that free will doesn’t exist. I respect the take and its attempt of computing it with chemical balances, but there’s so much more to it than that.

@@gavinhillicklove cannot fathom to exist without the notion of free will. It’s upon yourself to choose how and why you would devote yourself to another being. Think of it this way; if your life partner was chosen for you, would you really be able to say you unconditionally love them and feel like it’s genuine? Sure there are chemical balances in the brain that process the emotion, but the truth is there are many times your partner will break your heart or be really difficult. Your love and free will to stick by them in the end was by your own doing.

I'm actually working in the AI space in game development and I think there's a huge gap in understanding how some of these models work. Most people are only aware of generative ai and chat gpt. There are various methods of machine learning like convolutional neural networks and generative adversarial networks that aren't just "text regurgitation" like large language models. Also, to add to Jaffe's point, I would posit that our brains are actually really complex neural networks and most machine learnings models are based on this core concept. If you understand how brain neurons and dendrites etc work and communicate, it actually is very mechanical - almost like 1s and 0s.

Colin is discounting that the AI is actually making something novel, just as a human who looked at all the information it did would create repsonses based on that. It's not just 1's and 0's, that's the most reductive thing ever. You're ignoring that the programmer produces the process and the type of outcome they want.

To me, the AI conversation was depressing. Jaffe's argument makes sense from a purely utilitarian view, but the issue with art is that utilitarianism isn't quite as relevant to expressing your artwork. It's a reflection of your passions and interests and talents. Offloading that to a computer sucks.

Jaffe, a tip for getting more nutrition throughout the day when not being hungry is find some nutritious snacks that are easy to grab. Maybe hard boil a number of eggs (natures multivitamin) to eat throughout the week, small amount of almonds (nutritious but high calorie), protein shake/bars, bone broth to sip on, etc. Fortunately with low appetite you have less cravings food that’s on the unhealthier side. I try to view food as stat increases. I’m not a nutritionist or Dr, but having these readily available helps me keep a healthy diet and avoid so hungry where I succumb to easy/unhealthy options. I’ve told Jaffe this a hundred times but it’s worth mentioning… one of the frustrating things about Jaffe’s perspective (on everything) is that he has NO REGARD FOR POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES. Whether that’s an AI apocalypse, or the quality of the game industry degrading substantially (cuz of sub services; for example), stuff like that. Things that most of us think about and say “no! We don’t want that to happen!” so we resist it, Jaffe says “oh well if it happens it happens.” I think that’s what leads to soooo many of his opinions that frustrate people or confuse them.

The other thing that people need to realise is that while using AI Art, its ok for maybe in-house quick turnarounds where we many times do a quick photoshop of some photos of the internet to convey an idea to the team, but these are all mostly towards original drawings. These quick photo bashes are Never seen on any outward facing art that you see in most "Art of.." books. Hence the same should be the case of how AI art is treated, its not something that should be allowed in the open space with people making tones of cash off of someone else's artwork while having absolutely no art themselves.

Based on your Helldivers - Foamstars analogy. It makes no senso to launch Rise of the Ronin on the same day as Dragons Dogma 2. It is set up to fail while the target audience is probably the same.

In your example, it's two different companies. Sony seems to have influence on when 2nd party games release, so that's why Colin questioned the release strategy. Tho, honestly, Foamstars doesn't look as interesting or fun as Helldivers. Not much competition.

There is a difference in an Artist training themselves based on learning from the Masters and then creating their own work and slowly developing their own visual identity and an AI basically photobashing a couple of images together (mostly pretty badly)

I appreciate the conversation, but I feel sometimes Jaffe likes having the current polarizing opinion for the sake of it. I have also noticed a lot of these people tend to have this opinion because they are untalented and lazy in all aspects of life. It reminds me of hackers in a competitive multiplayer games. They lack of the motivation or respect to the development of the skills required. Note: using AI as a tool is fine; but it shouldn’t be a replacement/theft of intellectual property and style.

I don't think he's ever claimed that you can change your sex, but that you can change your gender. Gender and biological sex are two different things. Also, almost all scientists and scientific organizations agree with Jaffe that you can change your gender.

I love how Jaffe try to bullshit his way to laziness and greed through his AI justification. And no, that AI couldn't exist without the real artists. He says he cares about humans but what about people's creative drive and mental health? Just put everyone in tubes and feed them drugs David. The creative process was already democratic. It's just people who won't put in the work.

The universe can be deterministic and free will still be true. Jaffe is arguing from a reductionist bias, though. Creativity and beauty are higher levels of abstraction, but they are real. The fact that everything is made of up atoms set in motion from the beginning of the universe is true but it's not a good explanation of what anything is. Free will is a better explanation for what we do than "chemicals in the brain" made us do it. While true that a statue of Winston Churchill is just a bunch of atoms, you need to understand higher level abstractions like nations, leadership, tradition, war, enlightenment, western values etc to have a good explanation. If this talk between two video games personalities scratching at the surface of the conversation is interesting to you, I recommend the book Beginning of Infinity by the physicist David Deutsch.

I liked Jaffe’s use of the term democratization of creativity. In the 70s through the 90s we still had very small groups of people generating games. That disappeared as technology required bigger and more elaborate teams. AI will allow small teams with a creative vision to make games again. With publishers becoming more risk averse I think that will ultimately be a good thing.

Gosh, the AI talk with Jaffe is infuriating. He is so good at spinning a logical response instantaneously, that he just goes “yeah, but IS the dog really unaware like you think?” Yeah, Jaffe. We do. Because dogs aren’t in positions of politics and teaching colleges, and built the infrastructure of society. What we DO give dogs proper credit for is their instinct to be service dogs in unique situations for human beings. I hate his pretentiousness. It’s annoying BECAUSE it’s a rant on “what if” with no reality. Colin is making sense, for example, about his dog not knowing much like humans do. But in Jaffe’s understanding, “but does it?” Anyways… this is my opinion on Jaffe’s opinion. Take it or leave it. 🙂

Colin and Jaffe's disagreement on living a perfect life in a test tube or enduring life for the human experience reminds me a lot of Joker and his final antognist's disagreement in Persona 5 Royal.
